Description

The present invention relates to a watermarked printable plastic support containing security marks having an effect resembling that of watermarks. These marks are subsequently designated under the term pseudo watermarks.

It is common to watermark sheets of paper. The watermarking of the paper can be done in different ways depending on whether watermarks called "real" or artificial watermarks called "pseudo watermarks" are produced.

It is known that fiduciary and security papers have watermarks which are obtained, during the manufacture of the sheet of paper, by round shapes comprising intaglio and / or relief imprints or by means of watermark rollers comprising drawings. recessed and / or raised associated with a flat table (Fourdrinier machine). One then obtains an image which, when looking at the sheet of paper in transmission, appears either clear, if the watermark roller has a relief design, or shaded, if the watermark roller has a hollow design. The light areas are due to the fact that the sheet thickness and the density of the fibers are smaller than the sheet thickness and the density of the fibers in the areas where the watermark has not been imprinted . On the contrary, the dark areas are due to the fact that the thickness of the sheet and the density of the fibers are greater.

It is also known to produce pseudo watermarks by printing or depositing a composition, generally fatty, which permanently transparentizes the sheet of paper. Transparentization can also be done using a hot-melt material; in patent application EP-203499 this material is a polyethylene.

The realization of a pseudo watermark in a sheet of paper can also be done by opacifying certain zones, thanks to the use of an opacifying agent.
Patent application FR-2 353 676 describes a process using an opacity modifying agent, namely which increases the opacity or, in a variant, which decreases the opacity.

This agent can be an aqueous suspension of a pigment or a filler or a solution of a chemical compound, a colored compound or a dye. This agent is applied during the manufacture of the sheet, on the fibrous web and before its removal from the fabric, so that said agent penetrates into the interstices of the web and causes a change in the opacity of the web to be treated in the selected areas, after drying.

This technique has the disadvantage of requiring special roller devices to apply this agent and preferably using a suction device to penetrate the agent into the interstices of the sheet.

This complex technique gives non-homogeneous pseudo-watermarks, the deposit being made non-uniformly.

US Patent 4,520,063 describes a synthetic resin sheet containing security marks similar to a watermark. Two dyes are applied having different migration rates in the sheet, the migration of the one migrating the fastest being stopped by the crosslinking of a crosslinking agent contained in the sheet or added to the dye. One observes, in reflected light a pattern which has the color of this dye on the surface of the sheet, and in transmitted light a pattern of mixed color is observed.

This method of producing a pseudo watermark in a plastic sheet is delicate because it requires an unobvious selection of dyes having different migration speeds in a given material and it requires a crosslinking operation.

It is sometimes advantageous to use a sheet of synthetic material in place of a sheet of paper, consisting essentially of cellulose fibers, for example for manufacturing documents which have to be kept for a long time or which have to withstand adverse handling conditions. Such documents may be diplomas, the diplomas having to last for at least the entire life of its holder. he can also other documents, particularly of value, such as titles, banknotes, identity cards, passports.

It is important that such documents bear authentication marks, in particular watermarks such as paper documents.

The watermarking techniques described above for paper are difficult to apply to sheets of synthetic material. They are not applicable in particular to sheets based on a thermoplastic film.

An object of the invention is therefore to provide a sheet made in particular of synthetic material which is printable and which includes authentication or security marks which are not very visible and even invisible in reflected light and perfectly visible in transmitted light.

Another object of the invention is to prevent counterfeiters or imitators from reproducing such marks of authenticity.

A third object of the invention is to provide a process for manufacturing such a sheet, this process being rapid and economical.

The Applicant has surprisingly discovered that a sheet made in particular of synthetic material can be pseudo-watermarked by deposition or printing of a composition modifying the opacity at determined locations on a substrate of synthetic material. This composition is then covered with a printable pigmented layer. It is remarkable that the marks obtained are not or hardly visible in reflected light and visible in transmitted light. This process is advantageously simple. Another notable advantage of this method is that it allows the creation of pseudo watermarks of several tones (shades from light to dark, for example shaded); this type of watermark is more difficult to imitate and has more authentication data than a solid watermark.

In addition, the fact that a printable pigmented layer is finally deposited makes the marks produced difficult to access by a counterfeiter.

In the case of paper, the counterfeiters produce false watermarks by depositing a composition modifying the opacity at the places suitably chosen on the surface of a sheet of paper. In the case of the invention, which relates to a synthetic sheet, this method of counterfeiting is not possible. In fact, if the counterfeiter obtains commercially from a sheet of synthetic material coated with a printable layer, for example POLYART® manufactured and sold by the company ARJOBEX, several solutions arise.

First, it can deposit on the surface of such a sheet, a composition modifying the opacity in certain places, in an attempt to reproduce the watermark. But then, the marks thus produced on the surface of the sheet will be clearly visible in reflected light.

Secondly, the counterfeiter could dissolve the printable surface layer of POLYART® using solvent, then deposit a composition modifying the opacity in the desired locations, and then deposit the printable layer again on the surface.

Thirdly, the counterfeiter could obtain a sheet of synthetic material not coated with the printable layer, then deposit a composition modifying the opacity and then deposit a printable surface layer.

However, all these conditions are extremely difficult to assemble and the correct reproduction of the pseudo watermark, especially if it has several tones, is not possible. The method used to secure a plastic sheet according to the invention is therefore particularly well suited to a printable synthetic film.

Thus, the invention aims to provide a flexible synthetic printable support bearing at least one authentication or security mark, said support comprising:
  • a plastic substrate,
  • at least one trademark or printed mark on at least one of the faces of the substrate, the mark being constituted by at least one composition modifying the opacity of the substrate,
  • at least one layer of a printable pigment composition covering the mark, said layer being deposited on the face bearing the mark and optionally on the face of the substrate not bearing mark; the mark being little to not visible in reflected light and perfectly visible in transmitted light.

La marque est mono ou polychrome. The brand is mono or polychrome.

The composition modifying the opacity is a pigmentary and / or colored, and / or fluorescent composition, it can be produced in an aqueous medium, in a non-aqueous solvent medium, or in a mixed water-solvent medium. When this composition is pigmentary, it preferably contains a mineral filler, for example titanium dioxide. It can also contain colored pigments. The list of dyes suitable for the invention is not limited. The composition modifying the opacity comprises at least one mineral filler and / or at least one pigmentary and / or soluble dye and / or at least one fluorescent agent, at least one binder or varnish, optionally at least one dispersant and optionally others additives.

The composition modifying the opacity is advantageously a colored and / or fluorescent ink.

Any basic synthetic substrate can be used to carry out the invention. It is preferable to use a film or a sheet made up of at least one polyolefin, in particular polyethylene or polypropylene. More particularly, the basic synthetic substrate contains essentially polyethylene, is formed by extrusion and is bi-stretched. This film may advantageously have undergone a chemical or Corona discharge treatment on its surface in order to improve its receptivity to the various compositions with which it will be coated.

The printable pigment composition is preferably a composition comprising a preferably mineral filler, at least one dispersant, at least one binder, optionally an insolubilizing agent, optionally an antistatic agent, optionally a pH regulating agent and optionally other additives. These additives can, for example, be anti-foaming agents, viscosity regulating agents, waxes.

Such a pigment composition may, for example, be chosen from those described in British patent GB 2,177,413. Other formulas making it possible to improve the printability may be suitable. Some compositions kill the fluorescence of the undercoat. A person skilled in the art will know how to adapt this composition to the chosen undercoat.

  • hydroxydes d'aluminium
  • sulfoaluminates de calcium (blanc de satin)
  • sulfates de baryum (blanc fixe)
  • talcs

These fillers are in the form of fine powders (average particle size less than 10 micrometers in general). One can also consider the use of plastic pigments (powders of acrylonitrile-vinylidene copolymers, of polystyrene for example).

As other dyes, it is possible to use dyes soluble in an aqueous medium which are usually classified in three categories:
  • basic dyes; these are generally hydrochloric salts of coloring bases (for example fuschine, malachite green); these dyes often have the triphenilmethane or azo type configurations.
  • acid dyes; these are generally alkaline salts, in particular sodium or potassium, of combinations of diazo compounds and sulfonic acid.
  • direct dyes, also called substantives, they are related to acid dyes; they are mainly sodium salts of azo combinations with sulfonic or carboxylic groups.

These various dyes and / or pigments can be combined. It may be necessary to take into account the pH of the printable layer to be deposited finally, to choose these dyes or pigments which could be unstable under certain conditions.

A priori, any fluorescent agent may be suitable, however it is necessary to test this agent because certain agents exhibit fluorescence in a given environment and no fluorescence under other conditions. It may also be important that these agents exhibit good resistance to visible or invisible light, this depends on the use of the finished product. Agents which more particularly exhibit phosphorescence are not excluded.

  • derivatives of disulfonated B-naphthol
  • monoazo derivatives
  • disazo derivatives

and their mixtures if necessary.

We can also use magnetic and metallic pigments, luminescent and infrared products.

A preferred method of producing a sheet according to the invention consists in printing at least once preferably, by photogravure, at least one of the faces of the basic plastic substrate by means of at least one opacity modifying composition. , then to lay on this or these faces, and possibly on the other face, the pigmented layer printable with one of the coating means used in the field of printing or the paper industry.

Other methods for depositing the composition modifying the opacity taken in particular in the techniques of printing or the graphic arts may be suitable, but gravure printing is the method which provides the most regular and uniform deposit.

To make a watermark presenting several tones, the composition modifying the opacity is deposited in one or more installments at places chosen above the first deposit. The same composition or another composition can be used.

Other security elements can be incorporated in the base film and / or in the printable layer and / or in the composition modifying the opacity.

The marks obtained according to the invention form a pseudo watermark which can also be detected with a reading and / or recognition of watermarks. When the marks are fluorescent, they can be detected and observed on the surface of the document using UV light.

L'invention sera mieux comprise à l'aide des exemples suivants, nullement limitatifs mais donnés à titre d'illustration. The invention will be better understood using the following examples, which are in no way limiting but are given by way of illustration.

EXEMPLESEXAMPLES

Dans les exemples suivants, le substrat en matière synthétique de base est un film biétiré composé essentiellement de polyéthylène haute densité commercialisé sous la marque Polyart ® par la société ARJOBEXIn the following examples, the basic plastic substrate is a bi-stretched film composed essentially of high density polyethylene sold under the brand Polyart® by the company ARJOBEX

Exemple 1Example 1

The following composition modifying the opacity is carried out in an aqueous medium:
Figure imgb0001

This opacifying composition is deposited on the plastic film by a laboratory gravure machine so as to print a pattern.

The film thus printed is then coated on both sides with a pigmentable composition which can be printed using an air knife coater; the pigment charge used is a mixture of calcium carbonate powder and calcined kaolin.

The final product has a plain pattern that is not visible in reflected light and visible in transmitted light.

The product produced according to the invention is therefore a flexible support of synthetic, printable material which includes a pseudo watermark allowing it to be authenticated.

Exemple 2Example 2

We return to Example 1; to the opacifying composition an optical brightener is added. The optical brightener is sold under the brand BLANKOPHOR P, by BAYER; 0.24 part by commercial weight is added.

In this case, a pseudo fluorescent watermark is obtained.

Figure imgb0002

A final printable support is produced as in Example 1. A support is obtained which can be authenticated by a pseudo fluorescent watermark.

Exemple 5Example 5

We use Example 1 again, to the opacifying composition a VISCOFIL 4 RL PATE violet dye sold by SANDOZ is added. 0.08 part by commercial weight is added.

On obtient alors un pseudo filigrane coloré.We then obtain a pseudo colored watermark.

Exemple 6Example 6

The opacifying composition of example 1 is used, for which the black dye is replaced by a liquid UNIPERSE GP green dye sold by CIBA GEIGY. 0.32 part by commercial weight is added.

A first motif is deposited using an airbrush. On a part of this motif, the opacifying composition is again deposited by airbrush.

Finalement on dépose une couche pigmentée imprimable comme dans l'exemple 1.Finally, a printable pigmented layer is deposited as in Example 1.

We then obtain a support with a pseudo colored watermark comprising a light part and a darker part; this watermark is therefore in two tones.
