Definitions

  • the present invention relates to improvements made to electrical connectors comprising several contacts retained in respective housings of an insulating body housed inside a connector housing, connection means being provided for electrically connecting respective sections of said contacts. which are electrically isolated from the respective bodies of the contacts.
  • the contacts are provided with an auxiliary component in tubular form (for example filtering element, clipping element, varistor, etc.) which is integrated into the body of the contact and which must be connected to an electrical potential. different from that of the contact body (mass potential in particular).
  • This tubular component is housed in an annular recess in the contact body in such a way that the continuity of the external surface of the contact is ensured.
  • ground plate a metal plate pierced with holes through each of which a contact is engaged.
  • Each hole is bordered by several lamellae pushed out of the face of the plate and defining a passage narrower than the diameter of the contact: these lips are therefore in elastic support on the contact section which extends through the hole.
  • This solution has the advantage of simple manufacturing, since the plate is obtained by a cutting-die-cutting operation which is inexpensive.
  • the object of the invention is precisely to propose a technical solution making it possible to avoid the drawback presented by the current structure, while conferring the additional advantage that the means used have general dimensions identical to those of the mass plate. used so far and they can therefore not only be used in connectors during manufacture, but also be implemented in pre-existing connectors in place of the current ground plate.
  • each contact is not subjected to any blocking force in a preferred direction and it is possible to remove a contact (for example by extracting it from the rear), then to introduce a new one without damage. other component parts.
  • the replacement of a contact, for example after damage to it, can be carried out in a simple and rapid manner and the maintenance of the connector is much less costly.
  • each contact ring extends in a helix over a length of between three-quarters of a turn and one winding turn, so that it exerts a sufficient clamping force on the contact section and thus it ensures good electrical contact, at the same time that it is well retained on the contact whatever its state of compression.
  • Figure 1 shows the essential components an electrical connector with a large number of contacts, a type of connector which seems to be best suited to the provisions of the invention, although from a strictly technological point of view these provisions can also be implemented in connectors with a small number of contacts.
  • the connector comprises a rectangular housing 1, of the base type to be fixed on a support, which is arranged to present several housings 2 intended to receive respective blocks of contacts 3 of which only one is shown.
  • Each contact block 3 is of generally parallelepiped shape and is retained in its housing 2 in any suitable manner known to those skilled in the art.
  • the arrangement shown is indicated only by way of example, to fix the ideas, and the provisions specific to the invention which will now be explained can just as easily be adopted for electrical connectors of different types (cylindrical connectors especially).
  • the contact block 3 comprises an insulating body 4 pierced with a multiplicity of housings 5 suitable for receiving respective electrical contacts 6 (here of the male type with active termination in the form of pins), the housings 5 and the contacts 6 being configured for that the contacts are introduced into or removed from the housings from the rear of said housings. Contacts are retained in the accommodation anyway known to those skilled in the art.
  • the insulating body 4 is formed in the form of two insulating blocks, the insulating block 4 a provided with housings 5 a being situated towards the rear and the insulating block 4 b provided with housings 5 b being situated towards the front.
  • the contacts 6 each comprise a tubular section 7 which is electrically isolated from the contact body and which can be brought to an electrical potential different from that of the contact body (for example filtered contact, varistor contact, etc.).
  • the section 7 extends approximately at the right of the interface between the two insulating blocks 4 a and 4 b in the mounting position of the contacts.
  • Each section 7 is surrounded by a contact ring 8 which is shown, on a larger scale, in FIGS. 2A and 2B.
  • Each contact ring 8 is made of an elastically deformable electrically conductive material (for example in treated berrylium bronze, silvered on the surface to improve its conductivity) and is wound in a helix extending over at least a half-turn of winding. (preferably between three-quarters of a turn - as shown in FIGS. 2A and 2B - and one turn), by elastically enclosing the section 7.
  • two rigid clamping plates 9 On either side of the contact rings 8 are arranged two rigid clamping plates 9, at least one of which (and preferably both) is made of an electrically conductive material, in particular of good conductive metal (for example Brass).
  • the plates 9 are pierced with a multiplicity of holes 10, in correspondence with the holes 5 a , 5 b of the insulating blocks, which are dimensioned for the free sliding passage of the contacts 6, but to retain the contact rings 8.
  • the plates 9 may have holes 11 (located here at the angles of the plates) in which are engaged clamping screws (shown diagrammatically by the axes 12 in phantom).
  • the insulating blocks 5 a and 5 b are mechanically associated with the plates 9; for this purpose, they each have an insulating support plate, respectively 13 a and 13 b , brought into contact with the clamping plates 9; the support plate 13 b of the front insulating body 4 b is also provided with holes 14 b in its angles so as to receive the clamping screws 12.
  • the clamping screws are screwed into the housing 1 and, building on the support plate 13 b , they compress and maintain the stack of all the components in the corresponding housing 2.
  • each contact ring 8 This establishes an electrical connection of each contact ring 8 with the associated section 7, on the one hand, and with one of the plates 9 or the two plates 9, on the other hand; all the sections 7 of the contacts 6 are therefore joined to the same electrical potential which is that of the plate or plates 9; these are joined, by connection means not shown, to a determined electrical potential, for example the electrical ground.
  • This connection can for example be made by one of the contacts of the block 3, devoid of section 7, with which the plate or plates 9 are in electrical connection in the same manner as with the sections 7 of the other contacts.
  • each contact 6 can be removed from the insulating block 4 (here from the rear) individually, without resulting in damage to the other component parts, and a new contact can be introduced in the same way. (here from the back).
  • the operation of replacing a damaged or defective contact is therefore simpler and less time-consuming than for the previous connectors and above all there is no longer any need to completely disassemble the contact block and replace the parts. electrical interconnection as was the case before.
  • the thickness of the clamping plates 9 can be very small (for example 0.8 mm) and the thickness of each contact ring 8 in the compressed position can also be very small (for example 0.3 mm), so that the overall thickness of the interconnection pieces remains substantially that (approximately 1.2 mm) of a ground plate used until now. It follows that the means according to the invention can be implemented in a pre-existing connector, instead of the ground plate with which it was originally fitted.
  • the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of application and embodiments which have been more particularly envisaged; on the contrary, it embraces all its variants.
  • the ring is indicated as being a section of circular projection propeller since it is likely that this shape is the one which should be the most commonly used, it is also possible to provide rings having different shapes in projection, either with continuous curvature (for example in ellipse, oval, etc.) or with polygonal outline (in particular square, rectangular, hexagonal, etc.).
