Abstract

A swivel chair has a leg with a support at the upper end of its upright column and two shells which are articulately connected to each other and at least one of which is articulately connected directly to the support. The one shell carries a cushion and forms therewith the seat of the chair. The other shell is assembled of two sections which are pivotable relative to each other about a horizontal axis, one of which supports the lumbar region of the body of the occupant of the chair and the other of which serves as a shoulder support. The one section is articulately connected to the rear portion of the one shell by two hinges.

Description

The invention relates to a chair, in particular an office swivel chair with an adjustable seat and an adjustable backrest connected in an articulated manner thereto, the seat and the backrest having a seat shell or a back shell provided with upholstery, and a foot having a standpipe and a support . Such a chair is known from GB-A-2143730.

Such a known office chair has a support structure with a support frame between the support and the seat or the seat shell, this support frame being able to transmit the forces occurring in a person sitting on the chair from the seat shell or the back shell to the support. This substructure leads to a comparatively large construction volume and also requires a corresponding manufacturing and assembly effort.
The narrowest possible side silhouette is often desired in such chairs. At the same time, however, it should also be possible to adjust the seat and the backrest in multiple ways by means of an appropriate adjustment mechanism. However, this cannot be achieved to the desired extent in the known construction.

The object of the present invention is to provide an office chair of the type mentioned at the outset, its construction and manufacturing is simplified, but at the same time, while maintaining the usual adjustability, an overall low overall height or thickness is possible both in the seating area and in the backrest area.

To achieve this object, it is proposed according to the invention that the bitzschale and the back shell are connected to one another by a joint which in the separating area has joint parts which act directly on the shells and are formed by molding on the mutually facing end faces of the shells, and that the seat shell and the back shell are designed as self-supporting support parts directly connected to the support.
As a result, the structural thickness in the area of the seat, under which the adjustment mechanism is also located, can be considerably reduced, since the complex supporting substructure with a frame can be omitted by taking over the supporting function through the seat shell itself.

An otherwise usual back support protruding from the back can be avoided, so that the desired, narrow side silhouette can continue from the seating area into the backrest area. This also enables a simpler structure for the backrest.

Advantageously, the like with the standpipe. connected support a seat support part connected to the seat shell via a swivel joint and a rigid part or the like, in particular rigidly connected to the back shell. as well as a back support part connected to the seat support part via a rotary / sliding bearing. With this arrangement, the seat can be adjusted around the swivel joint, with the backrest also changing the angle at the same time between seat and backrest, this movement follows.

One embodiment provides that the back shell is formed in two parts with a pelvic or lumbar part, which preferably extends approximately over the width of the seat, and a shoulder part, the two back shell parts being pivotable relative to one another from a stop position against spring support. The pelvic or lumbar part at least partially takes on the function of an otherwise required back support. The subdivision of the back shell allows an exact adjustment to the respective sitting position of a person using the chair.
A further development of the invention provides that the seat support part of the support has a spring for resetting the seat, preferably a torsion spring, at the swivel joint at its front end. Such torsion suspension can be accommodated in a space-saving manner, so that this construction also contributes to a low overall height in the seating area.
It is particularly advantageous if one or more return springs supporting the seat return spring, preferably pressure springs engaging on the underside, are provided between the seat shell and the back shell or the lumbar part. The torsion springs and the return springs together ensure that the seat and the backrest come to an upper or front position when the seat mechanism is released and the seat is relieved. Due to the division into two spring groups, the respective springs can be made comparatively small, so that this in turn also contributes to a low overall height.

Additional refinements of the invention are listed in the further subclaims. The invention with its essential details is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing.

A chair 1 (FIG. 1) is designed as an office swivel chair and essentially has a base 2, a support 4 fastened to its stand tube 3, a seat 5 and a backrest 6.
The seat 5 and the backrest 6 are provided with a removable padding 7, under which there is a seat shell 8 or a back shell 9, as can be clearly seen in FIG. 3.
According to the invention, it is now provided that the seat shell and preferably also the back shell are designed as carrier parts directly connected to the support 4. They therefore also take on the function of a supporting substructure, so that such is not necessary in the chair according to the invention. The shells are arched to achieve the required strength and have bead-like stiffening formations 10 in their outer edge areas and also in the area of the intermediate surfaces. The stiffening formations are preferably molded on the inside, facing the padding 7, so that the shells can be smooth on the outside without disruptive projections.

The seat shell 8 and the back shell 9 are connected to one another in their separating region 11 via joints 12. For this purpose, formations 13 are provided on the shells 8, 9 at the mutually facing end faces to form approximately flange-shaped joint parts. Insert pins 14 inserted from the side form the hinge axes.
FIGS. 2 and 4 also clearly show that the shells are designed to interlock with one another at their facing ends, so that there is practically no intermediate gap in the separating region 11.
The support 4 has a seat support part 16 which is connected to the seat shell via a swivel joint 15 and which on the other hand is connected to the standpipe 3. Furthermore, the support has a back support part 18, which is in particular rigidly connected to the back shell 9 and is connected to the other support part 16 at its end facing away from the back shell via a rotary / sliding bearing 17. 2 and 4 it is indicated that this rotary / sliding bearing essentially has a sliding slot 19 in the seat support part 16 and a cross bolt 20 extending through this slot in the back support part 18. This arrangement ensures, in a manner known per se, that the seat moves somewhat in the same direction with this movement when the backrest is adjusted. The further adjustment and locking mechanism is not shown in the drawings for the sake of simplicity.
The seat support part 16 of the support 4 has a torsion suspension 21 at its front end at the swivel joint 15 for returning the seat to an upper position. This torsion suspension 21 adjusts the seat 5 about the swivel joint 15 in the direction of arrow Pf 1 (FIG. 1) when the adjustment mechanism is unlocked. By connecting the back support part 18 via the rotary / sliding bearing 17, the backrest 6 is also pivoted in the direction of the arrow Pf 2.

Fig. 4 clearly shows that between the seat shell 8 and the back shell 9, the above-mentioned seat return movement supporting return springs 22 are provided. These are attached on the underside and designed as compression springs. They lie within a support cladding, which is omitted in FIG. 4.
As already mentioned, the return springs 22 act in the same direction as the torsion spring 21. This division into several spring groups allows the individual springs to be kept very small, so that they can also be accommodated well within a flat support and adjustment mechanism.

In the exemplary embodiment, the backrest 6 is formed in two parts with a pelvic or lumbar part 23 and a shoulder part 24 adjoining it upwards. The back shell parts 23, 24 are pivotally connected to one another over a specific area. A spring support with springs 25 (see FIGS. 2 and 3) holds the shoulder part 24 against stops 26 in a forward pivoting position. When leaning against the shoulder part 24, this can then be pivoted somewhat backwards against the spring support, so that an adaptation to the respective sitting position of a user is possible.
The back shell parts 23 and 24 are connected to one another via joints 28 located on their side edges 27. For the compression springs 25, which are arranged on the back of the backrest 6, projections are provided, between which the springs 25 are inserted.
At the joints 28 there are also connection points for fastening armrests 29 which can be seen in FIG. 1 and which can be attached if necessary.
In Fig. 3 it can also be clearly seen that the pelvic or lumbar part 23 extends over the entire width of the seat. As a result, as well as through the stiffening formations 10 and a cambered, ie bulging outwards, high strength is obtained in this area, despite the small thickness, so that the forces occurring when leaning against can also be transmitted well.
The seat shell 8 and the back shell 9 with the pelvic part 23 and the shoulder part 24 preferably consist of glass mat-reinforced, thermoplastic material, preferably of reinforced polypropylene. As a result, the shells can be produced in one piece in one operation.

Overall, by integrating an otherwise provided support frame in the seat shell 8 and also in the back shell 9, a very small overall height or thickness is obtained both in the area of the seat and the backrest, so that armchairs with a continuously slender side silhouette are possible without disadvantageous Compromises regarding e.g. the adjustment mechanism and the like must be dealt with. At the same time, the construction and assembly are considerably simplified.
