Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a deep-freezing and preservation unit for food products.
  • the need is known and is frequent for first deep-freezing food products of various kinds and later preserving them at a low temperature.
  • Units are also known which are capable of carrying out both functions, avoiding the inconvenient and onerous need of making use of two distinct units.
  • Units of this type are described for example in Italian patent No. 1134074 and in Austrian patent No. 199679 and consists essentially of two compartments, one for deep-freezing and one for preserving, located inside a single cabinet together with the evaporator of a refrigerating circuit and a fan. While the deep-freezing compartment is constantly connected to the evaporator, the preservation compartment can alternatively be connected either to the deep-freezer, and thus to the evaporator, or it may be isolated from it according to the open or closed position of a series of partializing fins placed between the two compartments.
  • the closed fins are not indeed capable of avoiding undesired passages of air which excessively reduce the temperature of the preservation compartment if this is small and the outside temperature is low or they prevent the maintenance of the desired low temperature in the deep-freezing compartment if the preservation compartment is large and the outside temperature is high.
  • the object of the present invention is to accomplish a deep-freezing and preservation unit having two compartments, which allows the temperature in the two compartments to be kept in the best possible manner, avoiding at the same time any problem of a mechanical nature.
  • a deep-freezing and preservation unit having two operating stages, comprising a refrigerating circuit with compressor and evaporator and a cabinet with an internal space divided into a deep-freezing compartment which includes said evaporator and a main fan and a preservation compartment which may alternatively be connected to said deep-freezing compartment or isolatable from it, characterized in that the connection between said compartments is assured by at least two auxiliary fans and there are provided means for taking the temperature and means for thermostatic control suitable for activating said compressor and said fans in relation to the operating stage which has been selected and to the temperature taken in said preservation compartment.
  • the temperature of the preservation compartment is no longer unforeseeably dependent on the tightness of the seal formed by the closed fins, but is rather established in a precise and unchangeable manner (at least until it is adjusted again) by the setting of suitable thermostatic means. It is therefore possible to be certain that the temperature in the preservation compartment is always exactly equal to the desired value, independently of the outside temperature and of that of the deep-freezing compartment. On the other hand, there are obviously no mechanical problems, except for that of selecting the most suitable fans.
  • the deep-freezing and preservation unit illustrated in the drawings comprises a cabinet with insulated walls 1, with which there is associated a refrigerating circuit of a type known and usual in itself, comprising in particular an evaporator 2 (Fig.s 1 and 2) and a compressor 3 (Fig. 4).
  • cabinet 1 has an internal space divided into two adjacent compartments 4 and 5, of which the first is used for deep-freezing the products and the second for preserving the products which have already been deep-frozen.
  • the deep-freezing compartment 4 contains in its upper part the evaporator 2 and, to one side of the latter, a main fan 6 capable of determining a circulation of air in the direction indicated by arrows A in Fig.s 1 and 2.
  • the preservation compartment 5 which may be accomplished in one or more modular elements adjacent one to the others (two in the example illustrated in Fig.s 1 and 2), is in turn divided into an upper part and a lower part separated by an intermediate shelf 9, in each of said parts there being housed two racks 10 for trays or other containers for the deep-frozen products to be preserved.
  • a fan 11 is placed between the two parts of preservation compartment 5 so as to create, when so desired, a circulation of air in the direction indicated by arrows B in Fig. 1.
  • the two compartments 4 and 5 are separated by a vertical wall 12 only interrupted by holes 13 and 14, one opposite the lower part and one opposite the upper part of compartment 5, in which there are housed respective fans 15 and 16 which, when in operation, withdraw and reintroduce air, respectively, in deep-freezing compartment 4, causing a circulation of air in preservation compartment 5 in the direction indicated by arrows C in Fig.s 1 and 2.
  • Two deflectors 17 and 18 protect fans 15 and 16, and thus preservation compartment 5, against the circulation of very cold air produced by main fan 6, while a further deflector 19 prevents air delivered by fan 16 from reaching evaporator 2 directly, thus delaying the formation of frost on the evaporator.
  • a control panel of the type shown and indicated with 22 in Fig. 3 comprising in particular a plurality of pilot lights 23-28 for the indication of the unit's different operating stages, a display 29 giving the deep-freezing time, a push-button 30 for resetting the deep-freezing time, a display 31 giving the deep-freezing temperature, a display 32 giving the preservation temperature, an acoustical siren 33 for signalling the end of the deep-freezing stage, a temperature alarm signal unit 34, a switch 35 for activating the acoustical siren signalling the end of deep-freezing or the automatic passage from deep-freezing to preservation, a forced ventilation switch 36 with its pilot light 37, a switch 38 for interrutping the ventilation with its pilot light 39 and a general switch 40 with its pilot light 41.
  • the unit lastly comprises a control system of the thermostatic type which is shown in the form of a block diagram in Fig. 4 and which comprises as its fundamental component a twin remote controlled thermostat 42 which receives the temperature signals from probes 20 and 21 and the time signal from a timer 43 which may be reset by means of push-button 30 on panel 22 of Fig. 3, as well as the signals issued by the different switches of the same panel 22, and which sends out activation signals for compressor 3, fans 6, 11, 15 and 16 and for the different displays and pilot lights of panel 22.
  • a control system of the thermostatic type which is shown in the form of a block diagram in Fig. 4 and which comprises as its fundamental component a twin remote controlled thermostat 42 which receives the temperature signals from probes 20 and 21 and the time signal from a timer 43 which may be reset by means of push-button 30 on panel 22 of Fig. 3, as well as the signals issued by the different switches of the same panel 22, and which sends out activation signals for compressor 3, fans 6, 11, 15 and 16 and for the different displays and pilot lights of
  • the remote controlled thermostat 42 keeps compressor 3 and main fan 6 constantly in operation.
  • deflectors 17 and 18 prevent the flow of cold air A caused by fan 6 with the assistance of evaporator 2 from affecting preservation compartment 5.
  • Fan 11, in turn, is always running to prevent with the flow of air B the formation of layers of air in preservation compartment 5.
  • Probe 20 together with the remote controlled thermostat 42 operates so that the temperature in preservation compartment 5 remains always at the set value, by operating whenever necessary fans 15 and 16, which temporarily connect preservation compartment 5 to deep-freezing compartment 4, creating a momentary circulation of air C.
  • the deep-freezing stage ends when probe 21, inserted into the heart of the product being deep-frozen, signals to remote controlled thermostat 42 that the desired deep-freeze temperature has been attained. At this point, if operated by push-button 35, the acoustical siren 35 warns the operator that the deep-freezing operation is over. In turn, pilot light 25 will come on to give the same signal. Passage to the preservation stage shall then be carried out manually. As an alternative to the acoustical and optical signals it shall be possible to have an automatic passage from the deep-freezing to the preservation stage (still by means of the twin remote controlled thermostat 42, having earlier inserted this function with push-button 35).
  • passage to the preservation stage may still be controlled automatically by timer 43, suitably set at the beginning of the operation.
  • the object of the preservation stage is to maintain the entire internal space of cabinet 1 at a temperature (say -20°C) sufficient for the preservation of the deep-frozen product.
  • probe 20 together with the remote controlled thermostat 42 normally keeps compressor 3 and main fan 6 in operation together with auxiliary fans 15 and 16. In this way the two compartments 4 and 5 are to all intents and purposes connected together, thus ensuring throughout the space the desired temperature.
  • remote controlled thermostat 42 stops the compressor and the three fans and then starts them again as soon as the temperature taken by probe 20 departs from the preset value.
