Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for the filtration of organic solvent-containing liquors in dry cleaning. It also concerns filter aids used in the filtration of these fleets.
- filter cartridges are used for the filtration of the soiled cleaning liquors, the filtration result is significantly better.
- the cartridges of such filters contain activated carbon or mixtures of activated carbon and activated alumina (bentonite). Such substances not only have an exceptionally large surface area, but also show a good adsorption effect against loosened soiling. The cleaning liquors filtered with it are therefore significantly cleaner than those filtered through diatomaceous earth filters, so that the time of a subsequent distillation of the cleaning liquors can be delayed.
- Cartridge filters of this type are described, for example, in the current FCR information no. 174 of the Chemical Cleaning Research Center, published in July 1977.
- a disadvantage of such adsorption filters is the surfactant content of certain cleaning liquors.
- Such surfactants which originate, for example, from the predetach, are insufficiently adsorbed. This leads to an accumulation of pre-detaching agents and cleaning boosters in the cleaning liquors.
- the invention has for its object to largely free the solvents or solvent mixtures used in chemical cleaning by improved filtration of dissolved contaminants, odors and dyes, pre-detaching agents and cleaning boosters, so that distillation of the solvent is only necessary at large intervals.
- the invention therefore relates to a process for the filtration of organic solvent-containing liquors in dry cleaning using silicate filter aids, which is characterized in that natural and / or synthetic sheet silicates with an exchange capacity for cations not less than 30 meq / 100 g sheet silicate with or several ammonium compounds of the general formula (I) in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 represent hydrogen, alkyl or alkenyl groups or two or three of the radicals R 1 to R 4 , including the nitrogen atom, can be closed to form an aliphatic or aromatic heterocyclic ring system, where the respective Alkyl or alkenyl groups can be branched or unbranched and can contain cycloalkyl groups, aryl groups, ether bonds, amine bonds, amide bonds and ester bonds and can be substituted by hydroxyl groups or halide and have a number of C atoms in the range from 1 to 18 and the total number of C -Atoms in the cation is above 12 and
- the invention also relates to filter aids for use in the filtration of cleaning liquors from dry cleaning, which are characterized in that they are mixed with ammonium compounds of the above general formula (I) in an amount of 2 to 60% by weight, based on the total weight of the modified Layered silicates, prepared natural and / or synthetic layered silicates in combination with diatomaceous earth and / or activated carbon.
- silicate materials of natural and / or synthetic origin are suitable as layer silicates.
- mica-like sheet silicates with a three-layer structure from the group of the smectites are used, but vermiculite and the sodium phyllosilicates, which belong to the non-mica-like sheet silicates, are also suitable.
- the smectites include montmorillonite, saponite, beidellite and hectorite; Examples of phyllosilicates are kenyaite, magadiite, makatite and kanemite.
- Bentonites with a high content of montmorillonite or hectorite are preferably used, natural bentonites in untreated form or, if appropriate, in one with acids or alkalis for cleaning and removing interfering cations are used in a manner known per se pretreated.
- the most important parameter of the layered silicate materials that can be used is their exchange capacity for cations. According to the invention, this size should not be less than 30 meq / 100 g of layered silicate. Smectite clay minerals whose cation exchange capacity is between 50 and 120 meq / 100 g of layered silicate are particularly preferred.
- Natural and / or synthetic phyllosilicates with the above-mentioned properties are mixed according to methods known per se with one or more long-chain ammonium compounds of the above-mentioned general formula (I) in an amount of 2 to 60% by weight, based on the total weight of the modified phyllosilicate. prepared. This can be done, for example, by treating the corresponding silicates with solutions of the desired ammonium compounds and thereby achieving an exchange of alkali metal cations of the layered silicates for the ammonium cations.
- the layered silicates are preferably prepared with amounts of ammonium compounds in the range from 5 to 30% by weight, particularly preferably in the range from 10 to 25% by weight.
- the quaternary ammonium compounds are particularly preferred; that is, compounds in which none of the radicals R 1 to R 4 is hydrogen.
- the anion X - stands for anions of water-soluble acids with a dissociation constant above 10-5 , preferably for chloride, bromide, acetate, hydrogen sulfate or hydrogen phosphate, but especially for chloride.
- Lauryltrimethylammonium chloride and distearyldimethylammonium chloride have proven particularly useful for the preparation of natural and / or synthetic layered silicates.
- other quaternary ammonium sets for example containing aromatic radicals R, can also be used with advantage, such as, for example, cetyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride.
- Laurylpyridinium chloride is mentioned as an example of quaternary ammonium salts of the general formula (I), in which the organic radicals R, including the nitrogen atom, can be closed to form a heterocyclic ring system.
- the natural and / or synthetic layered silicates prepared with the ammonium compounds mentioned are used in the process according to the invention as feed for precoat or cartridge filters, cartridge filters being particularly preferred.
- the feed can either consist exclusively of the prepared layered silicates mentioned or, preferably, contain admixtures of conventional further filter aids, for example diatomaceous earth and / or activated carbon. If mixtures of diatomaceous earth / layered silicate or activated carbon / layered silicate are used, the mixing ratio of the components mentioned is 80:20 to 50:50, particularly preferably 70:30 to 50:50.
- the filter aids described are much more suitable for use in the process according to the invention for the filtration of liquors containing organic solvents in chemical cleaning than conventional adsorption filters which contain kieselguhr, activated carbon, zeolites or mixtures of these materials.
- the use of the filter aids mentioned has great advantages, in particular if trichlorethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, perchlorethylene, monofluorotrichloromethane, trifluorotrichloroethane or mixtures of the solvents mentioned are present as contaminated solvents in the cleaning liquors.
- the cleaning liquors can be almost completely freed from loosened dirt, odors and dyes, pre-detachment agents and cleaning enhancers.
- the distillation of the solvents which is often required according to conventional filtration processes, is only required much less frequently. This not only saves solvents, but also significantly reduces energy costs.
- the filter aids which consist of a mixture of layered silicate with diatomaceous earth or activated carbon, are always characterized by particularly universal cleaning properties.
- Example 1 As a comparison of Example 1 and Comparative Example 1 shows, the fatty acid content and the solids content of the cleaning liquor could be greatly reduced when the layered silicate loaded, the cleaning booster could even be completely removed from the liquor.
- the unloaded layered silicate showed worse results in all three cases.
- Example 2 shows that the filtration with the prepared layered silicate led to significantly better filtration results; the amount of dissolved impurities was only a fraction of the impurities after filtration with unprepared layered silicate.
- Example 3 Under the conditions described in Example 3, a precoat filter was used, which was charged with 70 g of diatomaceous earth and 30 g of powdered activated carbon. The results are shown in Table 1.
- a cleaning test liquor was prepared which contained trichlorethylene as the organic solvent, to which 10 g of tallow fatty acid were added per liter of organic solvent.
- the solvent was also colored strongly red by peeling off a textile naphthol color. It was pumped in circulation for two hours through a filter which was charged exclusively with a hectorite which contained lauryltrimethylammonium chloride as a quaternary ammonium compound in an amount of 5% by weight. After the filtration, samples were taken from the test liquor and examined for their fatty acid content and their color behavior. The results are shown in Table 3 below.

Description
The invention relates to a method for the filtration of organic solvent-containing liquors in dry cleaning. It also concerns filter aids used in the filtration of these fleets.
In dry cleaning, soiling of textiles and leather goods is replaced by cleaning liquors containing predominantly organic solvents. In order to be able to reuse the solvents, the detached contaminants, which are either dispersed or dissolved in the organic solvents, must be removed from them as completely as possible without any major changes in the composition of the cleaning liquors.
In such processes for cleaning solvents from dry cleaning, all filterable, i.e. undissolved impurities are removed from the solvent.
This usually happens in fifters that are loaded with diatomaceous earth. In such diatomaceous earth filters, however, only undissolved contaminants are filtered out of the cleaning liquors.
If filter cartridges (cartridge filters) are used for the filtration of the soiled cleaning liquors, the filtration result is significantly better. The cartridges of such filters contain activated carbon or mixtures of activated carbon and activated alumina (bentonite). Cartridge filters of this type are described, for example, in the current FCR information no. 174 of the Chemical Cleaning Research Center, published in July 1977.
WRP, Heft 6/1982, Seite 8 f).A disadvantage of such adsorption filters, however, is the surfactant content of certain cleaning liquors. Such surfactants, which originate, for example, from the predetach, are insufficiently adsorbed. This leads to an accumulation of pre-detaching agents and cleaning boosters in the cleaning liquors. So-called "edges" on thin textiles, such as lining fabrics or light outerwear, are the direct consequence (cf. WRP, issue 6/1982, page 8 f).
Clear improvements of the diatomaceous earth filters described above bring about the filters described in DE-OS-3 007 633, which consist entirely or partially of finely divided, water-insoluble alkali metal aluminum silicates (zeolites). Such zeolite filters are sometimes used in combination with diatomaceous earth filters and, above all, make it possible to remove traces of acid from the cleaning liquors. Distillation of the solvent mixtures is unavoidable due to the numerous dissolved contaminants.
The invention has for its object to largely free the solvents or solvent mixtures used in chemical cleaning by improved filtration of dissolved contaminants, odors and dyes, pre-detaching agents and cleaning boosters, so that distillation of the solvent is only necessary at large intervals.
The invention also relates to filter aids for use in the filtration of cleaning liquors from dry cleaning, which are characterized in that they are mixed with ammonium compounds of the above general formula (I) in an amount of 2 to 60% by weight, based on the total weight of the modified Layered silicates, prepared natural and / or synthetic layered silicates in combination with diatomaceous earth and / or activated carbon.
Numerous silicate materials of natural and / or synthetic origin are suitable as layer silicates. In the process according to the invention, in particular, mica-like sheet silicates with a three-layer structure from the group of the smectites are used, but vermiculite and the sodium phyllosilicates, which belong to the non-mica-like sheet silicates, are also suitable. The smectites include montmorillonite, saponite, beidellite and hectorite; Examples of phyllosilicates are kenyaite, magadiite, makatite and kanemite. Bentonites with a high content of montmorillonite or hectorite are preferably used, natural bentonites in untreated form or, if appropriate, in one with acids or alkalis for cleaning and removing interfering cations are used in a manner known per se pretreated.
The most important parameter of the layered silicate materials that can be used is their exchange capacity for cations. According to the invention, this size should not be less than 30 meq / 100 g of layered silicate. Smectite clay minerals whose cation exchange capacity is between 50 and 120 meq / 100 g of layered silicate are particularly preferred.
Natural and / or synthetic phyllosilicates with the above-mentioned properties are mixed according to methods known per se with one or more long-chain ammonium compounds of the above-mentioned general formula (I) in an amount of 2 to 60% by weight, based on the total weight of the modified phyllosilicate. prepared. This can be done, for example, by treating the corresponding silicates with solutions of the desired ammonium compounds and thereby achieving an exchange of alkali metal cations of the layered silicates for the ammonium cations. The layered silicates are preferably prepared with amounts of ammonium compounds in the range from 5 to 30% by weight, particularly preferably in the range from 10 to 25% by weight.
Ammonium compounds of the general formula (I), the total number of C atoms of which is in the range from 14 to 38, have proven particularly useful for the process according to the invention for the filtration of liquors from dry cleaning. Of these, the quaternary ammonium compounds are particularly preferred; that is, compounds in which none of the radicals R 1 to R 4 is hydrogen. In accordance with a further preferred embodiment, compounds in which at least two of the organic radicals R are for an alkyl radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms and one or two of the organic radicals R for an alkyl radical with 9 to There are 18 carbon atoms. The anion X - stands for anions of water-soluble acids with a dissociation constant above 10-5 , preferably for chloride, bromide, acetate, hydrogen sulfate or hydrogen phosphate, but especially for chloride. Lauryltrimethylammonium chloride and distearyldimethylammonium chloride have proven particularly useful for the preparation of natural and / or synthetic layered silicates. However, other quaternary ammonium sets, for example containing aromatic radicals R, can also be used with advantage, such as, for example, cetyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride. Laurylpyridinium chloride is mentioned as an example of quaternary ammonium salts of the general formula (I), in which the organic radicals R, including the nitrogen atom, can be closed to form a heterocyclic ring system.
The natural and / or synthetic layered silicates prepared with the ammonium compounds mentioned are used in the process according to the invention as feed for precoat or cartridge filters, cartridge filters being particularly preferred. The feed can either consist exclusively of the prepared layered silicates mentioned or, preferably, contain admixtures of conventional further filter aids, for example diatomaceous earth and / or activated carbon. If mixtures of diatomaceous earth / layered silicate or activated carbon / layered silicate are used, the mixing ratio of the components mentioned is 80:20 to 50:50, particularly preferably 70:30 to 50:50.
The filter aids described are much more suitable for use in the process according to the invention for the filtration of liquors containing organic solvents in chemical cleaning than conventional adsorption filters which contain kieselguhr, activated carbon, zeolites or mixtures of these materials. The use of the filter aids mentioned has great advantages, in particular if trichlorethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, perchlorethylene, monofluorotrichloromethane, trifluorotrichloroethane or mixtures of the solvents mentioned are present as contaminated solvents in the cleaning liquors. The cleaning liquors can be almost completely freed from loosened dirt, odors and dyes, pre-detachment agents and cleaning enhancers. The distillation of the solvents, which is often required according to conventional filtration processes, is only required much less frequently. This not only saves solvents, but also significantly reduces energy costs. The filter aids, which consist of a mixture of layered silicate with diatomaceous earth or activated carbon, are always characterized by particularly universal cleaning properties.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples.
Were dispersed in 10 l of deionized water in a stirred container and heated to 60.degree. A clear, thixotropic gel was formed. With vigorous stirring, 425 g of Dehyquart LT (lauryltrimethylammonium chloride in water, approx. 35% active substance, from Henkel) were slowly added, the organically modified hectorite flocculating. To complete the reaction, stirring was continued for 30 minutes. The organically modified hectorite was filtered off on a suction filter, washed with 2 l of deionized water and dried at 75 ° C. in a forced-air drying cabinet. The product had a carbon content of 17.3%, corresponding to approximately 27% lauryltrimethylammonium chloride.
A cleaning liquor, the organic solvent component of which was trifluorotrichloroethane, contained 5 g per liter of tallow fatty acid and an anionic cleaning booster which had the following composition:
- 40% sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate,
- 10% potassium petrol sulfonate,
- 10% isopropanol,
- 20% spindle oil and
- 20% water.
The cleaning booster was dissolved in an amount of 7 g per liter of cleaning liquor.
To determine the adsorption of fatty acids and cleaning enhancers, the cleaning liquor was pumped in a circuit through a cartridge filter, which as a filter aid consists of a mixture
- 60% granular activated carbon (particle diameter 1.5 mm) and
- Contained 40% of a prepared layered silicate.
The layered silicate was a hectorite which was loaded with 27% by weight lauryl trimethyl ammonium chloride.
After two hours of filtration, a sample of the cleaned liquor was taken and the fatty acid content and the residual solids content were determined. The results are shown in Table 1.

- Contained 40% unloaded hectorite. A liquor sample was taken under the same conditions as in Example 1 and the content of fatty acid and solids was determined. The results are shown in Table 1.
As a comparison of Example 1 and Comparative Example 1 shows, the fatty acid content and the solids content of the cleaning liquor could be greatly reduced when the layered silicate loaded, the cleaning booster could even be completely removed from the liquor. The unloaded layered silicate showed worse results in all three cases.

- 15% alkanolamide;
- 15% butyl glycol;
- 15% white oil and
- 20% water.
- 20 % Bentonit
beschickt war. Das Schichtsilikat war mit 60 Gew.-% Distearyldimethylammoniumchlorid beladen.Such a cleaning liquor was, as described in Example 1, pumped through a filter in a circuit for two hours, the filter aid comprising a mixture of
- 80% activated carbon and
- 20% bentonite
was loaded. The layered silicate was loaded with 60% by weight of distearyldimethylammonium chloride.
After the filtration was completed, a sample was taken from the liquor to determine the content of fatty acid, cleaning enhancer and solid substance. The results are shown in Table 1.
- 80% activated carbon and
- Contained 20% unloaded bentonite as a filtration aid.
Under the same test conditions as in Example 2, samples were taken from the cleaning liquor after the filtration to determine the components mentioned in Example 2; the results are shown in Table 1.
A comparison of Example 2 with Comparative Example 2 shows that the filtration with the prepared layered silicate led to significantly better filtration results; the amount of dissolved impurities was only a fraction of the impurities after filtration with unprepared layered silicate.
- 30 % Laurylpyridiniumchlorid:
- 15 % Isopropanol;
- 15 % Butylglycol;
- 20 % Perchlorethylen und
- 20 % Wasser.
A heavily soiled and discolored sample of the cleaning liquor was taken from a cleaning system operated as usual, which was additionally enriched with 8 g oleic acid and 5 g of a cleaning amplifier composed as described below per liter of cleaning liquor:
- 30% lauryl pyridinium chloride:
- 15% isopropanol;
- 15% butyl glycol;
- 20% perchlorethylene and
- 20% water.
The cleaning liquor mainly contained perchlorethylene as the organic solvent component.
The cleaning liquor was filtered in a circuit for 45 min. A precoat candle filter (laboratory version) was used
- 70 g of diatomaceous earth and
- 30 g of montmorillonite, prepared with 15% by weight of benzylcetyldimethylammonium chloride.
Before and after the filtration, a sample of the liquor was taken to determine the fatty acid content, the cleaning booster content and the solids content; the staining of the liquor samples was also examined (Lovibond method (red or yellow tones), (1 inch cuvette). The results are shown in Table 1.
Under the same conditions as in Example 3, a precoat filter was used for the filtration, which was charged with 100 g of diatomaceous earth. The results are shown in Table 1.
Under the conditions described in Example 3, a precoat filter was used, which was charged with 70 g of diatomaceous earth and 30 g of powdered activated carbon. The results are shown in Table 1.
- 25 % Dodecylbenzolsulfonat (Triethanolaminsalz):
- 15 % Cetylstearylalkohol + 10 EO;
- 15 % Ethylenglycol;
- 30 % Mineralöl und
- 15 % Wasser.
- 25% dodecylbenzenesulfonate (triethanolamine salt):
- 15% cetylstearyl alcohol + 10 EO;
- 15% ethylene glycol;
- 30% mineral oil and
- 15% water.
In order to enable a comparison of the solvent quality and the quality of the cleaning process brought about by this solvent, the solvent was cleaned on the one hand by means of a filter consisting of a filter aid
- 50% activated carbon and
- 50% of a layered silicate, loaded with 18% lauryl pyridinium chloride,
was loaded, on the other hand for comparison via a filter that with
- 50% activated carbon and
- 50% of the same layered silicate
was charged, but which contained no addition of a quaternary ammonium compound. The cleaning liquors were distilled out after the last batch.
In contrast, the solvent state is good in the process according to the invention and the items to be cleaned turn out perfectly. Distillation of the cleaning liquor filtered by the process according to the invention would not have been necessary at this point in time.
A cleaning test liquor was prepared which contained trichlorethylene as the organic solvent, to which 10 g of tallow fatty acid were added per liter of organic solvent. The solvent was also colored strongly red by peeling off a textile naphthol color.
- 70% diatomaceous earth and
- 30% powdered activated carbon
was loaded. After the filtering time had elapsed, samples were taken from the cleaning liquor and evaluated in comparison with the original sample. The results are shown in Table 3 below.
Result: The considerable reduction in the fatty acid and especially the dye content clearly shows the advantages of the process according to the invention.
