In (1) bis (8) sind flammfest ausgerüstete Polystyrolharze und Verfahren zu deren Herstellung beschrieben (vgl. insbesondere (2), Spalte 4, Zeilen 5 bis 20 sowie die Beispiele und (5) Patentanspruch).Flame-resistant polystyrene resins and processes for their production are described in (1) to (8) (cf. in particular (2), column 4, lines 5 to 20 and the examples and (5) patent claim).
Self-extinguishing molding compositions based on styrene polymers contain, in addition to the polymer, a number of additives, namely flame retardants and one or mostly several stabilizers, possibly synergists and other auxiliaries.
For their preparation, the additives can be added to the monomer during the production of the styrene polymer. They can also be added to the styrene polymer subsequently, for example by mixing them in powder form with polystyrene granules. A preferred technical production method for self-extinguishing molding compositions is that the additives are incorporated homogeneously into the styrene polymer by melting the polymer on extruders or kneaders and mixing the additives into the melt. This melt is then granulated again [cf. also (1), (2) and (5)].
It is known that self-extinguishing molding compositions based on styrene polymers tend to decompose and discolour at higher temperatures. Molding compositions are also known which show no discoloration at the usual processing temperatures by adding suitable stabilizer mixtures. Even with these stabilized molding compounds, care must be taken to ensure that the permissible temperatures are not exceeded during their manufacture and processing.
A disadvantage of the above-mentioned preferred method of producing self-extinguishing molding compositions is that in this process the occurrence of high temperatures, be it only briefly or locally, must be avoided with great care. Even with stabilized products that can withstand storage of the granulate at 240 ° C for one hour without discoloration, it is necessary to melt and homogenize the mixture on the extruder at temperatures of only 170 to 190 ° C, cf. (1). This low melt temperature is due to the fact that locally higher temperatures than the average melt temperature occur in extruders due to the action of the high shear fields. Another disadvantage is the fact that an additional production stage with expensive extruders or kneaders which are expensive in terms of energy and maintenance is required for this.
The styrene polymers required for the process described in (1), (2) or (5) are usually produced in continuous processes in which the product is obtained in the form of a hot melt. This melt is discharged through nozzles, cooled and granulated. Extruders, in which auxiliary materials such as mineral oil, dyes, etc. are added to the melt, are often connected upstream of the discharge nozzles.
It is the aim of the present invention to avoid the remelting of the styrene polymer and the re-extrusion and granulation in the production of self-extinguishing molding compositions. This can save a considerable amount of investment, operating personnel, energy and maintenance work.
This goal can be achieved by mixing the additives in the discharge extruder of the polymerization plant with the polymer melt coming from the polymerization. However, due to the high temperatures of the melt and the locally occurring excess temperatures in the extruder, it was to be expected that considerable decomposition and discoloration of the product would occur. This fear has been confirmed by tests.
The invention therefore relates to a process for the production of flame-resistant polystyrene which contains halogenated hydrocarbons (a) as flame retardants and stabilizers (b) and additionally has at least one further agent from the group of synergists (c) for the flame retardant, antioxidants (d) and additives (e),
by mixing polystyrene with one of the agents a) to e) in several stages.
According to the invention, in a first stage, the flame retardant a) and all or part of the stabilizers b) are premixed in a mixing device at temperatures up to 100.degree. this premix is then mixed in a second stage in a continuously operated single- or twin-screw extruder or kneader of conventional design with the other means that - seen in the direction of conveyance of the extruder - first the premix and any other means are continuously fed and then in the further mixing zones in this product stream, a melt of a polystyrene resin largely free of monomers and solvents, which has a temperature of 200 to 250 ° C., and, if appropriate, further agents are introduced; the flame-resistant polystyrene is discharged from the extruder in a manner known per se and the granules are obtained.
The aim of the invention is therefore to avoid discoloration and decomposition when hot polystyrene melt is mixed with flame retardants by premixing flame retardants and stabilizers at temperatures up to 100 ° C., preferably at room temperature, and this mixture with the polystyrene melt as it is comes to a polymerization plant, mixed on an extruder or kneader and this mixture is discharged and granulated in a manner known per se through a nozzle plate.
The process according to the invention and the means required for carrying it out are explained in more detail below:
The production of styrene resins is known, as is the processing of the product after the polymerization.
Polystyrene in the context of the process according to the invention is also to be understood as meaning the impact-resistant polystyrenes in which the polymerization of styrene in the presence of 2 to 30% by weight of a diene rubber or of block rubbers of the AB or ABA type or other types produced by anionic polymerization (A = Styrene, B = diene) or mixtures of the rubbers mentioned. Furthermore, the polystyrene can contain up to 40% by weight, preferably 5 to 25% by weight, of comonomers, such as acrylonitrile, α-methylstyrene or methyl methacrylate.
Halogenated hydrocarbons such as chlorinated paraffins, in particular bromine-containing hydrocarbons such as nonabromodiphenyl or hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), are suitable as flame retardants a). The latter is particularly preferably used in amounts of 0.5 to 7% by weight, based on the ready-to-use molding compound.
In particular, organic phosphites, optionally alkanopolyols, oligomers of di-alkylbenzenes, e.g. Dicumyl as described in (1).
The synergists c) for the flame retardant are common oxides of metals, in particular the Sb₂O₃ should be mentioned. They are only used if necessary for certain equipment. For example, when using HBCD, no synergist is used.
Of the alkane polyols, e.g. the pentaerythritol and of the phosphites the trisnonylphenyl phosphite. The UV stabilizers described in (1) can also be used together with the "thermal" stabilizers. The amounts for the stabilizers are in the range from 0.03 to 3% by weight, based on the molding composition.
(2).Antioxidants d) such as sterically hindered phenols can also be used in the amounts known to the person skilled in the art, cf. (2).
Known auxiliaries for processing, such as lubricants, mold release agents, also pigments, plasticizers, antistatic agents, UV stabilizers, blowing agents, fillers or reinforcing rubbers, can be used as additives e), provided that these are not considered to be impact-resistant polystyrene. Another agent f) which should not be mentioned is melted polystyrene (granules), which is used in particular for sealing the extruder used in the second process stage becomes. This non-melted polystyrene can be modified impact-resistant and can be used, among other things, to adjust a certain mechanism (impact resistance, etc.) of the end product. It can be introduced into the extruder immediately before, or together with, or shortly thereafter.
The procedure is explained in more detail below:
In the first mixing device (1st stage of the process), the entire amount of stabilizers b) or only parts thereof can be added to the flame retardant. Furthermore, the other agents c), d) and e) required in the formulation of the self-extinguishing molding compositions can be added in whole or in part. In general, the substances are introduced into the mixing device at room temperature. The temperature can rise to around 100 ° C as a result of frictional heat. The premixing can be carried out in batchwise or continuously operated mixing units, for example in stirred tanks, drum mixers, mixing tubes, mechanical intensive mixers, kneaders or extruders. Depending on the type and amount of the components, the mixture of the agents mentioned has a liquid, pasty or also powdery or granular consistency.
In a preferred embodiment of the process according to the invention, the flame retardants a), in particular HBCD, and the stabilizers b) are mixed immediately before the addition to the polymer melt and continuously fed to the mixing unit without being stored for a long time, in which they are combined with the melt. However, the premix can also be prepared separately and stored temporarily.
The mixing of the mixture of the flame retardant and the stabilizer with the hot polymer melt is carried out in conventional mixing units, preferably in mechanically agitated intensive mixers such as extruders or kneaders. Single-screw and in particular twin-screw extruders are suitable as extruders.
In the preferred embodiment, a twin-screw extruder is used to mix the premix with the polymer melt. In a very preferred embodiment, granulated styrene polymer is additionally fed in at the drive end of the extruder, generally in an amount of 3 to 50%, preferably 3 to 25%, in particular 5 to 15%, based on the total amount of the molding composition, and in the subsequent batch Part of the extruder - ie a first zone - melted at a temperature of preferably 160 to 220 ° C. The flame retardant and the stabilizers are added at the same point or, if appropriate, a few machine elements away from it. In another section of the extruder, The hot polystyrene melt is then fed to the other mixing zones. The temperature of this melt is generally 200 to 250 ° C. Other substances, such as lubricants such as mineral oil, can be added with the melt or in it or at other points in the extruder.
The temperature control along the extruder is regulated by external heating or cooling and adapted in such a way that the temperature is as low as possible without locally very high shear forces and thus excess temperatures due to excessively high viscosities.
The molten product is discharged from the extruder in a manner known per se, preferably through a nozzle head with a large number of outlet openings which are arranged in one or more rows or else in a ring. Appropriate shaping of the nozzle head must ensure that zones with an increased dwell time of the product are not present. In addition, the heating of the nozzle head is to be designed in such a way that no elevated temperatures occur locally.
The product threads emerging from the nozzle head are passed through a water bath in a known manner and then granulated into cylindrical grains in a knock-off machine. Other known granulating devices such as underwater cutting or hot cutting can also be used for the method according to the invention.
