    Claims (7)

    1. An apparatus for transporting and aligning sheets of paper, comprising at least one aligning straightedge (16), driven transporting cylinders (12) arranged transversely to the straightedge and freely rotatable transport rolls (18a, 18b) arranged adjacent to the straightedge (16) and being biased against the envelope of the transporting cylinders, characterized in that each of the transport rolls (18a, 18b) is deflectably supported on a lever (24) pivotally mounted at the straightedge (16) and bent at a right angle, and that the lever (24) is formed as a stirrup having a first limb (22) mounted rotatably about its axis on one side of the straightedge (16), a second limb (20) extending through an opening of the straightedge (16) to the other side of the straightedge (16) and having a transport roll (18a, 18b) rotatably mounted at the free end of the second limb, and a lever arm (26) connecting the limbs (20, 22).
    2. The apparatus according to claim 1, characterized in that the contact pressure by which the transport rolls (18a, 18b) are biased against the transporting cylinders (12) is adjustable.
    3. The apparatus according to claim 2, characterized in that the contact pressure of at least particular ones of the transport rolls (18a, 18b) is individually adjustable.
    4. The apparatus according to claim 2, characterized in that the contact pressure of at least a group of transport rolls (18a, 18b) is commonly adjustable.
    5. The apparatus according to claim 4, characterized in that the contact pressure of the group of transport rolls (18a, 18b) is adjusted by a tensioned wire (32) engaging the shafts of the transport rolls.
    6. The apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the first limb (22) is arranged at a right angle and the second limb (20) is arranged at an angle of more than 90° with respect to the straightedge (16).
    7. The apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that a straightedge (16a, 16b) with associated transport rolls (18a, 18b) is provided along each of the side walls of the transport path defined by the transporting cylinders (12).
