Abstract
A holding device for receiving an externally threaded end portion of a shaft or rod member (29) comprises a socket member (15). The socket member has a first bore (16) with internal threads for engaging with the external threads of the end portion of the rod member (29) and a second bore (17) with a diameter equal to or slightly exceeding the maximum outer diameter of the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member (29). The axis of the second bore (17) intersects the axis of the first bore (16) and defines an acute angle (a) therewith. The externally threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member (29) may then be inserted axially into the second bore (17) and thereafter brought into an engaged position in which the external threads of the end portion engages with the internal threads of the first bore (16), by a tilting movement of the end portion through said acute angle. The holding device may for example be used for mounting chemical anchors.
Description
- The present invention relates to a holding device for receiving an externally threaded end portion of a shaft or rod member, said device comprising a socket member defining therein a first bore having internal threads for engaging with the external threads of said end portion.
- Such a holding device may be used for releasably holding an end portion of a spindle or a screw, such as a stay bolt-screw or any other shaft or rod member having an externally threaded end portion. The holding device may then be mounted on an apparatus or machine, such as a drilling machine, for imparting a rotational and/or a percussive movement or any other desired movement to the shaft or rod member, which may, for example, be one end of a tool. Alternatively, the shaft or rod member may be part of a screw member which is to be screwed and/or hammered into a threaded or non-threaded bored hole. As an example, the shaft or rod member may be or form part of a so-called chemical anchor, which is usually an externally threaded spindle or headless screw which is anchored in a non-threaded hole bored in concrete, brick or rock material or similar materials by means of a quickly hardening adhesive or glue.
- The externally threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member may be mounted in the holding device by being screwed into the internally threaded bore defined in the socket member. When the rather heavy rotational and/or percussive forces have been transmitted through such a screw connection, it cannot easily and quickly be released without transferring undesired forces and movements to the shaft or rod member. This is rather disadvantageous, for example when the shaft or rod member forms part of a chemical anchor which has just been mounted and where the adhesive or glue has not yet totally hardened.
- Alternatively, the holding device may comprise gripping jaws for clamping the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member. Such gripping jaws tend to damage the external threads of the end portion of the shaft or rod member which may require later rethreading when the shaft or rod member has been mounted.
- Furthermore, externally threaded chemical anchor members having recesses or heads formed at one end for engaging with the holding device, are well known. As chemical anchor members are needed in a variety of different diameters and lengths, such system requires that a reasonable number of each diameter and length is kept in stock.
- The present invention provides a holding device of the above type which may drivingly receive an externally threaded end portion of a shaft or rod member without damaging the external threads of such end portion, and which holding device permits quick fastening and release of the threaded end portion.
- The present invention provides a holding device for receiving an externally threaded portion of a shaft or rod member, said device comprising a socket member defining therein a first bore having internal threads for engaging with the external threads of said end portion, and the holding device according to the invention is characterized in that the socket member further defines a second bore having a diameter equal to or slightly exceeding the maximum outer diameter of the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member, the axis of the second bore intersecting the axis of the first bore and defining an acute angle therewith so that the externally threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member may be axially inserted into the second bore and thereafter brought into an engaged position in which the external threads of the end portion engages with the internal threads of the first bore, by a tilting movement of the end portion through said angle, provided that the first and second bores are interconnected along the total length thereof and the width of such interconnection permits such tilting movement, for example by having a width being substantially equal to the diameter of the bores.
- The externally threaded end portion may be inserted axially into the second bore which is normally non-threaded. Thereafter, the threaded end portion may be moved into the threaded first bore and engaged with its internal threads by a simple tilting movement through the acute angle. The end portion may be released by tilting the shaft or rod member in the opposite direction whereafter the threaded end portion may be withdrawn axially.
- In order to prevent that the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member is inadvertently tilted from its engaged position within the cited first bore, the holding device according to the invention preferably comprises means of some kind for releasably retaining the end portion of the shaft or rod member in said engaged position. Such means may comprise any type of means which may retain the threaded end portion within the threaded first bore. As an example, such releasably retaining means may comprise a retractable retaining member which may be moved transversely through the second bore and into engagement with the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member. In the preferred embodiment, however, the holding device further comprises an abutment member, and the retaining means may then comprise an abutment surface defined by the abutment member for engaging with a free end of the threaded end portion in its engaged position. Thus, when the threaded end portion of the rod or shaft member has been tilted into the threaded first bore, the free end of the threaded end portion may be screwed into firm engagement with the abutment member, so that return tilting is prevented.
- The socket member may be pivotally mounted on the abutment member, the pivot axis extending substantially diametrically in relation to the first bore. The free end of the threaded end portion may then be moved out of engagement with the abutment surface by pivotal movement of the socket member and the threaded end portion received therein in relation to the abutment member. Thereafter, the threaded end portion may be tilted from the threaded first bore into the second bore and be axially removed therefrom.
- The retaining means may comprise releasably locking means for locking the socket and abutment members in a relative position in which the abutment surface extends at substantially right angles to the axis of the threaded first bore. Thus, unintentional pivotal movement of the socket and abutment members may be prevented.
- In order to ensure that the free end of the threaded end portion may be moved out of a firm engagement with the abutment surface by relative pivotal movement of the socket and abutment members about the said pivot axis, the abutment surface is preferably located substantially between a plane which is defined by the pivot axis and the longitudinal axis of the first bore, and the longitudinal axis of the second bore.
- The abutment surface may have any desired contour or shape, and may comprise two or more separated abutment points or surfaces, if desired. In the preferred embodiment, however, the abutment surface is substantially of a semi-circular shape.
- In order to more safely retain the threaded portion in its engaged position within the threaded first bore, the abutment member may further define a peripheral retaining surface extending axially from the circumference of the abutment surface for engaging with a peripheral surface part of the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member when the free end of the threaded end portion is in engagement with the abutment surface. Such peripheral retaining surface preferably has a maximum peripheral extension of 180 in order to permit release of the firm engagement of the free end of the threaded end portion and the abutment surface by a relative pivotal movement of the socket and abutment members as described above.
- The locking means may comprise a sleeve-like member which is axially displaceable between an interlocking position in which the inner surface of the sleeve-like member engages with complementary cylindrical outer surface parts defined by the abutment member and by the socket member, respectively, and a releasing position in which the sleeve-like member is out of engagement with the socket member. Furthermore, the sleeve-like member may be spring biased towards its interlocking position.
- Thus, the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member may be inserted axially into the second bore, while the sleeve-like member is in its interlocking position. Thereafter the threaded end portion is tilted into its engaged position within the first bore and screwed a few times till a firm engagement between the free end of the threaded end portion and the abutment surface is obtained. Now, a rotational and/or a percussive movement may be imparted to the shaft or rod member by means of a hammer drill or another driving machine. When the shaft or rod member is in the desired positions the sleeve-like member may be retracted to its releasing position against the spring bias so as to permit a relative pivotal movement of the abutment and socket members in order to release the firm engagement between the abutment surface and the free end of the threaded end portion of the shaft or rod member. Thereafter, the threaded end portion may be tilted into the second, non-threaded bore and retracted axially therefrom.
- The invention will now be further described with reference to the drawings, wherein
- Fig. 1 is a side view and partially sectional view of an embodiment of the holding device according to the invention,
- Fig. 2 is an end view of the holding device shown in Fig. 1,
- Figs. 3 and 4 are side views as that shown in Fig. 1 illustrating steps of inserting an externally threaded rod member in the holding device,
- Fig. 5 is a side view and partially sectional view illustrating how the threaded rod member may be inserted into and anchored in a hole in a wall, and
- Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate how the holding device may be released from the threaded rod member, when it has been anchored in the wall.
- The holding device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a
body member 10 having ashaft 11 and anabutment member 12 formed integrally therewith at opposite ends. The free end of theshaft 11 may have channels and/orrecesses 13 formed therein so that theshaft 11 may be received in achuck 14 of a driving machine, such as a hammer drilling machine, not shown. - The holding device further comprises a
cylindrical socket member 15 having a central, axial threadedbore 16 formed therein. Anon-threaded bore 17 having substantially the same diameter as the threadedbore 16 is also formed in thesocket member 15. Thelongitudinal axis 18 of thenon-threaded bore 17 intersects the longitudinal axis 19 of the central, threadedbore 16 and defines an acute angle "a" therewith as shown in Fig. 1. Thesocket member 15 is pivotally mounted on theabutment member 12 by means of apivot pin 20, which extends substantially at right angles to a plane defined by theaxes 18 and 19 of thebores bore 16. - A substantially
semi-circular abutment surface 21, which extends substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of theshaft 11, is located substantially at one side of a plane defined by the intersecting axis of thepivot pin 20 and of theshaft 11, respectively, and opposite to the adjacent opening of the non-threadedbore 17. A rim portion orflange portion 22 extends axially from the semi-circular periphery of theabutment surface 21. At the opposite side of the plane defined by the axis of thepivot pin 20 and the axis of theshaft 11, respectively, theabutment member 12 has aninclined surface part 23. - A sleeve-
like locking member 24 having an outerknurled surface part 25 is positioned around theabutment member 12 and may be moved axially in relation thereto. The sleeve-like locking member 24 has an inner, radially extendingflange 26, and a coiled spring orhelical spring 27 is arranged in a space defined by the outer surface of thebody member 10 and the inner surface of thelocking member 24, and the opposite ends of thespring 27 are engaging with oppositely directed annular abutment surfaces defined by theinner flange 26 of thelocking member 24 and by a cylindricalouter enlargement 28 forming an integral part of thebody member 10. The outer cylindrical surfaces of thesocket member 15 and of theenlargement 28 correspond substantially to the inner cylindrical surface of the sleeve-like locking member 24 so as to define a loose fit permitting axial movement of the sleeve-like locking member 24 in relation to thebody member 10 and thesocket member 15 under the bias of thespring 27. - The holding device described above and shown in the drawings is operated as follows:
- Figs. 1-3 show the holding device in a starting position in which the longitudinal axis of the
socket member 15 and of the threadedbore 16 is coinciding with the longitudinal axis of theshaft 11. In this position thesocket member 15 is prevented from pivoting about thepivot pin 20 because the sleeve-like locking member 24 is in an extended position in which it partly covers thecylindrical enlargement 28 of thebody member 10 as well as the outer cylindrical surface of thesocket member 15. When the holding device is mounted in thechuck 14 of a driving machine, such as a drilling machine of the percussive type, it may be used for screwing and/or hammering a threaded rod member orscrew member 29 into ahole 30 which has been drilled for example in a wall orceiling 31 with a diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the threadedrod member 29. - As shown in Fig. 3 one end portion of the threaded rod member or the
screw member 29 may be inserted axially into thenon-threaded bore 17, and the outer threads of therod member 29 may thereafter be brought into engagement with the internal threads of thecentral bore 16 as shown in Fig. 4 by a tilting movement through the acute angle "a", so that the longitudinal axis of the threadedrod member 29 is coinciding with the axis of thesocket member 15 and of theshaft 11. In order to prevent therod member 29 from being tilted back into thenon-threaded bore 17 the threadedrod member 29 is now screwed further into the threadedbore 16 till the end surface of therod member 29 comes into engagement with theabutment surface 21. - A breakable capsule 32 (Fig. 5) containing a rapidly hardening adhesive or glue may now be positioned within the drilled
hole 30. When the driving machine or hammer drill on which thechuck 14 is mounted, is operated, a rotational and/or percussive movement maybe imparted to the threadedrod member 29 which is thereby screwed and/or hammered into the hole or bore 30. - The inner end of the threaded
rod member 29 will then crush thecapsule 32 so that theadhesive material 33 contained therein is thoroughly mixed and forced to fill substantially all spaces defined between the inner surface of the hole or bore 30 and the outer surface of the threadedrod member 20. Possible surplus of adhesive material may form an annular bead at the opening of thehole 30 as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The threadedrod member 29 may now be released from the holding device by retracting the sleeve-like locking member 24 from engagement with the outer peripheral surface of thesocket member 25 and against the bias of thespring 27 and by rotating thebody member 10 through a small acute angle about thepivot pin 20 as shown in Fig. 6, whereby theabutment surface 21 and theflange portion 22 is moved out of engagement with the adjacent end of the threadedrod member 29. A further tilting movement of thebody member 10 in the same direction causes thesocket member 15 to tilt in relation to the threadedrod member 29, so that therod member 29 is moved out of engagement with the threads of the bore and into thenon-threaded bore 17. Thesocket member 15 may now be moved axially out of engagement with the threadedrod member 29. - It is understood that the holding device shown in the drawings and described above renders it possible to mount one end portion of a rod member or screw
member 29 in the threaded bore 16 of the socket member very easily and quickly. Furthermore, when the threadedrod member 29 has been mounted it may be released rather quickly by tilting thebody member 10 in relation to thesocket member 15 and by subsequently tilting thesocket member 15 in relation to the threadedrod member 29. Thus, the holding device may be released from the threadedrod member 29 without imparting any substantial axial or rotative forces thereto. - It should be understood that while the invention has especially been described in relation to the anchoring of threaded rod members in bored holes in walls, the holding device according to the invention may be used in any situation where a threaded end portion of any member, such as a tool or implement should be firmly gripped. As an example, the holding device according to the invention could be used for screwing stay screws into the threaded bores.
