Description
The present invention relates to a method for sequentially controlling a liquid crystal matrix display device having different optical responses in alternating and continuous electric fields. It finds an application in opto-electronics in the production of liquid crystal displays used as converters of electrical information into optical information, and for the binary display of complex images or alphanumeric characters.
More specifically, the invention relates to the sequential control of a matrix display device comprising a display cell containing a ferroelectric liquid crystal and with negative dielectric anisotropy and having different optical responses for excitation signals alternative and continuous. To date, this type of liquid crystal is the only one which exhibits different optical responses in alternating and continuous fields.
Such liquid crystals are generally obtained by mixing a ferroelectric chiral smectic C liquid crystal and a nematic, cholesteric or smectic A liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy.
In Figure 1, there is shown in longitudinal section a display cell containing such a liquid crystal. The
The internal face of the
Les molécules 22 sont celles du cristal liquide smectique C chirale ferro-électrique et les molécules 24, celles du cristal liquide nématique à anisotropie diélectrique négative.FIG. 2 shows the structure of the molecules of the
En se référant à cette figure 3, on va expliquer le comportement des molécules 22 et 24 du mélange 16 en présence d'un champ électrique appliqué à celui-ci.In Figure 3, there are shown the two possible orientations of the molecules of the

Several methods are known for sequential control of a liquid crystal matrix display device as described above, using alternating or continuous electrical excitation signals to locally control the electrooptical property of said liquid crystals.
Unfortunately, these methods require m + n connections or control circuits to display a matrix of mxn elementary display zones defined by the intersection of m row electrodes and n column electrodes.
Furthermore, the use of a direct current progressively alters the liquid crystal.
The object of the present invention is precisely a method of sequential control of a liquid crystal matrix display device requiring only four connections and control circuits for the display of any number of elementary display zones.

More specifically, the subject of the invention is a method of sequentially controlling a matrix display device comprising a liquid crystal interposed between first and second electrodes having the form of continuous conductive strips, this crystal having an electrooptical property, being formed of elementary zones distributed in matrices of which the electrooptical property can be selectively excited in order to obtain a displayed state or a non-displayed state, said liquid crystal having different optical responses for alternating and continuous excitation signals, and means for delivering said excitation signals to the electrodes, characterized in that the electrodes being two in number and each having a first and a second parallel sides, the electrooptical property of an elementary area XY corresponding to the overlap of is controlled a straight line of ordinate Y, parallel to the first and second sides of the first electrode and contained in the first electrode and an abscissa line X parallel to the first and second sides of the second electrode and contained in the second electrode,
- - by applying on the first side of the first electrode a first alternating potential V 1 superimposed on a first reference potential V o and on the second side of the first electrode a second alternating potential V 2 superimposed on the potential Vo with V 2 -V Constant ↑ so that the line of ordinate Y is subjected to the potential V o and that apart from this line, the first electrode is subjected to a potential different from Vo,
- - by applying on the first side of the second electrode a third alternating potential V 3 superimposed on a second reference potential V ' o and on the second side of the second electrode a fourth alternating potential V 4 superimposed on the potential V'o, with V 4 -V 3 constant, so that the abscissa line X is subjected to the potential V'o, and that apart from this line, the second electrode is subjected to a potential different from V'o, and
- by applying a fifth continuous potential Vs to the two sides of one of the electrodes, this potential being such that the area YX is only subject to this continuous potential V5, and that outside of the area XY the liquid crystal is subject to an alternative potential difference,
the displayed state of zone XY being obtained, by a positive polarity of the fifth potential Vs, the non-displayed state of zone XY being obtained by a negative polarity of the fifth potential Vs and maintaining the displayed or not displayed state of the XY area being obtained by removing the fifth potential.
As a liquid crystal with different optical responses for continuous and alternating excitation signals, a ferroelectric liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy can be used.
The method of the invention makes it possible, thanks to the use of two electrodes, to reduce the number of connections and control circuits. This is mainly due to the use of a liquid crystal having different optical properties for continuous and alternating excitation signals.
This process makes it possible to control point by point the zone of liquid crystal useful for display.
In order to simplify the control, the alternating potentials Vi and V 2 applied to the first electrode are advantageously in phase opposition. Likewise, the alternating potentials V 3 and V 4 applied to the second electrode are in phase opposition.
So that the display elementary areas are as small as possible, preferably the alternating potentials Vi and V 2 have a frequency fa and the alternating potentials V 3 and V 4 have a frequency fb different and not multiple of fa. In fact, the smaller the elementary areas, the better the definition of the image formed on the entire cell.
In order to simplify the control process, Vi, V 2 , V 3 , V 4 are advantageously alternative potentials with zero mean values, Vi, V 2 , V 3 and V 4 then representing the effective values of these potentials.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge more clearly from the description which follows, given purely by way of illustration but not limitation.

Les électrodes 18a et 20a recouvrent, de façon uniforme respectivment la majeure partie des parois transparentes 12 et 14 de la cellule d'affichage 10.In Figure 4, there is shown a part of a display device to which the control method of the invention applies. This device differs from those of the prior art, as shown in Figure 1, only by the use of two
The
The liquid crystal whose electrooptical property is to be excited for display by the method of the invention is presented as for the prior art, in the form of a film of 0.5 to 30 μm, inserted between the two
On va maintenant décrire le procédé de commande séquentielle selon l'invention utilisant la structure d'électrode décrite ci-dessus, en référence aux figures 5 et 6.We will now describe the sequential control method according to the invention using the electrode structure described above, with reference to FIGS. 5 and 6.
La droite Y est perpendiculaire à une droite d'abscisse X (figure 6) parallèle aux côtés 33 et 34 de l'électrode 20a.FIG. 5 shows a schematic view explaining how to obtain a straight line of ordinate Y parallel to the
The crossing of the two lines X and Y defines an elementary display area XY in the same way as a line electrode and a column electrode of a matrix device with crossed bands described with reference to FIG. 1 did.
In part II of this figure, the potentials used to form the line Y have been represented on an orthonormal reference frame having the ordinate Y and the abscissa V (Y).
Ensuite, on applique par l'intermédiaire du circuit de commande 40 connecté au contact électrique 42 placé sur le côté 32 de l'électrode 18a, un second potentiel alternatif V2 superposé au potentiel continu Vo.To control the straight line of ordinate Y, first of all, by means of the
V2 et V1 sont tels que V2-Vi est constant.V 2 and V 1 are such that V 2 -Vi is constant.
V 2 and V 1 are preferably in phase opposition for the simplicity of the control. But of course, it is possible to apply, without departing from the scope of the invention, potentials V 1 and V 2 in phase. V 1 and V 2 have a frequency equal to fa which can vary from 25Hz to 100kHz. As we can see in part II of figure 5, V 2 and V 1 surround the reference potential V o . The line of ordinate Y parallel to the
By varying the values of V 2 and V 1 around V o while respecting the condition V 2 -V i constant, we can move the line Y brought to the reference potential Vo from one side to the other of the
In the illustrated case, a straight line A 1 of ordinate Yi obtained by applying the potentials V 1a and V 2a and a straight line A 2 of ordinate y 2 obtained by applying the potentials V 1b and V 2b , V 2a - V 1a being equal to V 2b -V 1b .
Sur la figure 6, on a représenté une vue schématique expliquant la commande selon l'invention d'une zone élémentaire XY, définie par le croisement de la droite d'ordonnée Y, formée comme ci-dessus et d'une droite d'abscisse X, formée de façon similaire.FIG. 6 shows a schematic view explaining the command according to the invention of an elementary area XY, defined by the crossing of the straight line of ordinate Y, formed as above and of a straight line of abscissa X, similarly formed.
In
In part II of this figure, there is shown as described with reference to part II of FIG. 5, the potentials V 2 and V 1 making it possible to subject the line Y to the potential Vo.
In part III of FIG. 6, the potentials used for the formation of the line X on a orthonormal reference having ordinate V (X) and abscissa (X).
To control the abscissa line X parallel to the
Then, via the
Va and V 4 have a different frequency fb and not multiple of fa which can range from 25Hz to 100 kHz
En dehors de cette droite, l'électrode 20a est soumise à un potentiel différent de V'o.As can be seen in part III of Figure 6, Va and V 4 frame the reference potential V'o. The abscissa line X parallel to the
By varying the values of V 4 and Va, independently of those of Vi and V 2 around V'o while respecting the condition V 4 -V 3 constant, we can move the line X brought to the reference potential V ' o from one end to the other of the
For Vi, V 2 , Va and V 4 given, there is therefore an elementary area XY, such that the ferroelectric liquid crystal and with negative dielectric anisotropy, sees at its terminals the reference potential Vo on the
The displayed state of the XY zone (light on dark background) is obtained for a positive polarity of the fifth continuous potential Vs applied to the sides of one of the electrodes, for example the
Maintaining the displayed or not displayed state of the XY zone is obtained by deleting the fifth potential Vs applied.
The other elementary zones remain in their displayed or not displayed optical state.
Consequently, the resulting couple Γ which is exerted on
If the inequality α ( s + c) 2 > | β. c | is verified, the resulting torque which is exerted on the
On the other hand, if the inequality has ( c + c) 2 <1 β c | is verified, the resulting torque which is exerted on the
The control method according to the invention can be implemented using the same control circuits as those used in the conventional point-to-point control methods of a liquid crystal matrix imager.
The description given above has of course only been given for explanatory purposes, any modification without departing from the scope of the invention that may be envisaged. In particular, the liquid crystal may be formed from only one liquid crystal provided, however, that it has different optical responses in continuous and alternating fields. Furthermore, one of the electrodes may be opaque, the display device then operating in reflection.
