Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing decorative aluminum coatings by electrodeposition of aluminum from an organometallic electrolyte.
Organometallic electrolytes can be used for the electrodeposition of aluminum, i.e. organoaluminum complex compounds. Although a large number of compounds have been described which are suitable for galvanic aluminizing, for example onium and alkali complex compounds, in practice for a long time only the complex salt NaF was described as optimal. 2 Al (C₂H₅) ₃ used. Electroplating baths with NaF. 2 Al (C₂H₅) ₃ as an electrolyte salt have a decisive disadvantage for a technically broad and economical application: The spreadability is too low. It is only comparable to that of aqueous chrome baths.
Due to the low spreadability during galvanic aluminizing, strongly profiled parts could only be coated as frame goods where the geometry of the parts permitted, using auxiliary anodes. However, this was a technically very complex and therefore expensive process. Due to the low spreading capacity, the drum aluminizing of small parts was also of no practical importance, since the aluminized parts showed too great fluctuations in layer thickness or were not coated at all in critical areas.
MeF . [(m-n) AlEt₃ . n AlR₃] ,
wobei folgendes gilt:
- Me
- = K, Rb oder Cs,
- Et
- = C₂H₅,
- R
- m
- = 1,3 bis 2,4 und n = 0,1 bis 1,1 (mit m > 2n).
MeF. [(mn) AlEt₃. n AlR₃],
the following applies:
- Me
- = K, Rb or Cs,
- Et
- = C₂H₅,
- R
- = H or C x H 2x + 1 (with x = 1 and 3 to 8), where at least two groups R are alkyl radicals,
- m
- = 1.3 to 2.4 and n = 0.1 to 1.1 (with m> 2n).
The known electrolyte is preferably used in the form of a solution, in 1 to 10 mol of an aromatic hydrocarbon liquid at room temperature, in particular toluene (C₆H₅-CH₃). The galvanic aluminum deposition itself, i.e. the coating is generally carried out at an electrolyte temperature of 100 ° C. Depending on the substrate or its surface quality, the aluminum layers obtained - with a technical application between 5 and 50 µm aluminum - show a light to matt gray appearance. In addition to the nature of the substrate surfaces, the composition of the aluminum electrolytes and the shape of the deposition voltage also play a decisive role in the appearance of the aluminum layers. Aluminum layers that have been deposited with direct current are rougher and darker and more dendritic at the edges than coatings produced with impulse current.
In addition to the appearance, the layer quality is also important for the application of the aluminum coatings of great importance, especially the corrosion and abrasion resistance. Due to the field-oriented growth of the aluminum crystallites, electroplated aluminum coatings have the disadvantage that the decorative appearance and the layer properties are not always satisfactory. This applies in particular to large-area, geometrically complex shaped components that are to be coated at current densities above 1 A / dm².
- 1. Generation of a decorative substrate surface suitable for electroplating, for example by grinding and brushing or by sandblasting and electropolishing; Such methods can also be used for post-treatment.
- 2. Change in the crystal structure by adding additives, in particular gloss substances and leveling agents.
- 3. Deposition with modulated currents, such as wavy direct current, pulsating direct current, bipolar rectangular current and asymmetrical alternating current.
These methods can only be partially implemented in the galvanic deposition of aluminum. For example, mechanical post-treatment processes - due to the low layer thickness (10 to 20 µm) and the hardness (approx. 20 VH) of galvanoaluminium - cannot be used successfully. Even with chemical aftertreatment, the aluminum layers are attacked too strongly, making corrosion protection questionable.
The method that is customary in conventional electroplating today, namely influencing the appearance and the layer quality by means of bath additives, is difficult in the case of metal-organic electrolyte systems for the galvanic deposition of aluminum and still unexplored. For example, the addition of additives known from conventional electroplating, such as coumarin, saccharin, urea and 1,4-butynediol, has not had the desired success from a manufacturing point of view.
The object of the invention is to design a method of the type mentioned above for producing aluminum coatings in such a way that the layer quality - even with current densities above 1 A / dm 2 - is improved with respect to the decorative appearance and also with regard to the metal distribution, the porosity and the purity becomes.
MeF . [(m-n) Al(C₂H₅)₃ . n Al(CH₃)₃] . x Ar,
wobei folgendes gilt:
- Me
- = Na, K, Rb, Cs oder NR₄ (mit R = CH₃ oder C₂H₅),
- m
- = 1,3 bis 2,6 und n = 0,1 bis 1,1 (mit m > 2n),
- Ar
- = aromatischer Kohlenwasserstoff,
- x
- = 1 bis 10,
MeF. [(mn) Al (C₂H₅) ₃. n Al (CH₃) ₃]. x Ar,
the following applies:
- Me
- = Na, K, Rb, Cs or NR₄ (with R = CH₃ or C₂H₅),
- m
- = 1.3 to 2.6 and n = 0.1 to 1.1 (with m> 2n),
- Ar
- = aromatic hydrocarbon,
- x
- = 1 to 10,
Surprisingly, it was found that when using an electrolyte of the type mentioned above - in contrast to other electrolyte systems - and if the pulse current characteristics are observed, aluminum layers with leveling and better layer quality are obtained, even with current densities above 1 A / dm². Electrolyte systems in which this is not the case do not contain aluminum trimethyl Al (CH₃) ₃, but instead have, for example, aluminum tripropyl Al (C₃H₇) ₃ or aluminum tributyl Al (C₄H₉) ₃. Even electrolytes that are only aluminum triethyl Al (C₂H₅) ₃ contain are unsuitable.
In the method according to the invention, the aluminum deposition is preferably carried out at a frequency of approximately 100 Hz. The cathodic / anodic cycle ratio is preferably 4: 1 to 6: 1. The deposition temperature is generally about 70 to 130 ° C. If the electrolyte contains toluene, the aluminum is preferably deposited at a temperature between 95 and 105 ° C.
- Me
- m
- = 1,8 bis 2,2 und/oder
- n
- = 0,2 bis 0,5 und/oder
- Ar
- = C₆H₅-CH₃ und/oder
- x
- = 1 bis 5.
- m =
- 2,0 und/oder n = 0,5 und/oder x = 4.
- Me
- = K or NR₄, where R has the meaning given above, and / or
- m
- = 1.8 to 2.2 and / or
- n
- = 0.2 to 0.5 and / or
- Ar
- = C₆H₅-CH₃ and / or
- x
- = 1 to 5.
- m =
- 2.0 and / or n = 0.5 and / or x = 4.
For example, an electrolyte with the composition KF is obtained. [1.5 Al (C₂H₅) ₃. 0.5 Al (CH₃) ₃]. 4 C₆H₅-CH₃ on rough, non-shiny steel surfaces - even with a current density of 1 to 2 A / dm² - matt, smooth, low-pore aluminum layers. Electrolytes without a significant amount of Al (CH₃) ₃, however, deliver - under the same test conditions - only up to a current density of about 1 A / dm² coatings with comparable layer quality.
The invention will be explained in more detail with the aid of exemplary embodiments. A 3 1-rectangular glass cell (length: 20 cm; width: 10 cm; height: 20 cm) is used for the aluminizing tests, which is provided with a special cover system and a gas lock as well as with a gas transfer pipe, so that it is constantly under one Inert gas atmosphere can be kept; this is necessary because of the air and moisture sensitivity of the organoaluminum electrolytes. The aluminizing cell has two aluminum anodes (99.98% Al), which are arranged on the narrow sides; There is a stirrer in each of the diagonally opposite corners - in front of the anodes. The specimen to be coated, ie the cathode, can be inserted into the center of the cell using a rod - parallel between the two anodes. The cell contains 1.79 kg of an organoaluminum electrolyte in the form of KF. [1.5 Al (C₂H₅) ₃. 0.5 Al (CH₃) ₃]. 4 C₆H₅-CH₃. This electrolyte is brought to a temperature of approx. 100 ° C in a heating bath; it then has a specific electrical conductivity of 23 mS.cm⁻¹. A pulse generator (up to 5 A) is used as the current source for the electroplating tests, with which rectangular pulses from 1 to 1000 Hz with a cathodic / anodic pulse ratio of 2: 1 to 10: 1 can be generated.

A/dm²).A copper step plate was used to investigate the maximum applicable cathodic current density as a function of the deposition frequency; the transition from a bright aluminum deposition to dark to black deposits on edges and surfaces served as the criterion. The test was carried out in such a way that separation frequencies of 10, 40, 80, 100, 160, 200, 500 and 1000 Hz were set in succession and the cathodic current was regulated in such a way that there was a change in the aluminum deposition. It was found that the maximum of the optical appearance is around 100 Hz (current density: approx. 2.5 A / dm²).
