Im Bereich des Fernseh- und auch des Rundfunkempfangs ist es heute aufgrund der Kabel- bzw. Satellitentechnik üblich, daß eine große Anzahl verschiedener Sender empfangen werden. Üblicherweise erfolgt die Einstellung des jeweils gewünschten Fernseh- oder Rundfunkkanals über eine Fernbedienung, die zum Beispiel über Infrarotsignale die Umschaltvorgänge steuert. Auf diesem Handgerät für die Fernbedienung der Kanäle befinden sich jedoch im allgemeinen für die einzelnen Kanäle nur jeweils fortlaufende Ziffern.
