Abstract

The handle (6) is locked in the inactive position by a spring-tensioned (19) plunger (9) carrying a striking pin (15). When the handle (6) is grasped after removing the locking pin (9), the weight of the container (1) causes the handle (6) to pivot in the working position. As it pivots, an operating member (13) on this handle acts on the plunger (14) and causes the cartridge (17) containing the compressed inert gas to be opened, which then expands into the container (1). As the handle (6) reaches the end of its stroke, the operating member (13) ceases to act on the plunger (14), which returns to its initial position under the action of its spring (19). The handle (6) is then immobilised by this plunger. To release it, it is a simple matter, after removing the cover, to extract the cartridge (17) and engage a spanner (30) with a thread (20) on the plunger (14) and pull to free the handle which is then able to return to the inactive position. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a fire extinguisher comprising a container intended to contain an extinguishing product, liquid or pulverulent, and a stopper fixing to screw on this receptacle, for closing it, this stopper comprising a lockable operating member, provided for actuating a means for opening an inert gas cartridge under pressure, removably attached to said screw cap, to be in the container and cause the extinguishant to exit the extinguisher, when said inert gas passes from the cartridge into the container.

A known fire extinguisher of this type is described in the certificate of addition FR-A-2 502 963, which comprises a handle which, after having been unlocked as is generally the case with fire extinguishers, requires, after that one transported the device, holding it by its handle, near the fire, an actuation operation of the same handle, to produce the working condition of the fire extinguisher, by puncturing a seal to put the container under pressure.

The present invention makes it possible to eliminate this maneuver from the handle which, under real fire conditions, can cause a loss of precious time, or even forget this maneuver and the uselessness of the extinguisher. The solution consists in using the self-weight of the apparatus to produce, by an automatic displacement of the handle, the setting in working condition, of the simple fact of seizing and transporting by hand the extinguisher held by its handle.

The fire extinguisher according to the invention is in accordance with the claim.

The accompanying drawing shows by way of example an embodiment of the extinguisher according to the invention.

Figure 1 is a section along 1-1 of Figure 3, showing the bodies in the rest position, the fire extinguisher then being ready for use.

Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the organs in the position they occupy when the handle, which was in the inactive position in Figure 1, has passed into the working position.

Figure 3 is a plan view corresponding to Figure 1, the container body being omitted.

Figure 4 est une vue de détail en coupe selon 4-4 de figure 1.Figure 4 is a detail view in section along 4-4 of Figure 1.

Figure 5 est une vue en coupe à plus grande échelle, selon 5-5 de figure 3.Figure 5 is a sectional view on a larger scale, according to 5-5 of Figure 3.

The fire extinguisher shown comprises a container 1 intended to contain a non-illustrated extinguishing product, liquid or powdery, and a plug formed by a body 2 and a screw ring 3 which is fixed to a thread 4 of the container 1 to seal the container 1 by means of an O-ring 5, interposed between the container 1 and the body 2 of the plug. A handle 6 which, when the container 1 is arranged vertically as shown in the drawing is approximately horizontal, is mounted to rotate around a pivot 7 passing through two arms 8, belonging to the body 2. A safety pin 9 provided with a ring 10 passes through the part of the handle 6 adjacent to the pivot 7, as well as the two arms 8 of the body 2. The ring 10 is used to easily detach the pin which can, moreover, be provided with a plummet thanks to a hole 11 which it presents.

We see in Figure 4 that the part of the handle 6 cooperating with the pivot 7 has two parts 12 forming a sort of fork between the arms of which are the arms 8 of the body 2. Between these two fork arms 12 is a middle arm 13 whose function will be explained below.

3 et 5).A piston 14 is mounted to slide in a bore of the body 2 of the plug. This piston is integral with a metal tip 15 forming a striker, intended to pierce a metal membrane 16 hermetically closing a cartridge 17 containing an inert gas under pressure, nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The cartridge 17 is screwed into a nozzle 18 itself screwed into a thread of the body 2. A compression spring 19, bearing on the nozzle 18, biases the piston 14 upwards in FIG. 1. At its lower part in the drawing, at 20, the piston 14 has a thread, the reason for which will be explained below. At 21, we see a tube integral with its upper end of the body 2 and whose lower end, not visible in the drawing, opens into the container 1. A pipe 22 is screwed by one of its ends into the body 2. C It is through this hose that the extinguishing product leaves when the extinguisher is operating. The end of this pipe, visible in the drawing, opens opposite the upper end fixed in the body 2 of a tube 28 plunging into the container until close to its bottom. A channel 27 connects the chamber in which the piston 14 moves with the upper end of the tube 21 (fig. 3 and 5).

The handle 6 has a notch at 23, while the body 2 has a similar notch at 24. An elastic plate, made of plastic for example, 25, is engaged by two opposite edges in the notches 23 and 24 when the members are located in the position shown in Figure 1. It may be, for example, a red colored plate indicating by its presence that the extinguisher is ready for use.

The operation of the fire extinguisher shown is as follows.

When using the extinguisher, we start by removing the safety pin 9 by exerting a pull on its ring 10, so that the handle 6 is no longer locked in the position shown in Figure 1. This done, we grips handle 6 to lift and transport the fire extinguisher to where it is used. As soon as you do that of the fire extinguisher causes the handle to turn clockwise in Figure 1, to come into the more or less vertical position shown in Figure 2. During this movement, part 13 of this handle acts on the upper end of the piston 14 to force the latter to move downwards, against the action of the spring 19. When the handle is in the immediate vicinity of the position according to FIG. 2, the part 13 ceases to cooperate with the piston 14 and the latter can return practically to its initial position, its stroke being limited by the contact of 13 and of the bottom 26 of a cut in the upper end of this piston. During the downward movement of the piston, the striker needle 15 is lowered into the position shown in phantom in Figure 2 and, therefore, has perforated the membrane 16 which closed the cartridge 17. From this moment, the gas under pressure in the cartridge flows into the container through the channel 27 and the tube 21. Therefore, a handle, not shown, disposed on the pipe 22, allows to project the extinguishing agent on the fire. The handle 6 arriving in the working position according to FIG. 2 cannot be returned to the position according to FIG. 1 without the maneuvers which will be described. The position of this almost vertical lever already shows that the device is no longer in the use position. In addition, the part 25 was ejected during the movement of the lever, from the position in FIG. 1 to the position in FIG. 2. It can therefore be seen that the apparatus has been manipulated and is probably no longer capable of extinction.

It is when the container 1 is again filled that the handle 6 can be brought back to the position according to FIG. 1. To do this, the cartridge 17 is unscrewed and introduced into its place in the tip 18 the internally threaded end 29 of a wrench 30. This threaded part 29 is screwed onto the threaded part 20 of the piston 14 and exerts traction on this piston, in the direction of the bottom in the drawing, so that the piston releases part 13 of the handle 6 and allows the return of the latter in position according to FIG. 1. Of course, this operation cannot take place that after unscrewing the cover by turning the threaded ring 3. For safety, this ring has protrusions 31 four in number, of which only three are visible in Figure 3. A special key allows, by cooperation with these protrusions 31, to maneuver the ring 3. When the handle has returned to position according to FIG. 1, it only remains to put the safety pin 9 in place and to seal it and replace a new piece of signaling 25, so that the duly filled device is ready to operate again, a new cartridge 17 having obviously been put in place.

The fire extinguisher described has the advantage of not requiring any particular maneuver to ensure that it is put into working condition (perforation of the seal 16 and pressurization of the interior of the container 1) when necessary. In fact, in the event of a fire, it suffices to take the extinguisher by its handle (after having unlocked it) to transport it, to the place of the fire, by its handle held in the hand, so that automatically, under the effect of its own weight, so without special operation, the extinguisher is in working condition. This is very important because during a fire, the extinguisher is seized and transported to the place of the fire, by a person who is not familiar with the use of extinguishers and who, therefore, when s 'is a known type of device, may lose precious time looking, once close to the fire, what still needs to be done to make the device operational.

Claims (1)

  1. A fire extinguisher comprising a container (1) designed for containing an extinguishing product and a cap (2, 3) fastened on the upper part of this container by threaded engagement to obturate the same, this cap comprising a lockable operating member (6) designed for operating a spring (19) plunger (14) carrying a striking pin (15) for opening a cartridge (17) of a pressurized inert gas fastened in a detachable manner onto said threaded cap, to enter the container and provoke the release of the extinguishing product out of the fire extinguisher when said inert gas passes from the cartridge into the container, the operating member being a handle (6) capable of pivoting with respect to the cap (2, 3) between an inactive position and a working position, characterized in that the inactive position (fig. 1) of said handle (6) is its lower position when the fire extinguisher is in the vertical position with the container (1) downwards, whereas its active position (fig. 2) is then its upper position, such that, when said handle (6) is grasped in the inactive and previously unlocked position while the fire extinguisher is in the normal vertical position with the handle (6) above the container (1) to lift and move the fire extinguisher, the weight of the latter forces this handle to come into its upper operating position (fig. 2), in that said plunger (14) with a striking pin (15) is under the effect of its spring (19) in the rest position as long as the handle itself is in the inactive position, this handle (6) having an actuator part (13) acting upon this plunger (14) to bring it into the active opening position of the cartridge, when this handle rotates to its upper working position under the effect of the weight of the fire extinguisher, this actuator part (13) stopping its action on this plunger when the handle reaches the end of its working stroke, thus enabling this plunger (14) with the striking pin (15) to return under the effect of its spring (19) to its rest position in which it then immobilizes the handle.
