Description

The invention relates to a method according to the preamble of claim 1 and a device according to the preamble of claim 5.

Such an apparatus and such a method is described in DE-PS 31 24 688. There is generally described a method and an apparatus for drying tape or sheet-shaped photographic supports. In the method described there, the heat radiation emitted by the heating elements can be varied depending on the material to be dried. When drying photographic substrates in which there are large differences in the degree of blackening on one substrate, it is possible in the prior art do not preset an optimal intensity of the heat radiation, because areas that are not exposed to light are bright and absorb the heat to a lesser extent than the strongly exposed and thus dark areas of the photographic support. If the intensity is set to a fixed value, there is a risk that either the bright areas will not dry sufficiently or the dark areas will be damaged by overheating.

The object of the invention is therefore to specify a method and to provide an apparatus for carrying out the method, with which uniform and film-gentle drying can be achieved despite partially different heat absorption of the photographic support.

The object is achieved by the characterizing features of method claim 1 and by the characterizing features of device claim 5.

The invention adopts the knowledge that heat radiation, the intensity of which is automatically regulated in accordance with the degree of absorption of the substrate, avoids that the substrate is either not completely dried or damaged by overheating. For this purpose, a measuring sensor is provided which measures the degree of absorption of the photographic support at the point which is exposed to the thermal radiation.

Further refinements of the invention result from the subclaims.

A possible embodiment of the invention is explained in more detail with reference to a figure.

The figure shows a film 1, which is transported in the direction of arrow T by a transport device, not shown. The film passes through a drying device. Several heating elements 2 are arranged in this drying device. A mirror 3 concentrates the heat radiation emitted by the heating elements 2 on the film 1. Windows 4 are present in the material of the mirror 3, behind which measuring elements 5 are arranged. Each measuring element detects an area 6 on the film 1 and measures the thermal radiation penetrating the film.

On the side of the film 1 opposite the measuring elements 5 there is a reference sensor 7 which directly measures the heat radiation emitted by the heating elements 2.

Durch eine Steuereinrichtung 8 erfolgt ein automatisches Einstellen der von den Heizelementen 2 abgegebenen WärmestrahlungsintensitätThe transmission of the film 1 in the region 6 can be determined on the basis of the signals supplied by the measuring element 5 and by the reference sensor 7. With several measuring elements 5, each measuring the transmission of the film 1 at different points, an average value of the transmission can be calculated for the area of the film 1 which is currently in the drying device. The transmission is a measure of the degree of absorption of the thermal radiation in the substrate. At high The degree of absorption is low, but high for low transmission. A control device 8 automatically adjusts the heat radiation intensity emitted by the heating elements 2

As the film 1 is transported further in the direction of the arrow T, another part of the film 1 reaches the drying device. The transmission present in this part of the film is immediately detected by the measuring elements 5. Based on the new measured values, if necessary, the heat radiation intensity emitted by the heating elements 2 is changed immediately. This ensures that the part of the film 1 located in the drying device is always irradiated with the correct intensity, even if the transmission of the film, viewed over the entire film surface, is very different.

The degree of heat absorption of the film 1 can also be determined on the basis of the heat radiation emitted by the film 1. If the intensity of the thermal radiation emitted by the heating elements is known, the degree of absorption can be calculated from the measured value for the thermal radiation emitted by the film 1.
