Abstract

By giving the holding part (5) of a writing instrument a curved or angular shape, one obtains, when using the writing instrument, an improved correspondence with the anatomy of the hand and with the movement of the index finger. When using said writing instrument provided with the curved or angular holding part (5), it will be possible to place the gripping part and the point part (7) practically parallel to the index, the holding part curved (5) resting against the side of the hand, thereby supporting and stabilizing the writing.

Description

HOLDER FOR A WRITING ARTICLE OR THE LIKE
DESCRIPTION
Technical field
The present invention relates to a holder for a writing article or the like, such as a holder for a hand-held pencil. By 'writing article or the like" is meant essentially an article for plotting, writing, drawing, painting or the like, in which means are arranged to transfer ink from a receptacle or a supply onto a writing surface. Usually, said means of the writing article are provided in the form of a point-shaped end supporting a ball, a tip, or the like, or the end is brush- shaped.
Background art
It is already known per se to provide a writing article or the like with a straight separate holder or to form the writing article itself with a straight holder-shaped element, a so called fixed holder, the main function of the separate holder and the holder-shaped element being to extend the writing article, thereby supporting and stabilizing the writing process itself. Nowadays, separate holders for pens, so called pen extensions, are not used to any great extent. However, the term 'holder' can be said to comprise both separate and fixed holders.
In a straight writing article 1 as illustrated in
Figure 1, in which a holder portion 2 constitutes an immediate extension of a grip portion 3, the line of action or the equivalent of a tip 4 passes from a lower area substantially limited by the thumb, index and middle finger tips to an upper area substantially limited by the thumb and index finger roots and the intermediate part of the hand. In normal use of the writing article, the line of action of the tip does not pass through the hand itself but deviates from the orientation of the index finger towards the writing surface, i.e. the grip portion is not parallel to the index finger. Description of the invention
In order to better stabilize and support the writing article during handling, the holder portion of the writing article has been given an angled or curved shape such that it will be more comfortably positioned in the hand and thus better adapted to the anatomy of the hand. Further, with this shape of the holder portion it is possible to orient the point, tip or equivalent differently as compared to pens of conventional shape. According to the invention, the orientation of the point of the writing article towards the writing surface will substantially correspond to the orientation of the index finger towards the writing surface, whereby the handling of said writing article will be improved and facilitated.
Description of figures
Figure 1 is a view of an ordinary hand-held pen of known type.
Figure 2 is a view of a curved hand-held pen according to the invention.
Figures 3a-d are detailed views showing the design of the curved pen of Figure 2.
Description of an embodiment
In Figures 2 and 3 there is depicted a possible design of a writing article according to the invention in the form of an essentially rigid pencil having a curved holder portion. The pencil mainly comprises a tip and grip portion 7 and a curved holder portion 5. A lead 6 or the like can be inserted in a hole in the tip and grip portion 7, the lead extending, if desired, along the whole length of the holder. A reservoir containing leads and a feed mechanism may be accommodated in the holder. Alternatively, a brush, ball or the like with or without a fluid or paste supply may be used instead of a lead.
For improved and increased contact between the holding surfaces of the thumb, index and middle fingers and the pen, the tip and grip portion 7 can be made essentially trilateral, see Figure 3D, whereby greater stability is achieved. The curved or angled holder portion 5 can be formed with a substantially rectangular cross section, see Figure 3c , shaped in such a way that, in use, the longer side of the section will contact the side of the index finger or the side of the hand in the area between the thumb and index finger roots. With this shape of the holder, a plane contact and a more even distribution of pressure against the hand are achieved, implying also a lower pressure level in the entire hand. If desired, the contact surface of the holder portion could be given a slightly arched shape in cross section. The curved or angled holder portion makes it possible for the grip portion 7 to be placed in the hand such that said portion will be positioned within the main plane of movement of the index finger, and the action line of the lead, when extended, will be located within an area limited by the hand. In use, the lead will essentially follow the movement of the index finger tip, and the grip portion will be substantially parallel to the index finger.
By making the holder angled or curved, it is possible to better adapt a writing article with holder to the shape of the hand, thus giving it an anatomically correct design. In normal use of a pen according to the invention, the tip and grip portion of the pen will essentially follow the movement of the index finger and will be aligned with the index finger, the angled or curved holder portion resting against and being supported by the side of the hand.
This kind of holder design could also be used for handheld pen-like tools, in which the point-shaped tip portion is arranged to remove material from a surface instead of transferring material to a surface.

Claims

1 A holder for a writing article or the like comprising a grip portion including a tip portion, and a holder portion, characterized in that the holder portion (5) is curved or angled and "that in normal use of the writing article the grip portion (7) is essentially parallel to the index finger.
2 A holder according to claim 1, characterized in that the holder portion (5) is curved or angled to such extent that the holder portion (5) rests against the side of the index finger or against the side of the hand between the thumb and index finger roots.
3 A holder according to claim 1, characterized in that the cross section of the holder portion (5) is substantially rectangular, the broad side being arranged for contact with the side of the index finger or the side of the hand between the thumb and index finger roots.
4 A holder according to claim 1, characterized in that the grip portion (7) is substantially trilateral.
