Eine Vorrichtung zur Durchführung dieses Verfahrens ist in Figur 1 bis 3 schematisch gezeigt. Die Vorrichtung besteht aus einem Auflagetisch (nicht gezeigt) für die Bahn mit Transportmitteln, beispielsweise Transportbändern. Ferner ist die Bahn 1 nahe der zur Transportrichtung parallelen Randkante 5 vorzugsweise in dem bei 6 angegebenen Bereich mittels weiterer, synchron zu den Bahntransportmitteln umlaufender Klemm- oder Fördermittel, beispielsweise in Form von umlaufenden Riemen gehalten (nicht gezeigt). Seitlich des Auflagetisches ist mindestens eine Kantenumlegevorrichtung 7 gehaltert, mittels derer die Saumbildung in dem die Klemm- und Fördermittel überragenden florlosen Randbereich 2 der Bahn 1 erfolgt. Im Anschluß an die Kantenumlegevorrichtung 7 ist eine Anpreßvorrichtung 8 zum Anpressen des gebildeten Saumes 9 an eine Gegenfläche sowie anschließend eine Nähvorrichtung 10 angeordnet. Beim Ausführungsbeispiel erfolgt zunächst durch eine Umlegevorrichtung 11 eine Aufrichtung der florlosen Zone 2 gemäß Figur 3 links, bevor dann die erste Stufe der Saumbildung im Bereich der Kantenumlegevorrichtung 7 erfolgt. Jede der im Ausführungsbeispiel dargestellten beiden Kantenumlegevorrichtungen 7 weist sowohl Umlegeelemente zum Formen des Saumes als auch Fördermittel 12 zum Transport der saumbildenden Randkante 2 auf, wobei die Fördermittel 12 gleichzeitig Umlegemittel sein können. Sie wirken mit Kufen und/oder umlaufenden Unlegerädern 13 zusammen. In der ersten Saumbildungsstufe wird der Saum gemäß Figur 3 zweite Position von links, in der zweiten Saumbildungsstufe die Saumbildung gemäß Figur 3 Mitte bewirkt. Die Fördermittel 12 sind unabhängig von den Förder- bzw. Transportmitteln der Bahn 1 angetrieben und bezüglich ihrer Geschwindigkeit regelbar. Insbesondere können die Fördermittel 12 mittels einer Steuerelektronik (nicht gezeigt) beeinflußt werden, in welche die die Geschwindigkeit entsprechend dem Überstand oder Rückstand der florlosen saumbildenden Randkante 2 (vergleiche Figur 7) gegenüber der Bahn 1 derart eingebbar ist, daß zu Beginn und am Ende des Säumvorganges eine Beschleunigung oder Verlangsamung der Geschwindigkeit des Fördermittels 12 erfolgt, so daß trotz einer Tuchausbildung gemäß Figur 7 eine Saumausbildung gemäß Figur 5 und 6 erreicht wird.
