Description

Reinigung von öl- und fettbeladenem Abwasser Treatment of waste water containing oil and grease
The invention relates to the use of talc as an agent for cleaning oil and grease-laden wastewater.
In industrial processes, the removal of organic impurities and numerous washing processes result in dispersions of water-insoluble organic materials in an aqueous phase in which the organic phase is in the form of very fine particles and often even in colloidal form. The separation of such dispersions presents extraordinary difficulties.
In the processes previously used for separation, additional chemical products are used in most cases as separation aids, which in turn pollute either the cleaned wastewater or the resulting sludges, which in turn have to be disposed of.
In the field of oil-containing wastewater, which is a mixture of water with a wide variety of hydrocarbon compounds, the hydrocarbons exist in different basic forms, the occurrence of which the previous cleaning measures were based on. In the case of the hydrocarbons which are undissolved in the wastewater, separation in light material separators can be carried out with the aid of gravity. Mostly, however Hydrocarbons in the wastewater in dissolved or emulsified form and can therefore only be eliminated by chemical-physical processes, the flocculation, precipitation and flotation processes being used in particular.
Flocculation is understood as a comprehensive term for all those processes in which emulsified or suspended substances are separated off, whereas the precipitation relates to the removal of dissolved substances. Flocculants are substances which, after dissolving in water, are converted into voluminous precipitates and well destabilize suspensions or emulsions. However, this creates an additional volume of sludge, which must be treated further.
Flotation is understood to mean the floating of a substance in a liquid, due to the introduction of the smallest possible gas bubbles. After the flotate has accumulated on the surface of the liquid, it can be removed from the system by means of surface clearers.
Another option for cleaning oily wastewater is to use specially adapted natural microorganisms. Due to the biological metabolism, this is a real disposal in which the pollutants are actually broken down and not just relocated. The However, the rate of degradation is strongly dependent on the temperature and the nutrient supply and can also take several years.
Adsorption methods are also frequently used for wastewater treatment, the hydrocarbons being bound to activated carbon or to adsorber resins. The adsorption on mica materials (DE-OS 1 167 278) or on an organophilic clay (DE-OS 37 19 929) has also already been investigated.
No. 4,332,693 proposes a chemical agent for the treatment of oily emulsions in industrial waste water, which consists of a multicomponent mixture with a predominant proportion of acid-activated bentonite, untreated bentonite, lime and aluminum sulfate as well as small amounts of adipic acid, talc and flocculant.
The subsequent disposal of the loaded materials is usually carried out by incineration or by regeneration of the adsorbent using a stripper.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that talc with a certain grain size is an excellent means of separating oils and fats from wastewater loaded with them.
With the term "talk" a group of naturally upcoming, widely used magnesium silicates. Talke is characterized, among other things, by a low hardness (1 according to Mohs), a smooth handle, hydrophobic properties and good adsorption capacity for organic substances. In the context of the use of finely divided talc according to the invention, the use of talc with a grain size of 90-3 μm has proven to be particularly advantageous. At these particle sizes on the one hand an optimal adsorption capacity for water polluting oils U is present nd fats, on the other hand of the so-laden talc can easily flocculated suspended solids along with the other and disposed of with the resulting slurry.
The use of talc according to the invention as an adsorbent can expediently be carried out in all companies which produce large amounts of waste water which is contaminated with high oil and fat loads. The contaminated waste water from leather factories, slaughterhouses, refineries, large paint shops and the like are particularly suitable for the waste water treatment according to the invention. Practical tests have shown that the use of talc as an adsorbent gives good results for both animal and mineral fats; both types are well bound to the talc.
The amount of finely divided talc used will primarily depend on the concentration of the contaminant to be removed in the wastewater. This amount of talc can be of the order of magnitude be about 100 mg per 1 liter of waste water.
Use in leather factories is given as an example of the use according to the invention of finely divided talc as an adsorbent. This contains a fatty wastewater with a COD value of up to 10,000. After treating this wastewater with a talc with a grain size of 30 μm in an amount of 30 - 100 mg per 1 l of wastewater, the COD value dropped to below 5,000. A further reduction in the COD value is not desirable in all cases, because otherwise the biological processes in the clarifier could be disturbed. The addition of finely divided talc thus not only results in a reduction in the COD value of up to 50%, but also produces a more settable sludge, which can be discharged more easily and dewatered more easily. Furthermore, due to the marked reduction in the COD value, considerable savings in electrical energy can be achieved for the aerators in aerobic wastewater treatment.
