The insert is formed by two semi circular ring sections with engaging surfaces Ä65Ü

Description

The invention relates to an end housing for a connector with an outer housing and a ring gear. Such end housings are e.g. from the company FILCON Elektronik Vertriebsgesellschaft für Bauelemente und Geräte mbH in Taufkirchen, Germany, under the name Paratron®.

It consists of a metallic outer housing 11 with a cable entry end wall 13 in which a passage opening 15 is formed. In the passage opening 15 there is a sleeve 17, which has an outer part 19 protruding from the outer housing 11 with an external thread 21 and a radial flange 23 abutting the inside of the end wall 13. A threaded nut 25 is screwed onto the external thread 21, by means of which the side wall 13 and the flange 23 are fastened to one another. An outer insulating jacket 27 of an electrical cable 29 connects to the end of the sleeve 17 protruding from the outer housing 11.

The Paratron® end housing is intended for use in a connector in which the cable 29 is shielded. In order to connect such cables to the plug, a piece of the outer insulating jacket 27 of the cable 29 is stripped. The sleeve 17 of the end housing 11 is pushed onto the screen thus exposed. The sleeve 17 has a feed-through opening which is adapted to the outer diameter of the screen in such a way that the sleeve can just be pushed onto the screens of the cable 29. The sleeve 17 has a sleeve extension 35. After the sleeve 17 has been completely pushed on, the exposed shield of the cable 29 can be folded around the sleeve extension 35.

The structure of this type of connector is fully described in German patent DE-C-40 13 963.

The Paratron® end housing further has a ring gear 33 located inside the outer housing 11. The ring gear 33 is designed such that it is adapted to a ring gear 37 of a suitable connector 40. The teeth of the respective sprockets 33, 37 fit into each other after screwing the connector 40 into the end housing 11 by means of a union nut, so that the connector 40 cannot be rotated relative to the outer housing 11 after screwing in.

Connectors of the type described above have the disadvantage that the diameter of the cable 29 to be connected and the diameter of the sleeve 17 are limited by the diameter of the ring gear 33. This disadvantage is shown in FIGS. 2A and 2B. 2A is a simplified top view of the end housing 11 and FIG. 2B is a simplified longitudinal view of the end housing 11. In both figures, the opening in the ring gear 33 has a diameter D1 that is smaller than the diameter D2 of the thread 54 for the connector 40. For example, in the Paratron® housings, the ring gear 33 can have an inner diameter D1 of 9 mm, whereas the thread 54 has a diameter D2 of 13 mm. This disadvantage can be overcome by using an adapter ring to adapt a connector 40 to a larger end housing. Such adapter rings are also available in the Paratron® series. However, the total weight of the connector (end housing 11 and adapter ring) becomes larger, which is disadvantageous in weight-critical applications.

This problem is solved according to the invention in that the toothed ring 33 can be detached from the outer housing 11. This arrangement makes it possible to first insert the cable 29 through the passage opening 15. Then the sleeve 17 is attached to the end of the cable 29 and drawn into the outer housing 11. Then the ring gear 33 is introduced into the opening of the outer housing 11 opposite the end wall. According to this solution according to the invention, the sleeve 17 is larger in diameter than the diameter D1 of the opening in the ring gear 33 and it cannot pass through this opening.

Since this housing according to the invention can accommodate cables with a larger diameter, an adapter ring and is in many cases thus saving additional weight. The manufacture of such end housings is also simplified in that the ring gear no longer has to be manufactured together with the outer housing in the same metal piece. The ring gear can therefore be produced in a separate process, which is advantageous due to the more complicated construction of the ring gear.

In one embodiment, the ring gear consists of at least two parts that can be brought together. This has the advantage that the assembly of the ring gear in the end housing is simplified. To insert the ring gear within the outer housing, the ring gear preferably has a thread which is adapted to an internal thread of the outer housing. This thread allows the ring gear to be screwed into the end housing.

In a further embodiment, the surface of the ring gear has troughs. The outer housing has corresponding recesses with ball and spring, the balls being designed such that they fit into the troughs of the ring gear. With the help of this arrangement, the ring gear is secured in the outer housing.

In order to further save weight, the outer housing can be made of plastic with a metallic layer. The outer housing can also be made from an electrically conductive plastic.

The end housing according to the invention is used with a plug connector for connecting a cable or bundle of cables with a sleeve. This connector can also be made of plastic with a metal layer.

The connector is used in a cable connection system with a socket adapted to the connector.

Fig. 3 zeigt ein Endgehäuse nach der Erfindung. Fig. 3 shows an end housing according to the invention. The end housing has an outer housing 11 with an end wall 13 on the cable entry side, in which an opening 15 is formed. Inside the outer housing 11 there is a sleeve 17 which has an outer part 19 which projects in the final state and has an external thread 21, a radial flange 23 which bears against the inside of the end wall 13 and a sleeve extension 35 for receiving the exposed shield of a cable (not shown).

The outer housing 11 has an internal thread 45 at its other opening 43 opposite the passage opening 15. The internal thread 45 serves to receive the connector 40 and to screw in a ring gear 50. The ring gear 50 is shown outside the outer housing 11. It is cylindrical and has toothing 57 and an external thread 55 adapted to the internal thread 45 of the external housing 11. Due to the internal thread 45 and the external gear ring 55, the internal gear 50 can be screwed into the external housing 11 through the opening 43. The teeth 57 of the ring gear 50 are adapted to the teeth 37 of the connector 40.

The outer housing 11 has an undercut 58 which delimits the thread 45 and forms a stop for the ring gear 50.

Other devices can also be used to secure the ring gear 50 in the outer housing 11. The surface of the ring gear 50 can e.g. be made smooth. In this case, the ring gear 50 can be pushed into the outer housing 11 and fastened in the outer housing 11 by means of an adhesive, a clamping or hook device or a clamping ring. The adhesive used should be conductive, including conductive screw locking lacquer can be used.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the ring gear 50 is formed from two or more parts, as shown in FIGS. 4A and 4B. These figures show how the ring gear 50 can be separated into two parts by a cut 65 (preferably zig-zag). This arrangement has the advantage that the ring gear 50 can be arranged more easily around a cable 29 protruding from the opening 43.

After screwing the ring gear 50 into the end housing 11, the two (or more) parts of the ring gear 50 are held together without additional means. Alternatively, a clamp or hook device, adhesive, or conductive threadlocker varnish can be used to hold the parts of the ring gear 50 together. The adhesive is preferably conductive.

Another embodiment of the invention is shown in FIG. 5. The outer housing 11 has additional bores 77 in an extension 47. In these bores 77 there are balls 75 at the open end of the bores 77 located on the inner part of the outer housing. Inside the bore 77 between the end wall of the bore 77 and the ball is a spring 80 arranged.

Anwendung in Umgebungen, wo Vibration problematisch ist, z.B. in Hubschraubern,According to this embodiment, the ring gear 50 contains 49 troughs 85 in its outer region, as shown in FIG. 6. The troughs 85 are designed such that the ball 75 fits into them. After inserting the ring gear 50 into the outer housing 11, the balls 75 are pressed into the troughs 85 by the action of the springs 80, the ten-ring gear 50 being held in place in the outer housing 11. This construction has the advantage that the ring gear 50 is secured in the outer housing 11 becomes. This construction is used in particular in environments where vibration is problematic, for example in helicopters,

The end housing according to the invention is used with a plug connector 40 to which a cable 29 is connected, as shown in FIG. 1. This connector is used in a cable connection system which connects a cable 29 to a device (not shown in the figures) or to a further cable by means of a plug socket.

In a further embodiment of the invention, the end housing is made of plastic and not of metal. The outer housing 11 is coated with a thin metal layer, so that an electrical connection between the shield of the cable 29 and the connector 40 is ensured. This material has the advantage that the weight of the end housing 11 is further reduced. Alternatively, the end housing 11 and connector 40 could be formed from an electrically conductive plastic.

Instead of a single cable 29, a bundle of cables can also be connected to the connector.
