Abstract

1. Method for manufacturing a paper feed roller with a foam body (4), which, during the formation of a cylindrical roller surface (5), is ground, whereupon after grinding a powder consisting of paper filler is applied to the roller surface.

Description

The invention relates to a method for producing a paper transport roller with a foam body which is ground to form a cylindrical roller surface.

Such a procedure is the subject of the older German patent application with the official file number P 36 12 631.4. A paper transport roller produced according to this method has a porous roller surface after grinding off the foam body, the friction coefficient of which is relatively uninfluenced by external stresses and soiling. However, the coefficient of friction of this paper transport roller is relatively high and hardly allows any slippage between the paper to be transported and the paper transport roller. However, such slippage can occur with certain types of paper transport and with irregularities such as Taper of the paper feed roller may be required.

The invention is based on the object of developing the above-mentioned method for producing a paper transport roller with a view to reducing the coefficient of friction, which remains essentially unchanged even when the roller is subjected to prolonged use.

This object is achieved in that after grinding a powder consisting of a paper filler is applied to the roller surface.

Zu diesen Zusatzstoffen zählen u. a. Paper filler is understood to mean additives which are usually added to the pulp during paper production in order to make the paper soft, smooth and smooth. These additives include a. Aluminum silicate (kaolin), titanium oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide and plaster. In the method according to the invention, magnesium silicate powder is preferably applied. Magnesium silicate is also known under the name "talc".

While care is generally taken to avoid any contamination of a paper transport roller and existing contaminations represent a reduction in quality of the paper transport roller, the method according to the invention surprisingly reduces the coefficient of friction to a particularly long-term stable value by targeted contamination of the roller surface. Therefore, although it is known, for example from "Ullmann", volume 13, 1962, page 820, in particular to use talc (magnesium silicate) as a smoothing and hatching agent for sticky or rough surfaces, it was therefore not foreseeable that the application of the powder on the roller surface, the quality of the paper transport roller is significantly improved with regard to the long-term stability of the coefficient of friction. Experiments showed, however, that after applying and wiping off excess amounts of the powder, the coefficient of friction is reduced to a value which is about 50 percent lower, and this value remains even after the paper transport roller has been in continuous operation for a long time. Since the paper filler forming the powder is a paper-compatible substance, the properties of the paper running over the paper transport roller are not impaired.

Finally, a further advantage of the method according to the invention can be seen in the lack of any additional structural outlay and in the extremely low outlay in terms of process engineering for achieving the long-term stable reduction in the coefficient of friction.

Due to the reduction in the coefficient of friction to a long-term stable value, the use of the paper transport roller produced by the method according to the invention is provided in a printing device within the scope of the invention, the paper transport roller being arranged as a printing roller together with a tractor for conveying perforated continuous paper in a printing device. The reduced coefficient of friction of the roller surface advantageously allows slippage between the continuous paper and the paper transport roller, so that the edge perforation of the paper is prevented from being torn out due to different conveying speeds of the tractor and the paper transport roller.

In the following, the production of a paper transport roller according to the method according to the invention and its use will be explained using an example with reference to the figure.

First of all, a hollow cylindrical foam body 4 is applied to a cylindrical support body 1, which has axle extensions 2 on both end faces for installing the paper transport roller 3 in a printer or a typewriter. This preferably consists of a porous material with low residual deformability and has an outer diameter that is larger than the target diameter of the finished paper transport roller 3. After the foam body 4 has been applied, it is ground down to the desired diameter to form a cylindrical roller surface 5. In a subsequent process step, a powder, preferably composed of talc paper filler, is applied to the ground porous roller surface 5 and excess amounts of the powder are stripped off the roller surface 5.

The figure also shows a preferred use of the paper transport roller 3 produced by the method according to the invention as a printing roller, which together with a Tractor 6 for conveying continuous perforated paper 7 is arranged in a printing device. The continuous paper 7 comes from a paper supply, not shown here, over the tractor 6, which has its own drive 8. Endless chains 9 of the tractor 6 engage by means of teeth 10 in the edge perforation of the paper 7 and convey it to the printing roller 3 at a predetermined paper feed speed can be. The pressure roller 3 also has its own drive 13. The pressure roller 3 produced by the method according to the invention enables slippage between the roller surface 5 and the continuous paper 7, so that tearing out of the peripheral perforation due to different conveying speeds of the tractor 6 and the pressure roller 3 is avoided.
