Abstract
Description
The invention relates to protective layers of oxides at risk of decay applied to a carrier in a vacuum plasma spraying process, in particular a Cr 2 0 a protective layer and a process for their production. Protective layers of this type can be applied to very different carrier bodies and are deposited on workpiece surfaces for various reasons, mostly with the intention of using the special material properties of chromium oxide to increase the service life of the carrier body in a specific application and / or to open up new areas of application for the base material .
In the publication "Technology and Application of Plasma Spraying in Vacuum", Journal for Industrial Production, Volume 67, No. 6, 1977, pages 321 to 325, among other things, ceramic materials such as Al Z O a -Ti0 2 or Cr 2 0 3 or cermets such as WC-Co or Cr 3 C 2 -Ni-Cr are mentioned as coating materials for wear protection layers. Protective layers of this type can be applied using various thermal spray processes (plasma spraying, high-speed plasma spraying, flame shock spraying, plasma spraying in a vacuum), but without going into detail about the production and properties of VPS-sprayed Cr 2 0 3 protective layers.
Due to the high energy density in the plasma flame, plasma spraying is very well suited to melting oxidic and therefore mostly high-melting powder articles and depositing them as a spray layer on a workpiece surface. In many applications, the Cr 2 0 a protective layer produced in this way is not sufficiently dense, its adhesion to the workpiece surface and the adhesive bond of the individual wettable powder particles to one another is insufficient. The specific physical properties of Cr 2 0 3 cause additional changes in the chromium oxide plasma spray layer: Since chromium oxide is a chemically stable compound only significantly below its melting temperature, it partially breaks down when it melts in the plasma flame and oxygen is released.
Although atmospheric oxygen can constantly diffuse into the plasma flame during plasma spraying, its concentration is not sufficient to prevent this partial decomposition of Cr 2 0 3 into metallic chromium and oxygen. This process is usually intensified by the fact that, in addition to Ar, H 2 is used as the plasma gas to generate the plasma flame energy and heat content. As a result, the chromium oxide particles are melted in a reducing atmosphere, which favors the rate of decay. As a result, a Cr 2 0 3 sprayed layer contains, in addition to suboxides, more or less pronounced areas of metallic chromium which greatly reduce the layer hardness compared to the values of the solid chromium oxide. It should be expressly mentioned here that this layer structure can be very advantageous in certain applications. On the other hand, however, it is not possible to produce very pure Cr 2 0 3 spray layers due to the physical situation mentioned. Since chrome oxide layers are mainly used as a protective layer on basic materials that are prone to wear and corrosion due to the chemical resistance of the pure Cr 2 0 3 , there is the rather disturbing danger of the protective effect due to embedded suboxides and metallic phases in addition to the reduction in layer hardness in the reduction of Corrosion resistance. In addition, the dielectric strength of the pure Cr 2 0 3 layer, which is good insulation per se, is greatly reduced by the metallic contamination.
Zur Spritzschichtdichte ist zu erläutern, daß hier zwei Effekte auftreten:Regarding the spray layer density, it should be explained that two effects occur here:
If a spray layer is porous, the density of the layer is below the solid value.
So erhöht sich z.B. für Cr203 die Dichte in Richtung des Wertes für Cr = 7,2 g/CM 3.If a partial reduction occurs in an oxide spray coating, the density changes in the direction of the value for the metallic partner. For example, for Cr 2 0 3 the density increases in the direction of the value for Cr = 7.2 g / CM 3 .
Es liegen hier also zwei gegenläufige Effekte vor:So there are two opposite effects here:
Verminderung der Porosität erhöht die Dichte einer Cr203-Spritzschicht, Verhinderung des Einbaus von metallischen Phasen senkt die Dichte (spezifisches Gewicht).Reducing the porosity increases the density of a Cr 2 0 3 spray layer, preventing the incorporation of metallic phases lowers the density (specific weight).
Vacuum plasma spraying technology (VPS technology) with the transfer of the spraying process to vacuum leads to significant improvements in coating conditions and layer properties compared to plasma spraying in the atmosphere (APS). The kinetic impact energy is 2 to 3 times higher in a vacuum. The spray powder particles are correspondingly faster, and denser spray layers with reduced residual porosity are created. With the help of the transmitted arc, the carrier surface can be freed of gas contamination, water vapor and thin oxide skins before coating. This leads to a significant improvement in the adhesion of the spray layer. Additional heating of the carrier before coating also has an effect in the same direction. This can be carried out without risk of oxidation, since the coating process is practically carried out in the absence of reactive gases. At the same time, internal stresses in the spray layer can be reduced or even avoided during coating with targeted temperature changes.
The listed advantages of the VPS technology have so far not been recognized and used in the case of Cr 2 0 3 protective layers. This is mainly due to the fact that the lowering of the pressure in the plasma flame, the higher flame energy, the lack of atmospheric oxygen and the reducing atmosphere of the Ar / H 2 plasma flame greatly increase the risk of oxygen loss, i.e. an even greater one Chromium oxide reduction is expected. With a targeted increase in the 0 2 partial pressure in the vacuum chamber during the C 2 0 3 coating, the risk of decay could possibly be reduced. But it is not appropriate because everyone is on the 0 2 freedom-based advantages of VPS coating technology were lost.
The invention has for its object to provide a Cr 2 0 3 protective layer of the type described above, which does not have the aforementioned metallic chromium deposits, is sprayed as tightly as possible or has a specifically set residual porosity for certain applications, but in both cases due to the extensive chemical purity has a very high layer hardness.
The measured hardness according to the Vickers method should be over 2000 Kp / mm 2 (HV), compared to the layer hardness of APS protective layers, which are usually between 750 and 1200 Kp / mm 2 (HV), depending on the amount of embedded metallic phases. Furthermore, the Cr 2 0 3 protective layer should also far surpass the APS chromium oxide protective layer in its electrical insulation effect. The dielectric strength, measured in volts / layer thickness, can be used as an indirect measure of the quantity of the incorporated metallic phases, and thus also of the corrosion stability. The dielectric strength of an APS-applied Cr 2 0 3 protective layer does not exceed 1 V / gm layer thickness. At least 5 V / 11m layer thickness is required.
This object is achieved in that the Cr 2 0 3 protective layer produced in the vacuum plasma spraying process contains very little suboxide and practically no metallic chromium deposits, has a density almost corresponding to the density of solid-state chromium oxide, has a residual porosity well below 2% and a Vickers hardness of more than 2000 Kp / mm 2 (HV) is measurable.
Contrary to all expectations, the Cr 2 0 3 protective layer sprayed on with the aid of VPS technology has practically no metallic phases, although the pressure within the plasma flame is greatly reduced compared to atmospheric plasma spraying, but the energy content of the plasma flame is increased and there is no oxygen and is injected with a reducing plasma gas mixture.
The porosity of the Cr 2 0 3 protective layer is advantageously not more than 2%, the specific density is not more than 5.3 g / cm 3 and the Vickers hardness is at least 2150 Kp / cm 2 (HV).
The electrical dielectric strength of the Cr 2 0 3 protective layer is advantageously at least 5 V / 1 1m layer thickness. The surface of the carrier is expediently lightly sandblasted, sputter-cleaned and degassed by the arc by heating before the Cr 2 0 3 protective layer is applied.
In certain applications, it may also be advantageous to spray on an underlayer before the Cr 2 O 3 protective layer is applied.
Alternatively, a Ti0 2 protective layer can also be applied instead of a Cr 2 0 3 protective layer. The invention can also be applied to all oxides at risk of decay.
A process according to the invention for producing a Cr 2 0 3 protective layer is characterized in that the Cr 2 0 3 protective layer is applied in a vacuum plasma spraying process at an ambient pressure of approximately 140 mbar and a spraying interval of approximately 240 mm, the plasma current being approximately 720 A, the flame output is about 57 KW and the spray powder delivery is about 30 g / min, while the throughput of plasma gas is about 30 1 / min Ar and about 10 1 / min H 2 .
The carrier of the Cr 2 0 3 protective layer is expediently only lightly sandblasted before it is applied directly.
Advantageously, the carrier of the Cr 2 0 3 protective layer is sputter-cleaned immediately prior to its application by the transferred arc and degassed with heating.

Depending on the plasma parameter setting, Cr 2 0 3
In the representation of the micrograph preparation in FIG. 1, not only the areas completely reduced to chrome are visible. Areas in which Cr 2 0 3 was only partially reduced, circumscribed by the formula Cr x Oy, can also be seen optically in the polished micrograph of the sprayed layer, the area that appears darker the greater the 0 2 loss. This can be determined by measuring the layer hardness. The diameter of the
As a major difference, the Cr 2 0 3
A physical explanation of the surprisingly resulting properties of the vacuum-sprayed Cr 2 0 a
