Les dispositifs connus de sous-calibrage sont de deux sortes :

- - les projectiles gigognes, composés d'un gros projectile "sabot" au calibre du mortier, et d'un projectile sous-calibré qui est contenu dans le "sabot", ce dernier servant de mini-mortier et étant lui-même tiré à une dizaine de mètres devant le mortier.

Les inconvénients de ces deux dispositifs sont les suivants :
- - les tubes-réducteurs n'utilisent que des petits projectiles, qui ne permettent pas d'effectuer, en même temps, l'instruction au maniement et au chargement des projectiles volumineux et lourds dans les mortiers de grands calibres ;
- - les projectiles gigognes sont d'un emploi coûteux, ils sont peu précis, ils encrassent les mortiers et ils habituent à se déplacer devant le mortier pour récupérer le "sabot" (ce qui est prohibé par les règles élémentaires de sécurité).
