Definitions
- Offset printing plates generally consist of a layer support on which a radiation-sensitive reproduction layer is applied, with the aid of which an image is photomechanically generated from a template. After the printing form has been produced, the layer support carries the color-bearing image areas during later printing and at the same time forms the water-bearing image background in the non-image areas (non-image areas).
- an aqueous dampening solution is generally applied to the plate surface during the printing process.
- the dampening solution is applied to the plate by one or more rollers.
- At least one ink roller which is covered with an oil-based ink, contacts the entire surface of the plate, but only colors the hydrophobic image areas because of the oil-repellent properties of the non-image areas.
- the dampening solution and at least part of the oil-based ink can be applied to the plate simultaneously with a roller.
- Agents such as gum arabic, glycerol and the like for hydrophilization have long been known, which usually contain additions of phosphates, citrates or corresponding acids, which act as buffers and set the pH range of 4.5 and 6, which is particularly favorable for offset printing.
- the natural product gum arabic fluctuates in quality and, as a component in dampening solutions, leads to excessive emulsification of the printing ink, which results in uneven coloring of the printing plate.
- EP-A-0091601 describes a dampening solution which contains water-miscible or water-soluble polymers instead of the isopropanol also used, cellulose ethers, polyacrylamides, polyvinyl alcohols or chemically modified rubber products being used in particular.
- US-A-4186250 describes mixtures of polyacrylamides with polycarboxylic acids or their alkali metal salts. Such solutions have the same shortcomings as have already been described for the polymers.
- US-A-4374036 describes a dampening solution which contains polyphosphates, water-soluble polyethylene glycols, carboxymethyl cellulose, nonionic or anionic surfactants of the alkyl orthophosphate and alkyl polyphosphate type and a polysiloxane.
- a disadvantage is the inadequate hydrolysis stability of polyphosphates, so that work must be carried out in the neutral range, although in practice pH values around 5 have proven to be better.
- Moisturizing solutions for offset printing which contain aminomethylenephosphonic acid and / or their derivatives, have already been proposed.
- the present invention relates to an aqueous dampening solution for the offset printing process, which is characterized in that the solution is a hydrolyzate of a compound of the general formula (I) wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different from each other and represent hydrogen, an alkyl radical with 1 to 9 carbon atoms or an aryl radical with 6 to 12 carbon atoms, or contains condensates of this hydrolyzate.
- R1 and R2 are the same or different from each other and represent hydrogen, an alkyl radical with 1 to 9 carbon atoms or an aryl radical with 6 to 12 carbon atoms, or contains condensates of this hydrolyzate.
- the compounds of the general formula (I) can also be present, at least in part, in the form of their salts, and additionally contain a buffer system, a biocide, a corrosion inhibitor, glycol and / or alcohol.
- the dampening solution can be in the form of a concentrate, which may contain 0.01 to 100 g / l of the compound of the general formula (I).
- the pH of the dampening solution is expediently in the range between 3.0 and 7.0, preferably between 4.0 and 5.5.
- the hydrophilization of the non-image areas of the printing plate is renewed during the offset printing process, whereby toning is prevented until the end of the printing process.
- a particular advantage of the moistening solution according to the invention is that disturbances caused by hard water or cations which have been introduced are prevented.
- Another important advantage of the dampening solution according to the invention is that the compound of the general formula (I), in particular [2- (trihydroxysilyl) ethyl] phosphonic acid and its salts, are easily accessible from inexpensive raw materials and can be prepared in a constant quality and also in higher concentrations can be used.
- Silanes of the general formula (I), e.g. [2- (trialkoxysilyl) ethyl] phosphonic acid dimethyl ester or [2- (trialkoxysilyl) ethyl] phosphonic acid diethyl ester such as e.g. the [2- (trimethoxysilyl) ethyl] phosphonic acid dimethyl ester or diethyl ester can be prepared in a conventional manner, e.g. as described in US-PS 3780127 and US-PS 3816550, in conc. Hydrochloric acid can be hydrolyzed. After removing excess hydrochloric acid, the product obtained in this way can be diluted with water.
- condensates can also form during hydrolysis.
- hydrolyzates and condensates as well as mixtures of hydrolyzates and condensates of the compounds of general formula (I) can be used according to the invention for the dampening solution, as long as it is ensured that the hydrolyzates or their condensates are completely dissolved or homogeneous in aqueous or alcoholic / aqueous solution are distributed.
- Suitable salts of the hydrolysates are their alkali and alkaline earth salts, in particular their Na+, K+ and NH4+ salts.
- the hydrolyzates and / or their condensates or their salts are generally present in the dampening solution according to the invention in amounts of 0.01 to 10, preferably 0.1 to 2% by weight, based on the total amount of the dampening solution.
- the pH of the dampening solution is expediently adjusted to a pH between 3 and 7, preferably between 4 and 5.5.
- the dampening solution according to the invention can also be stored in the form of a concentrate which contains up to 100 g / l of hydrolyzate of a compound of the general formula (I), its condensate or salts, and, if appropriate, the additives mentioned above.
- dampening solution according to the invention it is possible to maintain the hydrophilicity and thus the water-carrying properties of the non-image areas during the printing process, without sticky deposits and disturbances caused thereby, for example when using high-molecular compounds.
- An electrolytically roughened and anodized aluminum plate is immersed in the dampening solution to be tested and then dried.
- the entire plate is then printed with offset ink in a sample printing device. After the ink has dried somewhat, the plate is again placed in the dampening solution and the time taken for the printing ink to detach from the plate. The faster this happens, the better the humectant works.
- Example 2 The experiment described in Example 2 was repeated with the change that this time no [2- (trihydroxysilyl) ethyl] phosphonic acid was added to the solution. The color only came off the plate after several hours.

Description
The invention relates to an aqueous dampening solution for preventing the color acceptance of non-image areas during the offset printing process and for substantially reducing interference from foreign ions. Offset printing plates generally consist of a layer support on which a radiation-sensitive reproduction layer is applied, with the aid of which an image is photomechanically generated from a template. After the printing form has been produced, the layer support carries the color-bearing image areas during later printing and at the same time forms the water-bearing image background in the non-image areas (non-image areas).
It is therefore required of a layer support which is to be suitable for light-sensitive material for producing a printing plate, on the one hand that the printing image areas developed from the copying layer of the material adhere very firmly to it, and on the other hand that it represents a hydrophilic background and its repellent effect compared to oleophilic printing inks under the requirements of the printing process.
In addition to the printing ink, an aqueous dampening solution is generally applied to the plate surface during the printing process.
Their task is to keep all parts not covered by the hydrophobic image moist, in order to ensure that these non-image areas repel hydrophobic ink during the printing process. In conventional systems, the dampening solution is applied to the plate by one or more rollers. At least one ink roller, which is covered with an oil-based ink, contacts the entire surface of the plate, but only colors the hydrophobic image areas because of the oil-repellent properties of the non-image areas.
Alternatively, the dampening solution and at least part of the oil-based ink can be applied to the plate simultaneously with a roller.
In the simplest case, water is used as the dampening solution. In many cases, however, this does not meet the high demands of offset printing and there are often disturbances in the sense of color acceptance at non-image areas.
Agents such as gum arabic, glycerol and the like for hydrophilization have long been known, which usually contain additions of phosphates, citrates or corresponding acids, which act as buffers and set the pH range of 4.5 and 6, which is particularly favorable for offset printing.
The natural product gum arabic fluctuates in quality and, as a component in dampening solutions, leads to excessive emulsification of the printing ink, which results in uneven coloring of the printing plate.
Substitutes for gum arabic are known in the literature. DE-A-2625604 (corresponding to US-A-4116896) describes a dampening solution which firstly contains polyvalent metal ions, secondly at least about 97% by weight of solvent, the solvent consisting of at least one monovalent or polyvalent low-alkyl alcohol or glycol ether having a molecular weight of about 170 or less and at least about 75% by volume of water, and thirdly containing 0.001 to 0.5% by weight of a selected active polymer component.
A disadvantage of using polymers is that drying on leads to sticking or soiling of the printing press. In DE-B-1121632 (corresponding to US-A-3108535) an aqueous dampening and cleaning agent for the offset printing process is proposed which contains polyvinylphosphonic acid, vinylphosphonic acid or mixtures of the components with glycerol, optionally with the addition of substances known for dampening solutions, such as ammonium phosphate , Citrates, carboxymethyl cellulose and others contains.
The disadvantage of such solutions is on the one hand an unpleasant smell, on the other hand an expensive manufacturing procedure. EP-A-0091601 describes a dampening solution which contains water-miscible or water-soluble polymers instead of the isopropanol also used, cellulose ethers, polyacrylamides, polyvinyl alcohols or chemically modified rubber products being used in particular. US-A-4186250 describes mixtures of polyacrylamides with polycarboxylic acids or their alkali metal salts. Such solutions have the same shortcomings as have already been described for the polymers.
In der US-A-4374036 wird eine Befeuchtungslösung beschrieben, die Polyphosphate, wasserlösliche Polyethylenglykole, Carboxymethylcellulose, nichtionische oder anionische Tenside vom Typ Alkylorthophosphat und Alkylpolyphosphat sowie ein Polysiloxan enthalten.US-A-4374036 describes a dampening solution which contains polyphosphates, water-soluble polyethylene glycols, carboxymethyl cellulose, nonionic or anionic surfactants of the alkyl orthophosphate and alkyl polyphosphate type and a polysiloxane.
A disadvantage is the inadequate hydrolysis stability of polyphosphates, so that work must be carried out in the neutral range, although in practice pH values around 5 have proven to be better.
Moisturizing solutions for offset printing, which contain aminomethylenephosphonic acid and / or their derivatives, have already been proposed.
It is therefore the task to develop a dampening solution for offset printing, which prevents toning during the printing process and disturbances caused by introduced cations, has a corrosion-inhibiting effect, can be used in pH ranges which are optimal for the printing process, which are easy to manufacture and is composed inexpensively.
This problem is solved by a dampening solution, the [2- (trihydroxysilyl) ethyl] -phosphonic acid or its derivatives, e.g. contains their salts or condensates.
The present invention relates to an aqueous dampening solution for the offset printing process, which is characterized in that the solution is a hydrolyzate of a compound of the general formula (I)
wherein R¹ and R² are the same or different from each other and represent hydrogen, an alkyl radical with 1 to 9 carbon atoms or an aryl radical with 6 to 12 carbon atoms, or contains condensates of this hydrolyzate.
Preference is given to moistening solutions which contain a hydrolyzate of a compound of the general formula (I) in which R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen.
The compounds of the general formula (I) can also be present, at least in part, in the form of their salts, and additionally contain a buffer system, a biocide, a corrosion inhibitor, glycol and / or alcohol.
The dampening solution can be in the form of a concentrate, which may contain 0.01 to 100 g / l of the compound of the general formula (I).
The pH of the dampening solution is expediently in the range between 3.0 and 7.0, preferably between 4.0 and 5.5.
By using the dampening solution according to the invention, the hydrophilization of the non-image areas of the printing plate is renewed during the offset printing process, whereby toning is prevented until the end of the printing process. A particular advantage of the moistening solution according to the invention is that disturbances caused by hard water or cations which have been introduced are prevented. Another important advantage of the dampening solution according to the invention is that the compound of the general formula (I), in particular [2- (trihydroxysilyl) ethyl] phosphonic acid and its salts, are easily accessible from inexpensive raw materials and can be prepared in a constant quality and also in higher concentrations can be used.
US-PS 3816550 beschrieben, in konz. Silanes of the general formula (I), e.g. To a certain extent, condensates can also form during hydrolysis. Both hydrolyzates and condensates as well as mixtures of hydrolyzates and condensates of the compounds of general formula (I) can be used according to the invention for the dampening solution, as long as it is ensured that the hydrolyzates or their condensates are completely dissolved or homogeneous in aqueous or alcoholic / aqueous solution are distributed.
Als Salze der Hydrolysate kommen deren Alkali- und Erdalkalisalze, insbesondere deren Na⁺-, K⁺- und NH₄⁺-Salze in Frage.Suitable salts of the hydrolysates are their alkali and alkaline earth salts, in particular their Na⁺, K⁺ and NH₄⁺ salts.
The hydrolyzates and / or their condensates or their salts are generally present in the dampening solution according to the invention in amounts of 0.01 to 10, preferably 0.1 to 2% by weight, based on the total amount of the dampening solution.
The pH of the dampening solution is expediently adjusted to a pH between 3 and 7, preferably between 4 and 5.5.
To achieve special effects, it can also be advantageous to add further substances, such as a buffer system, biocides, wetting agents, defoamers, corrosion inhibitors, thickeners, alcohols and / or glycols, to the dampening solution in a known manner.
The dampening solution according to the invention can also be stored in the form of a concentrate which contains up to 100 g / l of hydrolyzate of a compound of the general formula (I), its condensate or salts, and, if appropriate, the additives mentioned above.
With the dampening solution according to the invention, it is possible to maintain the hydrophilicity and thus the water-carrying properties of the non-image areas during the printing process, without sticky deposits and disturbances caused thereby, for example when using high-molecular compounds.
The following examples serve to further illustrate the invention.
The parts and percentages given in the examples relate to the weight, unless stated otherwise.
An electrolytically roughened and anodized aluminum plate is immersed in the dampening solution to be tested and then dried. The entire plate is then printed with offset ink in a sample printing device. After the ink has dried somewhat, the plate is again placed in the dampening solution and the time taken for the printing ink to detach from the plate. The faster this happens, the better the humectant works.
An electrolytically roughened and anodized aluminum plate was immersed in an aqueous solution, the pH of which was adjusted to 5.0 by means of Na₃PO₄ and which contained 0.5% [2- (trihydroxysilyl) ethyl] phosphonic acid. The test was then carried out as described above for effectiveness. The paint quickly came off the plate in the dampening solution.
An electrolytically roughened and anodized aluminum plate was printed with offset ink without further treatment. After the paint had dried slightly, the plate was placed in distilled water. The color did not come off even after several hours.
An electrolytically roughened and anodized aluminum plate was immersed in a solution containing 0.5% glycerol and 0.5% [2- (trihydroxysilyl) ethyl] phosphonic acid. After the further processing described above, it was found that the paint peels off very quickly. When printing on a commercially available offset printing machine, correspondingly advantageous results are obtained, i.e. faster free-running of the plate when the printing machine starts and significantly reduced waste.
The experiment described in Example 2 was repeated with the change that this time no [2- (trihydroxysilyl) ethyl] phosphonic acid was added to the solution. The color only came off the plate after several hours.
