Description

The invention relates to an oil separator according to the preamble of claim 1.

From DE 37 13 210 A1 a ventilation device with an integrated oil separator for the crankcase of an internal combustion engine is known, which comprises a two-part housing. The upper part and lower part of the housing have projections which mesh like teeth and thus form a labyrinth for separating oil droplets from the crankcase gases. By means of pins arranged on the upper part, which penetrate openings in the lower part and the free ends of which are subsequently thermoformed, the upper and lower parts are permanently connected to one another.

Between the housing and the insert, a first and downstream a second, essentially semicircular delay section for gases are formed, with an oil collection area being arranged downstream of each section.

The object of the present invention is to provide an improved oil separator for the crankcase gases of an internal combustion engine, which offers a simple, inexpensive construction and ensures easy assembly and disassembly.

This object is solved by the features of the main claim. Further features that advantageously shape the invention are specified in the subclaims.

The oil separator according to the invention is characterized by a simple, two-part construction, which allows quick assembly and disassembly with few fasteners. An insert arranged in a trough-shaped housing delimits between the inner wall of the housing and the insert a space which is divided by a wall into two delay lines for the gases flowing from the crankcase through the oil separator. The oil droplets contained in the gases separate along the two delay sections as well as on the wall and a further wall arranged in front of a nozzle for the discharge of the gases and flow together in two oil collection areas. From there they flow back into the crankcase.

The oil separator is independent of location and can be attached to any area of the crankcase and only needs an opening in the crankcase for the gases to escape and a contact surface for assembly. The insert does not require any separate fasteners, but is held in a form-fitting manner by the housing. If the oil separator becomes blocked, it can be easily dismantled and cleaned after loosening the screws passed through the housing.

An embodiment of the invention is explained below with reference to drawings.

The oil separator 2, which is arranged horizontally on a crankcase 1 of an internal combustion engine, not shown, consists of a trough-shaped housing 3 and an insert 5 arranged in the opening 4.
The insert 5 leaves a space 8 between its outer surface 6 and the inner wall 7 of the housing 3. The opening 4 is closed by the insert 5 except for a remaining gap 9. In the space 8, a first delay line 10 and a downstream second delay line 11 are formed by the outer surface 6 and the inner wall 7. The first delay line 10 extends from the gap 9 to a downstream first oil collection area 12, the second delay line 11 from there to a second downstream oil collection area 13. Central above the oil collection area 12 is a wall transverse to the longitudinal extent of the housing 3 14 arranged, which partially separates the delay lines 10, 11 from each other.

Above the oil collection area 13 is a tubular connector 16 at one end 15 of the housing 3 for the removal of the cleaned gases from the crankcase arranged. Centrally above the oil collection area 13, the oil separator 2 has a further wall 17 in the sectional area of the housing 3 and connecting piece 16.

On the housing 3 there is an outwardly facing flange 18 surrounding the opening 4. The flange 18 penetrate four openings 19 which serve to receive screws for fastening the oil separator 2 to the crankcase 1. In the area of the openings 19, bulges 20 pointing inwards are arranged in the housing 3. The underside 21 of the flange 18 has a circumferential recess 22 in the region of the inner wall 7, into which a corresponding projection 23 arranged on the insert 5 engages. The insert 5 is held in a form-fitting manner by indentations 24 in the housing 4, which include the bulges 20.

The oil collection area 12 is formed laterally by boundary walls 25 and in its bottom three openings 26 are arranged for the drainage of the collected oil. A boundary wall 27 adapted to the inner wall 7 forms at the end 15 the oil collecting area 13 which has an opening 26. A circumferential groove 28 for receiving a seal is provided in the underside 18.

When installing the oil separator 2, the insert 5 is first pushed into the opening 4 of the housing 3. The insertion depth of the insert 5 into the housing 3 is limited by the recess 22 and the projection 23. The insert 5 is secured against falling out by a slight pressure between the bulges 20 and the indentations 24. A seal is inserted into the groove 28, which prevents oil from escaping onto the crankcase. The oil separator 2 is then fastened to the crankcase 1 by means of screws and the openings 19.
Housing 3 and insert 5 are lightweight and inexpensive to manufacture from plastic for large series production. With increased mechanical loads, the housing 3 can be produced as an aluminum casting.

During operation of the internal combustion engine, the oil separator 2 is pressurized with vacuum to flush the crankcase via a hose attached to the connector 16. This negative pressure conveys the gases through a hole in the crankcase through the gap 9 to the nozzle 16. The gases enriched with oil droplets cannot get from the gap 9 to the nozzle 16 by the shortest route, but rather along the delay lines 10, 11 led through room 8. The droplets which are deposited along the outer surface 6, the inner wall 7 and on the walls 14, 17 are collected by gravitation in the oil collecting areas 12, 13 and passed back into the crankcase 1 via the openings 26. A large part of the oil droplets is deposited on the wall 14. The rest of the mostly very fine oil droplets is deposited on the wall 17.
