Description

"GOODS DISPLAY ARRANGEMENT AND PACKAGE THEREFOR
This invention relates to a display arrangement for goods and more particularly to a package for use in such arrangement.
5 BACKGROUND ART
A conventional form of display stand or rack comprises a hardboard panel, or similar sheet material, e.g. steel or plywood etc. mounted upright within a support frame which is free-standing upon a floor. Such panels, commonly known as
10 pegboards are perforated with a pattern of holes arranged in multiple rows with a spacing between holes of each row of
25 mm. The holes of the rows may be vertically aligned or staggered so that the spacing between holes in each column is 25 mm or 50 mm, respectively. Support lugs or clips, for
15 goods on display are hung from a selected pair of adjacent holes in a row. Common forms of packages are various sizes of skin packs, blister packs, poly bags and window-faced boxes, and presently they are provided with a slot adjacent their top edge for hanging upon a support clip.
20 This arrangement leads to a haphazard display which is far fro eye-appealing and results in much wastage of display space. For instance, due to the various odd shapes and dimensions utilized in the packages as much as 50% of the available display space on the pegboard is wasted.
25 Furthermore, the weight of and/or rough handling of these packages often leads to breaking out of the support slot at the top edge, and also advertising or descriptive text which lies beneath the clip is frequently concealed thereby.
The present invention has been made possible by the
30 realization that by taking advantage of the universal spacing of the pegboard perforations and designing the overall sizes of goods packages to conform strictly to a modular form, a greatly improved display is achieved which has enhanced appearance, involves a minimum of waste of
35 available space, and is easy to maintain and restock.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a package which will enable the above advantages to be obtained.
DJC/126r To this end, the invention in one general form comprises a goods display package having a rectangular base portion, at least one aperture in said base portion for hanging the package from a hook attached to a pegboard
5 provided with holes arranged in rows and columns with said rows of said columns being equally spaced from each other by 25 nun, said aperture or apertures being positioned on said package a predetermined distance at least 25 mm from the top of the package and symmetrically with respect to the sides
10 thereof, and said package having a width and height of dimensions determined by the following formula: = n x 25 ii - 2 K
2 h = n x 25 mm - K
Where:
15 w = the dimension of the width of said package h = the dimension of the height of said package n = any whole number
K = a constant of value between 2 mm and 6 mm and
2 20 K = a constant of value between 0 and 25 mm.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
The invention will be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings which show a preferred embodiment of the invention, and in which:
25 Fig. 1 shows by fragmentary diagram an improved goods display achieved by practicing the present invention.
Fig. 2 depicts to a larger scale portion of the display; and.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the display loaded
30 with stock represented in phantom outline
BEST MODE OF CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
The drawings show a vertically mounted pegboard 1 supported by a frame 2 having a pair of stiles 3 supporting a top rail 4. The pegboard 1 is provided with a plurality
35 of holes 5 arranged in rows 6 and columns 7 with adjacent holes in each row or column being spaced apart by 25 mm.
The holes 5 in all rows 6 may be vertically aligned to form straight columns 7 or the rows 6 may be alternately staggered to form a diamond pattern (not shown) and zig-zag columns 7. In either event the columns 7 are spaced apart by 25 mm as are, too, the rows 6. It will be observed that the holes arranged in the uppermost row 6 are also spaced by
25 mm from the top rail 4, while the extreme end columns 7
5 are spaced from the stiles 3 also by 25 mm. What has been described is conventional practice in the provision of floor-mounted display frames, or stands. Support clips (not shown) having horizontally extending arms may be clipped into any pair of holes 5 in a row 6 to support packages of
10 goods on display.
By this invention all packages 8 provided for mounting upon the display stand 2 are provided with a rectangular cardboard base portion 9 having an aperture 10 spaced from its top edge by at least 25 mm. The term "rectangular" is
15 used in a general sense to cover also square-shape. Each aperture 10 is in the form of a slot only slightly longer than the width of the protruding arm 11 on the support clip 12. In many instances the arm of the support clip 12 lies at a level approximately 12 mm below the level of the
20 holes 5 into which the clip is engaged. Thus, in most circumstance the aperture 10 will be spaced from the top of the package 8 by approximately 37 mm. In such an instance the top of the uppermost package 8 on the stand 2 will correspond with the rail 4.
25 The packages 8 may be of any type, i.e. a skinpack, a blisterpack (as shown in Fig. 2,) a polybag (as shown in Fig. 3,) or a window-faced box, but in each instance will be provided with a rectangular base portion 9, including the aperture 10 together with the remainder of the base 30 portion 9 beneath the aperture 10 being composed also of cardboard or a depending plastic envelope 9A (Fig. 3) stapled to the upper part of the base portion 9. The dimensions specified below refer to the extreme outside dimensions of the package 8 irrespective of its form. 35 Whether there is a single or multiple apertures 10 they will be positioned on the package 8 in symmetrical array with respect to the sides thereof as shown in the drawing.
It will be realized that in practice a plurality of packages 8 of identical size as shown in Fig. 3 will be positioned one behind the other upon the support clip, or clips 12. By this invention it is intended that very little vertical spacing between packages 8 stored on the stand 2 will be provided for space conservation. A spacing of
5 between 2 mm and 5 mm seems ideal. However, limited spacing in a horizontal plane between packages 8 is provided to allow for insertion of the fingers of a customer for removal of the outermost package 8 upon any support clip 12. In practice it has been found that approximately 4 mm will
10 suffice as horizontal spacing between packages 8 upon adjacent clips 12, but a spacing of anything more than 12 mm becomes excessive and leads to considerable wastage of available space. Consequently, the invention relies upon the provision of packages 8 having an overall width and
15 height of dimensions which are to be determined by the following formula: w = n 25 mm - 2 K
2 h = n 25 mm - K where:
20 w = the dimension of the width of said package h = the dimension of the height of said package n = any whole number
K = a constant of value between 2 mm and
6 mm
25 and
2 K = a constant of value between 0 and 25 mm.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY
It will be noted that due to the low-down positioning of the apertures 10 in each package β there is far less
30 tendency for the cardboard base portion 9 to tear when subjected to rough treatment. Also, the space provided above the aperture 10 is ideally suited for the display of advertising and technical descriptive matter which is unobscured by the projecting arm of the support clip. The
35 entire artwork may be confined to the area above the aperture 10 with the area below the aperture 10 being devoted entirely to packaging of the goods.
The eye-appeal and convenience to the customer of the display is enhanced if the stand 2 is arbitrarily divided into separate areas, or separate stands 2 are provided, for display of individually coloured base portions 9 or packages
8.
For example, if the goods on display are builders hardware,
5 those relating to locks may be coloured say green, those relating to security hardware may be coloured say yellow, those relating to hinges and brackets may be coloured say red, and those relating to miscellaneous hardware may be coloured say blue.
10 Whereas a preferred embodiment has been described in the foregoing passages it should be understood that other forms, refinements and modifications are feasible within the scope of this invention. For example, the principles of this invention may be applied with advantage to vending
15 racks.
