Description

  • The present invention relates to a resting bed susceptible of being supplied with accessories, of the type comprising: a perimetric frame consisting of at least one pair of longitudinal section members and at least one pair of head section members mutually interconnected, a plurality of supporting elements or bedposts designed to support the perimetric frame to a predetermined height from ground, at least one spring support framework operatively carried by said perimetric frame and extending according to a horizontal plane enclosed by said perimetric frame.
  • It is known that usual resting beds generally comprise a perimetric frame, formed for example with one pair of longitudinal section members and one pair of head section members mutually interconnected, provided with elements resting on ground and carrying a spring support framework. The spring support framework is generally arranged to support a mattress and may for example consist of springs or a plurality of laths or staves made of wood or plastic material, disposed parallelly in side by side relation close to each other and extending transversely to the longitudinal direction of the bed.
  • In many cases a bed needs to be provided with several different accessories, such as for example writing tables, supporting tops carrying objects of any kind, reading lamps, side rails, heads, and so on.
  • In the connection, beds provided for example with supporting tops rotatably hinged to the perimetric frame have been made, so that said tops can be moved from a non-use condition to a use condition.
  • Also beds provided with side rails have been made, said rails being of the collapsible type that is adapted to be moved from a non-use condition to a use condition, or of the fixed type, that is fastened to the perimetric bedframe with the aid of clamp means or the like.
  • There are also resting beds provided with heads, and/or supporting tops slidably engaged along the perimetric frame by suitable carriages the wheels of which are guided along rolling tracks conveniently formed in the section members associated with the bedframe.
  • In this solution the guideways are formed on the inner side surface of the section member and the same section member also comprises seatings located to a higher position than the guideways and designed to receive the ends of the staves supporting the user in a resting position. Said carriages must be also provided with braking means susceptible of being selectively activated and deactivated by the user to enable the locking of the accessory to the desired position and respectively the release of the same thereby allowing said carriages to slide along the frame.
  • In accordance with the present invention it is found that, in order to accomplish a bedframe having both a supporting function for a resting person and a further supporting function for slidable accessories, which at the same time offers sizes and concerned masses of the same values as a traditional frame devoid of accessories or even lower values and improved smoothness of the accessories in sliding, in the absence of noise, and enables the assembling and servicing of the different parts to be facilitated, it is possible to resort to a bedframe comprising section members the contour and shape of which and the different cavities provided therein enable several different accessory elements to be associated with the bedframe in such a manner that they can be applied to the outer contour of the section member acting as a guide surface and slide thereon.
  • In particular, the invention pertains to a resting bed susceptible of being supplied with accessories, characterized in that at least the longitudinal section members of said perimetric frame exhibit an outline that in cross sectional view comprises: at least one vertical wall forming the inner surface of the perimetric frame; at least one supporting wall extending downwardly from the upper end of the vertical wall and gradually departing therefrom towards the outside of the perimetric wall in order to define a supporting surface for at least one abutment portion belonging to an accessory to be associated with the perimetric bedframe; at least one grip lug disposed close to the upper end of the vertical wall and substantially projecting towards the inside of the perimetric frame in order to afford a guide rib to which at least one grip tailpiece associated with said accessory can be oscillatably engaged.
  • Said accessory may for example consist of a supporting top and/or a side rail.
  • Preferentially the supporting wall exhibits a substantially semicircular outline in section and is connected to the upper and lower ends of the vertical wall by substantially horizontal upper and lower connecting portions, respectively.
  • Still more preferentially, advantageously combined with the supporting wall is at least one undercut defined by the semicircular outline exhibited by the supporting wall itself, a coupling tailpiece formed in the extension of the abutment portion carried by said accessory element, a lamp for example, being detachably snap-fitted into said undercut.
  • Still in accordance with the invention, each of said section members also exhibits at least one upper surface and one lower surface against which a first and a second locator pegs respectively abut. Said pegs project perpendicularly from a supporting bracket carrying another accessory, a head for example, and extending obliquely to the section member itself.
  • It is also provided that at least one upper wing and at least one lower wing should project from said vertical wall in a substantially perpendicular direction, thereby defining a longitudinal groove arranged to operatively house a spring support framework.
  • In particular the longitudinal groove operatively engages the respective ends of staves constituting said spring support framework. Preferably, formed close to the lower end of the vertical wall is at least one coupling housing extending over the whole length of the corresponding section member and adapted to operatively receive connecting plates for fastening appropriate bedposts to the perimetric bedframe.
  • Said coupling housing has a substantially T-shaped configuration and is preferably encircled and defined by a lower wing projecting perpendicularly to the vertical wall from the lower end of the vertical wall itself, an additional wall extending downwardly from the lower wing parallelly to the vertical wall, and a pair of closure tailpieces extending towards each other from the lower end of the vertical wall and the additional wall, respectively.
  • Preferably the bedposts are held by at least one pair of support crosspieces to be positioned along said longitudinal section members and rigidly engaged thereto through tightening of threaded elements associated with said connecting plates which are associated with the opposite ends of the support crosspieces.
  • In a preferred embodiment, the head section members are substantially shaped in the same manner as the longitudinal section members and are engaged thereto by joints each of which comprises a main body provided with a pair of coupling plugs fastened one after the other at a right angle and each engaged, preferably by forced fitting, in a through cavity substantially defined between the vertical wall and the supporting wall of each of said section members.
  • Said main body also has a ribbing extending perimetrically in the junction area between the plugs in order to offer an abutment seating for the ends of said longitudinal and head section members.
  • Preferably each of said joints also comprises an angular reinforcing insert to be operatively engaged in the longitudinal grooves defined in the vertical walls of said longitudinal and head section members.
  • Further features and advantages will become more apparent from the detailed description of a preferred embodiment of a resting bed susceptible of being supplied with accessories, in accordance with the present invention. This description will be given hereinafter by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
    • Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a resting bed in accordance with the present invention, provided with several different accessories;
    • Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of one of the section members forming the perimetric frame, with which a slidable supporting top is associated;
    • Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of one of the section members, to which a lamp is removably fastened;
    • Fig. 4 is an exploded perspective view showing the connection between one of the longitudinal section members and one of the head section members.
  • Referring to the drawings, a resting bed susceptible of being supplied with accessories in accordance with the present invention has been generally identified by reference numeral 1.
  • The resting bed 1 comprises a perimetric frame 2 consisting of at least two longitudinal section members 3 and at least two head section members 4 interconnected with said longitudinal section members at the respective ends.
  • The longitudinal members are preferentially made of metal materials, aluminium for example.
  • The perimetric frame 2 kept to a predetermined height from the floor by supporting elements 5 or bedposts, carries a spring support framework 6, arranged to bear one or more mattresses not shown.
  • In the embodiment described, the spring support framework 6 is comprised of a plurality of laths or staves 7 disposed parallelly side by side and extending transversely to the longitudinal extension of bed 1, between one of the longitudinal section members 3 and a longitudinal middle member 8 extending between the head section members 4. End panels 9 engaged to the perimetric bedframe 2 close to the opposite bedheads 1 may also be provided in combination with staves 7.
  • As better viewed from Figs. 2, 3 and 4, in accordance with the invention it is provided that at least the longitudinal section members 3 but preferably the head section members 4 as well should have, seen in section, a profile comprising at least one vertical wall 10 forming the inner surface of the perimetric frame 2 and at least one supporting wall 11, preferably having a curvilinear configuration, extending downwardly from the upper end 10a of the vertical wall 10 and gradually departing therefrom towards the outer part of the perimetric frame 2.
  • The supporting wall 11 defines a continuous supporting surface 11a in the extension of the corresponding section member 3, 4. In a preferential embodiment, the supporting wall 11 has a semicircular profile and is connected to the upper 10a and lower 10b ends of the vertical wall 10 by substantially horizontal upper and lower connecting portions, 12 and 13 respectively.
  • The supporting wall 11 could however have a profile different from the above described one and could for example be in the form of an arc of a parabola. The profile of the supporting wall 11 can also be rectilinear and extend obliquely with respect to the vertical wall 10.
  • Preferentially, in this solution the wall 11 exhibits arcs connecting it to the remaining portions of the longitudinal member.
  • Advantageously, disposed close to the upper end 10a of the vertical wall 10 is at least one grip lug 14 substantially projecting towards the inner part of the perimetric frame 2 and defining a guide rib 14a along the section member 3. In the embodiment shown, the grip lug 14 is provided in the extension of the horizontal upper connecting portion 12 and has a swollen free end 14b.
  • The above described configuration enables a variety of accessories of any desired type to be advantageously associated with the bed 1 in a very pratical and reliable manner.
  • The detachable connection of said accessories is of the slidable type so that the translation of an accessory along the outer contour of the corresponding section member 3 or 4 is allowed, although said connection may also be of the fixed type, if desired.
  • In the accompanying figures some accessories to be associated with frame 2 by a slidable connection are embodied, just as an indication, by a supporting top 15 and a side rail 16. Referring to Fig. 2 in particular which highlights the slidable connection of the supporting top 15, provision is made for at least one grasping tailpiece 17 to be associated with the supporting top itself as well as the side rail 16 or an accessory of another type. Said grasping tailpiece 17 is substantially in the form of a hook to be oscillatably anchored to the guide rib 14a defined by the grip lug 14. Also associated with the supporting top 15, side rail 16 or accessory of another type, in combination with the grasping tailpiece 17, is at least one abutment portion 18 the shape of which preferably matches the shape of the supporting wall 11, which is arranged to act against said supporting wall so as to hold said supporting top 15 according to a predetermined orientation.
  • Advantageously, the adhering of the abutment portion 18 to the supporting surface 11a, also assisted by the wide extension of the supporting wall 11 resulting from the curvilinear configuration of the same, ensures a stable positioning of the supporting top 15, side rail 16 or other accessories along the corresponding section member 3 or 4 and enables a wide and safe guiding when the accessory needs to be moved. The translation of the supporting top 15, side rail 16 or other accessories along the corresponding section member 3 or 4 may be promoted by the use of materials having a low friction coefficient between the contact surfaces 17 and 14.
  • Alternatively, the translation of the supporting top 15, side rail 16 or other accessories may be merely obtained by slightly rotating the accessory itself about the engagement point offered by the grasping tailpiece 17, which rotation is sufficient to cause the separation of the abutment portion 18 from the supporting surface 11a and thereby enable the accessory to be moved to the new desired position.
  • Reference is now made to a connection of the fixed type, in the embodiment shown said type of connection being used for a lamp 19.
  • As clearly shown in Fig. 3, for a connection of the fixed type it is provided that not only the grasping tailpiece 17 and the abutment portion 18 described with reference to the supporting top 15 and side rail 16 be associated with the lamp 19 or other accessories, but also at least one elastically deformable coupling tailpiece 20 provided in the extension of the abutment portion and designed to be snap fitted in an undercut 20a exhibited by the corresponding section member 3 or 4, in combination with the supporting wall 11. In the embodiment shown this undercut 20a is defined by the semicircular configuration exhibited by the supporting wall 11.
  • For achieving the lamp fastening to any point of the extension of one of the section members 3 or 4 it is therefore sufficient to engage first the grasping tailpiece 17 along the rib 14a and then, by a downwardly oriented rotational movement, cause the snap-fitting of the coupling tailpiece 20 to the section member itself. Obviously, by acting in the opposite way it will be possible to disengage the lamp 19 or other accessories from the section member 3 or 4. In addition it is also possible to engage the tailpiece 17 on the swelling 14b by elastic bending deformation. In accordance with one embodiment, accessories may be made of stiff plastic material so that, by expressly selecting appropriate cross sections, it will be possible to give them the desired features of elastic deformation enabling them to be held on parts of the longitudinal member.
  • A second modality of slidable connection for other accessories along the section members 3 and 4 is also provided in accordance with the invention. In the connection said further accessory, that in the embodiment shown is represented by a head 21, is intended to be provided with at least one supporting bracket 22 oriented obliquely to the corresponding section member 3 or 4 and exhibiting, close to an end portion 22a thereof, first and second locator pegs 23, 24 projecting at right angles from the bracket 22 and arranged to act against upper and lower surfaces 12a and 13a respectively, of the corresponding section member 3 or 4. In the example shown, said upper and lower surfaces 12a and 13a are embodied by the horizontal connecting portions 12, 13 previously specified.
  • Under this situation, the locator pegs 23, 24 lend themselves to interact with the section member 3 or 4 in order to resist the moment of rotation generated at the end portion 22a of bracket 22, by effect of the weight of the head 21 and the user's body resting thereon. In order to move the head 21 along the bed 1 it will be sufficient to slightly lift it so as to cause the separation of pegs 23, 24 from the respective upper and lower surfaces 12a and 13a, which will enable them to slide along the section members 3 or 4.
  • Advantageously, at least one upper wing 25 and one lower wing 26 project from the vertical wall 10 and are perpendicularly spaced apart from each other. The presence of these wings defines a longitudinal groove 27 in the extension of the section member 3 or 4, which groove, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is intended for operatively housing the ends 7a of staves 7, upon interposition of inserts 28 of plastic material or the like.
  • The grooves 27 of the longitudinal section members 3 are also adapted to house the corresponding side edges of the end panels 9 previously mentioned with reference to the spring support framework 6.
  • In accordance with a further feature of the present invention, at least one coupling housing 29 is provided to be formed close to the lower end 10b of the vertical wall 10; said coupling housing 29 extends over the whole length of the respective section member 3 or 4 defining at least one undercut therealong. In a preferential solution, this coupling housing 29 is encircled and defined by the lower wing 26, the lower end 10b of the vertical wall 10, an additional wall 30 extending downwardly from the lower wing 26 parallelly to the vertical wall 10, and a pair of closure tailpieces 31 extending towards each other from the lower end 10b of the vertical wall 10 and the additional wall 30 respectively, in coplanar relation with the lower connecting portion 13.
  • The coupling housing 29 has a substantially T-shaped profile and is adapted to house one or more connecting plates 32 conformed to the shape of said coupling housing and arranged to fasten the bedposts 5 to the perimetric frame 2. In greater detail, provision is made for a plurality of connecting plates 32 operatively engaged to the opposite ends of two support crosspieces 33, each of which can be positioned along the longitudinal section members 3 and secured to the desired position by locking of the connecting plates 32 into the coupling housings 29, with the aid of threaded elements 34 or equivalent means.
  • Preferentially the middle longitudinal member 8 laterally exhibits, seen in cross-section, two T-shaped coupling housings, as shown by 29 in Fig 2; such housings are designed to connect the support crosspiece 33 provided with the bedposts 5 to the middle longitudinal member 8.
  • In this case too, connection is carried out by means of plates and screws, as already shown in Fig. 4.
  • As previously said, in a preferential solution the head section members 4 may advantageously exhibit a profile seen in cross-section substantially identical with the one described with reference to the longitudinal section members 3. Therefore it will be advantageously possible to associate any accessories along the head section members 4 as well, in the same manner as previously described.
  • The connection between each longitudinal section member 3 and each head section member 4 takes place, at the ends of the head section members, by joints 35. As clearly shown in Fig. 4, each joint 35 comprises a main body 36 substantially consisting of a pair of coupling plugs 36a, 36b fastened one after the other at a right angle and each adapted to be engaged, preferably by forced fitting, in a through cavity 37 substantially defined between the vertical wall 10 and the supporting wall 11 of each of the section members. Preferably, the coupling plugs 36a, 36b are conformed to the shape of said through cavities 37. A ribbing 36c extending perimetrically at the junction area between the plugs 36a, 36b and being of a height substantially equal to the thickness of the vertical wall 10 and supporting wall 11 offers an abutment seating for the ends of the section members 3 or 4, previously cut to 45°.
  • Preferably, also combined with the main body 36 is an angular reinforcing insert 38 adapted to be engaged and fastened, for example by means of threaded members not shown or other equivalent means, to the inside of the longitudinal grooves 27 defined between the upper and lower wings 25 and 27 of section members 3 and 4.
  • According to one embodiment, the main body 36 and angular reinforcing insert 38 are of one piece construction.
  • The angular reinforcing insert is preferentially disposed both between the section members 3 and 4 as shown in Fig. 1 and in the angular region between the middle longitudinal member 8 and section members 4, and more preferentially in all selected positions the angular insert is fastened to the longitudinal members by appropriate screws.
  • According to one embodiment the longitudinal grooves 27 of the head section members 4 are also utilised for housing the corresponding edges of the end panels 9 belonging to the spring support framework 6, as well as the ends of the middle longitudinal member 8.
  • By virtue of the section member configuration, the bed in question is adapted to receive in combination any type of desired accessory by detachable engagement of said accessory with the perimetric frame, very practical and easy operations being required.
  • It should be noted that a slidable connection of the accessories along the section members of the perimetric frame has been achieved without the aid of complicated and bulky carriages or similar devices which are instead needed in the known art. The use of these carriages, among other things, has hitherto inevitably conditioned bed studies and plannings both from an aesthetic point of view and in relation to the structure strength, due to the great bulkiness of said carriages and the necessity of using additional section members for defining the carriage guideways. Practically in the known art, in addition to the housings provided in the inner surface of the section member for receiving the stave ends, it was also necessary to form further housings therein which were designed to guide the possible displacements of carriages to be associated with the accessories intended for arrangement to the outside of the bedframe, alongside the longitudinal member and spaced apart therefrom.
  • The above solution obliged the longitudinal member to be very bulky which resulted in greater masses involved and complications in assembling and servicing operations.
  • On the contrary, the essential shape of the section members used in the inventive bed enables an important reduction in height, since carriages for moving the accessory elements have been eliminated and the outer contour of the longitudinal member has been used as a supporting and slide surface for said accessories.
  • The practical use and operating qualities of the present invention are also enhanced by the possibility of mounting and dismantling any accessory to and from the perimetric frame at any moment, through very simple operations.
  • The very reduced bulkiness of the grip tailpieces associated with the different accessories also ensures the complete freedom of movement of said accessories along the section members, without involving risks of interferences and/or jammings in the bed linen, which on the contrary could occur in known solutions using carriage slide means.
  • Attention is drawn to the great assembling simplicity of the bed in question, since the operations for assembling the different parts are very few and easy.
  • In particular the longitudinal member shown and described is advantageously adapted to accomplish several functions at the same time, in that its outer contour represents a support and slide surface for several different accessories, its longitudinal cavity enables the introduction of means for angular connection with another longitudinal member and its inner portion is provided with housings adapted to receive the spring staves.
