Claims (6)

  1. A braking system for an axle of a railway vehicle, such as a wagon in which the platform frame directly carries the suspension means for the axle in question, or a bogie wagon in which the suspension means for the corresponding axle are carried by the bogie frame,
       in which vehicle each axle carries two axle boxes (4) on which the suspension is supported,
       which system comprises a rotor (11) connected to the axle (3) for rotation, and a mechanism (12) rotationally immobilised compared to the axle (3) and, for this purpose, connected to the frame (1) which carries the suspension for the axle in question, and the mechanism (12) comprises, facing two opposing regions of the rotor (11), two brake shoes (13) provided with brake linings (14) and carried by levers (15, 16) articulated about at least one spindle (17) carried by a supporting member (18), the levers (15, 16) of which are reciprocally operated by at least one jack (19),
       which brake shoes are not directly connected to the axle by a rotating guide, but the mechanism is relatively positioned, in a known manner, in relation to the axle by suspenders (20) for connection to the frame (1), which suspenders comprise substantially vertical connecting rods (21), the head and the foot of which are traversed by horizontal spindles (22, 23) parallel to the longitudinal axis of the railway vehicle in order to allow transverse movement of the mechanism in relation to the rotor so as to compensate for the displacement permitted by the end play of the axle in relation to the frame,
       this system being characterised in that, in order to ensure a relatively constant longitudinal position of the brake shoes in relation to the rotor, in spite of the absence of a direct connection between the brake shoes (13) and the axle by means of a rotating guide, instead of the mechanism (12) simply being connected directly to the frame by suspenders (20):
    - firstly, the said mechanism (12) is connected by its suspenders (20) to an intermediate support (28), itself connected to the said frame (1) by suspension rods (29, 30) which, in a mean position corresponding to the aforesaid situation, are substantially vertical and form, with the frame (1) and the intermediate support (28), a parallelogram (31) deformable in a vertical plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the railway vehicle owing to their means of articulation (32 to 35) about horizontal spindles parallel to the transverse axis of the vehicle, and,
    - secondly, to ensure that the support relatively follows the longitudinal movements of the axle (3) in relation to the frame, the intermediate support (28) is connected by a traction rod (36) to a part (5), which is fixed in relation to the axle box (4), which traction rod (36), in the case of average loading of the frame, is substantially horizontal and is articulated on the intermediate support and on the part (5), which is fixed in relation to the axle box (4), about horizontal spindles (37, 38) parallel to the transverse axis of the vehicle by a joint tolerating a certain swivelling movement in order to allow for the effects of the transverse play between the axle (3) and the frame (1).
  2. A system according to claim 1, characterised in that the intermediate support (28) is provided with a projection (39) towards the ground to a level at least sufficient to carry the articulation spindle (38) of the traction rod (36) at a suitable height.
  3. A system according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the means of articulation of the connecting rods (29, 30) allow slight swivelling play.
  4. A system according to any one of claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the supporting member (18) is also connected to the intermediate support (28) by a means of articulation (33), the axis of which extends transversely to the frame of the wagon.
  5. A system according to any one of claims 1 to 4, characterised in that the means of articulation of the supporting member coincides with one of the means of articulation of the connecting rods.
  6. A system according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the axle box is provided with flanges (5), on each of which is supported the suspension, characterised in that the part (5), which is fixed in relation to the axle box (4), is formed by the flange (5) for supporting the base of one of the suspension springs.
