Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method and a device for curtain coating a moving support with a liquid coating material according to the preamble of claim 1.
- This coating in particular with a large width of the machine and high speed, there are a large number of problems relating to the curtain stabilize and bring it onto the surface as evenly as possible.
- One of these problems is that when the curtain falls freely, it has to be stabilized on the side, otherwise the curtain contracts under the effect of the surface tension towards the center.
- One of these means is to provide side guides, but the friction of the liquid film on the side guide creates an unfavorable speed profile at the edge of the curtain because the speed of the curtain is zero on the side guide.
- a method for curtain coating in which the rinsing liquid is drawn off from the edges of the falling curtain, the edge guides near the point where the falling curtain hits the support with a Vacuum source are connected.
- the edge guides consist of hollow tubes, each of which has a slot facing the curtain, the rinsing liquid being introduced into the interior of the tubes and passing through the slots into the edge regions of the curtain.
- the curtain even if it is forced into the vertical case by rod-shaped side guides, can be deformed immediately next to it, for example by existing surface tension differences, in such a way that it can fall onto rear wall parts, which leads to serious contamination and malfunctions can.
- EP-A-606 038 also discloses a device for removing the curtain edges with plates working as knives, the plates being arranged parallel to the curtain and the curtain edge being suctioned off there.
- the height of these knives is very small and there is a risk that part of the coating solution gets under the entire device, which leads to contamination.
- the problem of the thickened edge is not solved there.
- a second object of the present invention is to provide a method and a device with which a uniform coating with clean edges can be achieved without substantial loss of material.
- This second object is achieved with the method according to independent patent claims 3 and 9. Further advantages are defined in independent claim 4 and in the dependent claims.
- FIG. 1 part of a coating device is shown schematically as part of a system.
- the pouring plates 1 can be seen, see also FIG. 4, with the side limiting plates 2 attached to the side, with which the pouring solution 3 is limited for the respective pouring width.
- the free fall of the curtain begins on the lip 4 of the foundry front plate 5. From this point on, the curtain 6 must be stabilized by the side guides 7. Without these side guides, the curtain would contract towards the center under the effect of surface tension.
- the unfavorable speed profile in the side guides is influenced by the fact that a liquid film, for example made of water or a water / gelatin solution, is introduced on both sides of the curtain in order to reduce the edge effect.
- a liquid film for example made of water or a water / gelatin solution
- this liquid film has a certain width and is then separated and drained off from the casting solution curtain by means of a device. This is done here with an outward-facing plate over which water flows and which drains the rinsing liquid and part of the curtain liquid into an area to the side outside of the casting roll.
- the coating device also has a carrier 8 to be coated, which is guided around the casting roll 9 and under the coating device. The direction of rotation of the casting roll is also shown in FIG.
- the side-limiting liquid film is no longer introduced parallel to the casting solution or the casting curtain, but rather transversely thereto, that is, see in particular FIG. 3, the liquid film 10 is introduced parallel to the flow-limiting front wall 7 ′ of the side guide 7, the liquid film 10 flows in a groove 14 in the side guide and forms part of the front wall of the side guide.
- the liquid for example water or a water / gelatin solution, is introduced through a metering slot 11, the slot end 12 being shaped in such a way that the liquid film 10 flows down the groove in the side guide regularly and with a uniform thickness.
- a knife 15 is attached, the outer geometry of which is known per se.
- this knife also has a front edge 16 which forms an acute angle ⁇ of 0-30 °, for example 10 °, with respect to the inside of the side guide.
- a suction slot 18 is arranged in the side guide, the height of which is 0.05-0.5 mm, see FIG. 2.
- This slot 18 is connected via a suction channel 19 to a fan or other vacuum system in order to prevent the cut off the curtain edge and the liquid film 10.
- a few mm of the curtain are cut off with the knife 15. Sucking off the liquid film and the edge of the curtain significantly stabilize the curtain.
- the gelatin is thinned and thus the incrustation of the suction paths is prevented.
- a suction slot 20 is arranged on the lower edge of the knife, which is connected via a channel 21 to a vacuum system which is the same as for the suction slot 18 can be.
- This channel preferably also contains a water rinse. As shown in Figure 2, this creates an edge of the coating 22 that can be used without loss.
- the knife height on the cutting edge S of the knife can be 1-15 mm and it is advisable to use the suction slit from a knife height of 3 mm, whereas with a knife height of 1-3 mm there is no need for a suction slit.
- the delimiting edge 25 of the side delimitation plates is not vertical, but has a cutting edge 24, this cutting edge enclosing an angle of, for example, 60 °, that is to say that the two edges of the cutting edge unite with the perpendicular to the coating 22 Have angles ⁇ and ⁇ of 10 - 80 °, preferably 60 °.
- the distance H between the cutting edge 24 and the surface of the foundry plates is 0.3-2.5 mm, preferably 0.8 mm. This minimizes the effect of surface tension reduced, and lateral displacements of the casting solution are largely avoided.
- the device according to the invention can be varied with respect to the stated mass and can be adapted to the most varied of coating conditions and casting solution combinations. While every single measure already leads to extensive improvements in terms of the quality of the coating, a combination of all improvements results, such as vacuuming off the cut edges, vacuuming off the casting solution jammed with the knife and avoiding the layer thickness differences caused by the surface tension, and guiding a thin liquid film along the side boundary plates a particularly stable coating, the edges of which no longer cause material loss or drying problems.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method and a device for curtain coating a moving support with a liquid coating material according to the preamble of
One of these problems is that when the curtain falls freely, it has to be stabilized on the side, otherwise the curtain contracts under the effect of the surface tension towards the center. One of these means is to provide side guides, but the friction of the liquid film on the side guide creates an unfavorable speed profile at the edge of the curtain because the speed of the curtain is zero on the side guide.
From EP-B-414 721 a method for curtain coating is known, in which the rinsing liquid is drawn off from the edges of the falling curtain, the edge guides near the point where the falling curtain hits the support with a Vacuum source are connected. The edge guides consist of hollow tubes, each of which has a slot facing the curtain, the rinsing liquid being introduced into the interior of the tubes and passing through the slots into the edge regions of the curtain. This method does not result in a sharp edge, since the line of contact between the curtain and the side flow is not stable and the quality of the coating is thus impaired. At the in In the solution described in EP-A-606 038, the curtain, even if it is forced into the vertical case by rod-shaped side guides, can be deformed immediately next to it, for example by existing surface tension differences, in such a way that it can fall onto rear wall parts, which leads to serious contamination and malfunctions can.
Starting from this prior art, it is a first object of the invention to provide a method and a device in which the edges of the curtain fall as undisturbed as possible and important system parts and the coated support are not soiled and a uniform coating is achieved. This object is achieved with
In EP-B-281 520 the rinsing liquid film is led away together with the curtain edge cut off by a knife. The front edge of the knife is at an angle α inwards. However, this has the effect that the edge zone of the curtain is compressed and an edge bead is produced on the coating. This bead is an undesirable disturbance, which leads to material loss and drying problems.
Ausserdem wird dort das Problem des verdickten Randes nicht gelöst.EP-A-606 038 also discloses a device for removing the curtain edges with plates working as knives, the plates being arranged parallel to the curtain and the curtain edge being suctioned off there. The height of these knives is very small and there is a risk that part of the coating solution gets under the entire device, which leads to contamination. In addition, the problem of the thickened edge is not solved there.
In contrast, a second object of the present invention is to provide a method and a device with which a uniform coating with clean edges can be achieved without substantial loss of material. This second object is achieved with the method according to

- 2 shows in a longitudinal section the essential parts of the device according to the invention,

In Figure 1, part of a coating device is shown schematically as part of a system. The
As already mentioned at the beginning, the unfavorable speed profile in the side guides is influenced by the fact that a liquid film, for example made of water or a water / gelatin solution, is introduced on both sides of the curtain in order to reduce the edge effect. In known devices of this type, for example in accordance with WO 90/01179, this liquid film has a certain width and is then separated and drained off from the casting solution curtain by means of a device. This is done here with an outward-facing plate over which water flows and which drains the rinsing liquid and part of the curtain liquid into an area to the side outside of the casting roll. However, this severely limits the flexibility with regard to different beam widths.
The coating device also has a
In the device according to the invention, the side-limiting liquid film is no longer introduced parallel to the casting solution or the casting curtain, but rather transversely thereto, that is, see in particular FIG. 3, the
It is thereby achieved that the liquid film and thus also the line of
At the lower end of the side guides a
On the
In order to avoid the bulge formed by the compressed curtain edge on the edge of the suction knife, a
The knife height on the cutting edge S of the knife can be 1-15 mm and it is advisable to use the suction slit from a knife height of 3 mm, whereas with a knife height of 1-3 mm there is no need for a suction slit.
Further disturbances can arise from the side boundary plates arranged in front of the pouring lip, for example layer thickness errors in the edge area, in that the casting solution rises under the effect of the surface tension on the sides of the side boundary plates, since the previously known side boundary plates have a right-angled end face. In deviation from these previously known designs, the
It can be seen from FIG. 5 that the
It goes without saying that the device according to the invention can be varied with respect to the stated mass and can be adapted to the most varied of coating conditions and casting solution combinations.
