Abstract

In order, when a cigarette is being smoked, to reduce, or even reverse, the tendency of the condensate-content to increase, a cigarette filter unit is proposed in which at least one partition having at least two areas of different porosities and made of a material which allows smoke to pass through it, is arranged between each two filter elements aligned axially with one another in the flow cross section of the filter unit. In this connection, a first partition area is designed in such a manner that its permeability decreases as the portion of tobacco associated with the cigarette filter unit is smoked, the tobacco smoke, passing through the said cigarette filter unit, flowing increasingly through the second partition area.

Description

The invention relates to a cigarette filter rod, within which, to form at least one filter unit, sections of different design are arranged alternately in succession and surrounded by an enveloping strip, a method for producing this cigarette filter rod and a use thereof.

When smoking a cigarette without a cigarette filter, with or without ventilation, and / or with a conventional cigarette filter, the condensate content during the smoking thereof increases relatively strongly in the smoke flowing into the mouth of the smoker through the suction-side cigarette end, which is undesirable.

From FR-A-2 008 066 a tobacco smoke filter with a hollow, closed, smoke gas permeable inner element of uniform porosity is known. This filter, as well as the chamber filter known from DE-A-2 555129, in which the filter elements for filling the chambers with a free-flowing filter material are initially only covered over part of their circumference with an enveloping strip and then the filler opening is closed by means of a sealing strip however, no means for achieving an at least approximately constant suction resistance and for the most uniform possible aroma release from the user of a cigarette connected with such a filter.

The object of the present invention is, in particular, to provide a cigarette filter rod which, after being subdivided into individual filter units in combination with a tobacco part attached to the individual filter units when the latter is smoking, does not have these disadvantages of the known cigarette filters or does so only to a much lesser extent, i.e. with them Help a more constant or even decreasing amount of condensate per train of the smoker on the filter cigarette is achieved with at least approximately constant suction resistance.

According to the invention, this object is achieved by means of a cigarette filter rod of the type mentioned at the outset.

It has proven to be expedient if the filter elements are surrounded by a sheathing tube formed from at least a first and a second longitudinal stripe of different porosity, and this sheathing tube is constricted or pressed together to form the partition between two successive and spaced-apart filter elements. Further advantageous developments of this training are the subject of claims 3 to 11.

It can also be expedient if, between two successive filter elements, a partition is arranged which extends transversely to the flow direction of the filter unit and which is provided with at least a first and a second area, each having a different porosity. Further advantageous developments of this training are the subject of claims 13 to 15.

Dazu sind weitere vorteilhafte Weiterausgestaltungen der erfindungsgemässen Zigarettenfiltereinheit Gegenstand der Ansprüche 16 bis 21.It can also be expedient if a very fine fabric or a perforated film is used for the one partition area, in which the number, size and distribution of the openings is precisely defined. To this end, further advantageous refinements of the cigarette filter unit according to the invention are the subject of claims 16 to 21.

The present invention furthermore relates to a method for producing a cigarette filter rod according to the invention, wherein a sequence of filter elements which are uniformly spaced from one another is enveloped over a part of their circumference by means of at least one continuously supplied first porous envelope strip and is connected to this first envelope strip, and which is characterized in that one then completely covers the remaining uncovered surface area of the strand formed in this way by means of at least one continuously supplied second envelope strip, which has a different porosity compared to the first envelope strip, and connects the latter to the first envelope strip along its two side edges, then that formed by the two envelope strips Completely constricts, or clamps together, the pipe at at least one location between each two filter elements Clamping point glued, the strand-shaped unit formed in this way, containing the spaced-apart filter elements, is completely enveloped by means of at least one wrapping strip, and the strand thus obtained is divided into individual rod-shaped sections.

Zweckmässige Weiterausgestaltungen des erfindungsgemässen Verfahrens sind Gegenstand der Ansprüche 23 bis 25.Appropriate further developments of the method according to the invention are the subject of claims 23 to 25.

The invention also relates to a use of the cigarette filter rod according to claim 1 for the manufacture of filter cigarettes.

As can be seen from FIGS. 1 to 4, in the method shown, the plug-shaped filter elements 1 consisting of cellulose or acetate are known in a known manner by means of a conventional transport and spacing device, not shown, which aligns the filter elements 1 alternately axially with respect to one another in the direction of the arrow 2 moved forward and at the same time brought evenly apart.

Thereafter, the uniformly spaced and axially aligned filter elements 1 are continuously fed to a likewise continuously supplied porous envelope strip 3, placed thereon and guided in the lateral direction through guide parts, not shown, and synchronously through a likewise not shown, arranged above the envelope strip 3 this circumferential pressure band held in their relative position to each other and moved forward together with the enveloping strip 3.

The envelope strip 3 is on its side facing the filter elements 1 with a heat-softenable adhesive, which e.g. was previously applied to the envelope strip 3 by means of an adhesive application device 4 in strips 5 and 6, so that it is possible to fasten the individual filter elements 1 to the envelope strip 3 immediately after their transfer to the envelope strip 3 with the aid of a heating element (FIG. 1, Place A) and thus a relative shift against each other, that is, a change in their distance from each other, impossible (Fig. 2). The wider adhesive strips 5 are used to fasten the filter elements 1 to the enveloping strip 3 and the narrower adhesive strips 6 are used to fix the constriction (FIG. 1, point D) of the sheathing tube 7.

After the attachment of the individual filter elements 1 on the porous envelope strip 3, the latter is passed onto an endless conveyor belt and then these parts come together in a two-part shaping unit, not shown (FIG. 1, point B), where the envelope strip 3 during its forward movement up to a slot 8 of about 4 to 6 mm is placed around the filter elements 1 having a circumference of 25 mm. This structure is then guided by means of the conveyor belt to completely glue the envelope strip 3 to the filter elements 1 and to precisely fix the filter diameter first under a second heating element covering the upper half of the strand and immediately thereafter under a second cooling element also covering the upper half of the strand, as is best known for example from DE-A-25 55 129.

Then a closure strip 9, which has a substantially coarser porosity than the envelope strip 3 and whose width is slightly larger than the width of the slot 8, is fed in, placed over the slot 8 (FIG. 1, point C) and by means of a heatable one Element glued to the exposed surface of the filter elements 1 and the side edges of the enveloping strip 3 by softening the thermoplastic coating of the sealing strip 9. In order to achieve a precise external shape of the strand formed in this way, the strand provided with the heated closure strip 9 is passed under a water-cooled cooling part, where the softened thermoplastic coating of the closure strip 9 solidifies.

After the strand encased in this way by means of two strips 3 and 9 of different porosity is sealed, it is fed to a clamping arrangement 10 (FIG. 1, point D), where the encasing tube formed from the two strips 3 and 9 between each two successive and spaced apart Filter elements 1, as can be seen in particular from FIGS. 4 and 5, are pressed together and constricted, so that two cone-shaped tube sections 11 and 12 are formed, the cone surface of which are two regions of different porosity, corresponding to the two strips 3 and 9, having. The clamping jaws of the clamping arrangement 10 are designed to be heated, so that the clamping points 13 of the tube 3, 9 are fixed.

The rod-shaped unit formed in this way, which contains the spaced-apart filter elements 1 and the constricted pipe sections, is then completely encased in a known manner by means of a porous or non-porous wrapping strip 14 (FIG. 1, point E; FIG. 4), the latter glued and so continuously formed strand supplied to a separator, where it is divided such that the length of each filter rod is, as usual, four or six times the length of a single filter unit intended for a cigarette.

When smoking one with such a single NEN tobacco part connected to the cigarette filter unit, the smoke sucked in by the latter flows first through the filter element 1 arranged on the tobacco side and then from the inside of the conical tube section 11 through the cone-shaped region of the section 11 formed by the porous strip 9 into the annular chamber 15, from there through the porous strip 9 formed conical surface area of the pipe section 12 into the interior of the latter and then through the filter element 1 arranged on the mouth side. With increasing blockage of the more porous areas of the conical pipe sections 11 and 12 formed by the strip 9 by smoke components filtered out of the smoke, the smoke which is drawn through flows increasingly through the smoke the areas of finer porosity of the conical tube sections 11 and 12 formed in the strip 3, so that if a suitable choice of the different porosity of the two strips 3 and 9 is obtained when one with such a single cigarette filter is used In contrast to previously provided filter cigarettes, an at least approximately constant suction resistance and thus a uniform aroma release can be achieved.

The annular chamber 15 formed between the two cone-shaped tube sections 11 and 12 and the wrapping strip 14 can be filled with free-flowing filter material, for example, as is known from DE-A-25 55 129.

Of course, it is also possible to fill the chambers formed in the conical tube sections 11 and 12 with free-flowing filter material, for which purpose the latter between the positions B and C (FIG. 1) into the chambers 16 formed between adjacent filter elements 1 and the enveloping strip 3 (Fig. 3) must be introduced.

The reinforcing ribs 17 (FIGS. 5 and 7a) simultaneously formed when the pipe 3, 9 is constricted by means of the clamping arrangement 10 form an advantageous reinforcement of the strand thus formed for its further processing and for the finished filter.

Fig. 7b stellt einen Schnitt durch eine einzelne Filtereinheit gemäss Fig. 6 dar.7b shows a section through a single filter unit according to FIG. 6.

In FIGS. 8a and 9a, two other constriction variants are shown in perspective analogous to FIG. 7a, and in FIGS. 8b and 9b the sections through the corresponding finished filter units, analogous to FIG. 7b.

In den Fig. 10 und 11 sind zwei weitere Einschnürungsvarianten dargestellt, wobei bei diesen die Einschnürung gemäss Fig. 10a respektive 11 a unmittelbar an die Stirnfläche eines der Filterelemente 1 angrenzend durchgeführt wird, so dass eine Filtereinheitlänge L immer nur eine durch das Rohr 3, 9 gebildete kegelförmige Kammer 12' aufweist, wogegen die in Fig. 5 dargestellte Ausführungsform zwei solcher Kammern 11,12 aufweist.10 and 11 show two further constriction variants, in which the constriction according to FIG. 10a or 11a is carried out directly adjacent to the end face of one of the filter elements 1, so that a filter unit length L is always only one through the pipe 3, 9 formed conical chamber 12 ', whereas the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 has two such chambers 11,12.

In the embodiment of a cigarette filter unit shown in FIG. 12, the manufacture of the cigarette filter unit shown schematically in FIG. 14, which proceeds essentially analogously to the manufacturing method shown in FIG. 1 and therefore does not have to be described in detail in detail, between the distanced ones Filter elements 1, adjacent to the mutually facing end faces of the latter, each have a spacing element 18, which is shown in perspective on an enlarged scale in FIG. 13.

In order to ensure that, when smoking, the sheathing tube formed from two different porous strips 3, 9 is traversed transversely by the smoke to be filtered, the gas-impermeable spacer element 18 is provided over part of its length with an annular fastening area 19, the diameter F of which is less than the inner diameter G of the outer sheath 14 and the sheathing tube 3, 9 sealingly connected to it over the entire circumference of this fastening area 19. Furthermore, the spacing element 18 is provided with its supporting ribs 21 extending in the radial direction in order to center it in the interior of the casing tube 3, 9 and at the same time to form flow channels 20.

In FIG. 14, parts or digits analogous to FIG. 1 are provided with the same reference symbols.

In the embodiment shown in FIG. 12, it is also conceivable that the sheathing tube is formed from a single porous strip, and that the spacer element 18 is made of gas-permeable material and the flow resistance of the latter is different from that of the material of the sheathing tube 3. If the flow resistance of the latter is lower than that of the spacer element 18, the smoke to be filtered first flows from the tobacco-side filter element 1 via the frustoconical jacket surface 11 from the inside to the outside into the annular space 15 and from there via the frustoconical jacket surface 12 from the outside to the inside and then through the mouth-side filter element 1. With increasing clogging of the frusto-conical jacket surfaces 11 and 12 by flue gas components filtered out, the flue gas stream to be filtered runs more and more through the spacer element 18, which has a higher flow resistance.

It is also possible that if the spacer element 18 is made of gas-impermeable material, it is provided in its longitudinal direction with one or more very thin passage bores 22 with a diameter of approximately 1/100 mm in diameter.

In the cigarette filter train shown in FIG. 15, a partition wall 23, which extends transversely to the flow direction of the filter units, is clamped between two successive filter elements 1 and is provided with two areas with different porosity and made of material that filters tobacco smoke.

The partition 23 is formed by a paper tape 24 which has two regions 25 and 26 of different porosity running parallel to one another in its longitudinal direction or is composed of two different strips.

The paper tape 24 formed in this way is, as can be seen in particular from FIGS. 16 and 17, alternately first placed along the outside 27 of the one filter element 1, then across the end face 28 of the same, and then along the opposite outside 29 of the subsequent filter element 1, then the whole thing is drawn through a calibration opening 30 and then completely covered and glued by means of a wrapping strip 14.

The strand thus formed is fed to a separating device, as in the previously described embodiments, where it is divided such that the length of each filter rod is four or six times the length of a single filter unit intended for a cigarette. The length of a single filter unit can be, for example, L, 2L, 3L etc.

In den Figuren 18 und 19 ist in Draufsicht je ein Ausschnitt aus zwei verschiedenen, zur Bildung des einen Trennwandbereiches verwendbaren, aus Polymerfäden hergestellten Gewebebändern dargestellt, das heisst in den Figuren 1 bis 4 und 14 kann z.B. der Verschlussstreifen 9 und in den Figuren 15 bis 17 der Streifen 25 aus einem solchen Gewebeband bestehen.FIGS. 18 and 19 each show a top view of a detail from two different fabric tapes that can be used to form the one partition wall area and that are made of polymer threads, i.e. in FIGS. 1 to 4 and 14, e.g. the closure strip 9 and in FIGS. 15 to 17 the strip 25 consist of such a fabric tape.

In the fabric band shown in FIG. 18, the geometric distribution of the passage openings and their cross sections are completely uniform.

The fabric tape 9 'used, for example, in FIG. 1 to form a partition wall area 9 and shown in FIG. 18, is not primarily intended in the finished cigarette filter unit to filter aerosols out of a flue gas stream flowing through them. The filtering capacity of the fabric belt 9 'for the particular phase of the flue gas stream flowing through is measurable, but in practice it is rather negligible; the fabric band part 9 primarily performs the function of a switching element on the finished filter. For this purpose, the thickness of the fabric band 9 'must be very small, so that the first partition area formed therefrom causes a relatively small initial flow resistance when the finished filter is used. The effect of the fabric 9 'forming the first partition area 9 is such that when a flue gas aerosol flows through the latter, a very small proportion of the aerosol particles remain adhered to the fabric 9', but this proportion is sufficiently large to be noticeable Reduction of the free cross sections of the fabric band openings and thereby a strong increase in the flow resistance caused by the fabric 9 'loaded in this way. For this purpose, there is the thickness of the fabric 9 'pm in a range from 30 to 100, the number of fabric openings in a range of 500 to 25,000 and the cross-sections of the individual tissue opening in a range of 100 to 2500 p m 2.

In order to be sure that the series production of the cigarette filter units achieves exactly reproducible characteristic values of the latter, the fabric 9 'must not consist of a material in which the spatial distribution of the flue gas through openings as well as their cross sections and cross-sectional shapes is random.

For this purpose, it has proven to be expedient if the distance between individual openings of the fabric section forming the first partition wall region 9 and the size of the cross-sectional areas of these openings deviate less than 10% from the predetermined value.

In the case of the cigarette filter unit shown in FIG. 20, which has a closure strip 9 consisting of a fabric band 9 'according to FIG. 18, ventilation openings 32 are provided, seen in the flow direction T of the filter unit, after the partition walls 11 and 12 between the inside and the outside of the filter unit. The latter are provided in such a number and with such cross sections that, for example, an initial dilution of 50% of the tobacco smoke extracted from the tobacco part 33 is achieved.

If a cigarette provided with such a cigarette filter unit as shown in FIG. 20 is now smoked, then the tobacco smoke flow flows with a relatively small initial pressure drop of, for example, 30 caused by the fabric strip 9 of the partition walls 11 and 12 when the smoker first pulls this ignited cigarette mm WS through these fabric sections, whereby aerosol particles in tobacco smoke adhere to these fabric sections of the partition walls 11 and 12, and increasingly reduce the free cross section of the individual fabric openings through which smoke travels on the suction side of the filter unit and thus that through the fabric sections of the dividing walls 11 and 12 causes the pressure drop to increase, so that, over the duration of the tobacco part 33 being consumed, with increasing blockage of the tissue sections through which smoke flows through smoke aerosol particles, the smoke sucked in by the smoker via the ventilator ion openings 32 increasingly more air is added. It is thereby achieved that the increasing concentration of the tobacco part 33, the increasing concentration of the tobacco smoke flowing into the filter unit, is again increasingly diluted with air after the partition walls 11 and 12 in the filter unit, and thus the concentration of the smoke sucked in during the consecutive puffs of the smoker in contrast to the past, can be kept constant within relatively narrow limits, and the aroma of the tobacco herb soaked up by the smoker ches remains practically unchanged over the entire smoking time of the tobacco part 33 or even decreases, if desired, in contrast to earlier.

The enveloping strip 3 used in the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 20 can consist of air-permeable material or of material that is practically air-impermeable for the smoker. In the latter case in particular, the partition walls 11 and 12 must in any case be provided with a plurality of overflow openings 31. The cross sections of the latter are to be dimensioned such that they are at least ten times larger than the largest openings of the fabric section 9 'forming the second partition area. Such a design allows the maintenance of a minimal flue gas flow even when the tissue areas 9 are almost or completely blocked.

In contrast to the fabric tape 9 'shown in FIG. 19, the geometric distribution of the passage openings and their cross-sections varies in the fabric tape 9 "shown in FIG. 19, but not by chance, but according to a precisely predetermined distribution arrangement over the entire tape length.

Of course, other configurations of fabric tapes are also conceivable.
