Definitions
- the invention relates to a four-cylinder engine with extended expansion according to the preamble of claim 1.
- the engine according to the main patent shows the advantage that, since the exhaust gases burn during post-expansion, the exhaust gases leaving the engine are low in pollutants.
- the engine according to the main patent has the advantage that additional energy is obtained by the afterburning of the exhaust gases, whereas the residual energy of the exhaust gases is chemically destroyed in a catalytic converter.
- the exhaust ports of the cylinders operating according to the four-stroke principle are connected to the intake ports of the cylinders used for post-combustion by channels provided in the cylinder head.
- This design has the advantage that the channels can be kept very short, so that the exhaust gases leaving the cylinders working according to the four-stroke principle act directly on the pistons in the cylinders working according to the two-stroke principle.
- the object of the present invention is to provide measures which make it possible to convert any commercially available four-cylinder engine into an engine with the effect according to the main patent.
- the solution is based on the following train of thought:
- the fact that the connecting channels between the cylinders working according to the four-stroke principle and the cylinders used for afterburning and post-expansion lead out of the cylinder block can no longer be kept short.
- the exhaust gases therefore reach the cylinders used for post-combustion with a considerable time delay. This will reduce engine performance. Therefore, the invention provides that the exhaust gases expelled from a cylinder operating according to the four-stroke principle are not passed directly into one of the cylinders used for post-expansion, but first into at least one intermediate store, which the post-burned exhaust gases only leave after a working cycle of the cylinder operating according to the four-stroke principle has been skipped .
- valves for controlling the outlet of the cylinders operating according to the four-stroke principle are loaded with greater pressure differences than is usually the case because the pressure of the stored exhaust gases also acts on the valve plates.
- This disadvantage can be remedied by a special valve design, as has been shown in the description of the drawing.
- the cylinders 1 and 4 serve as working cylinders, ie they work in a known manner according to the four-stroke principle.
- the cylinders 2 and 3 are used for the post-combustion of the exhaust gases coming from the cylinders 1 and 4. They work after the two-stroke principle.
- the cylinders 1 and 4 are connected via inlet valves 14 and 15 to a feed line 16 for the fuel-air mixture. If the piston 5 moves downward, it sucks in the fuel-air mixture, while the combustion takes place in the cylinder 4 above the piston 8: the cylinders 1 and 4 are via exhaust valves 20 and 21 and pipe sections 52, 53 with intermediate stores 50 , 51 (FIG. 2) connected or via pipe sections 62, 63 with buffers 60, 61 according to FIG. 3.
- the cylinders 2 and 3 are also communicatively connected to one another by a recess 56 in the cylinder block.
- the exhaust valves 22, 23 of the cylinders 2 and 3 let the exhaust gases escaping from the cylinders 2 and 3 pass into the exhaust pipe 24.
- the cylinder 4 operates in a corresponding manner. If it expels the exhaust gases from the cylinder, these pass through the valve 21 into the intermediate store 51, where they remain during the intake stroke of the cylinder 4. Only when the piston 8 of the cylinder 4 compresses the fuel-air mixture, the valve 18 opens and allows the exhaust gases to flow into the space above the piston 6, so that the latter is pressed down. At the same time, the exhaust gases flow into the cylinder 3 via the recesses 56 and trigger the same effect here. Each time the pistons 6 and 7 of the cylinders 2 and 3 move upward, one of the valves 22 or 23 of the cylinders 2 and 3 opens and allows the exhaust gases to enter the exhaust via the intermediate piece 24.
- the buffers 50 and 51 alternately record the exhaust gases from cylinders 1 and 4 and transfer them alternately to cylinders 2 and 3.
- the usual valve control of the in-line engine can be used to control this process.
- the intermediate stores 50 and 51 are screwed onto the side of the engine block 70. They advantageously consist of two cast parts 50 ', 50 "and 51', 51", between each of which a seal 57 is arranged. The parts 50 ', 50 "and 51', 51” are firmly connected to one another, advantageously with the aid of screws 58.
- each intermediate memory 50 or 51 corresponds approximately to the intake volume of a cylinder, so that the exhaust gas pressure is maintained in the buffers.
- FIG. 3 shows an embodiment of the engine with an ignition sequence 1, 2, 4, 3.
- the exhaust gases expelled from the cylinder 1 via the valve 20 reach the buffer store 60 via the pipe section 62. They remain here again during the intake stroke of the cylinder 1 and are then let into cylinders 2 and 3 via valve 18 when piston 5 of cylinder 1 compresses the inducted fuel-air mixture.
- the exhaust gases are pressed into the intermediate store 61 via the outlet valve 21 and the pipe section 63. They remain here during the intake stroke of the cylinder 4 and are then admitted into the cylinders 2 and 3 via the valve 19 when the piston 8 of the cylinder 4 compresses the intake air / fuel mixture.
- the exhaust gases in cylinders 2 and 3, as described in FIG. 2, push pistons 6 and 7 downward, respectively.
- the exhaust gases are then pressed into the exhaust via the exhaust valves 22, 23.
- the buffers 60, 61 are kept shorter. For this purpose, they have a larger diameter than the intermediate stores 50, 51 in order to in turn obtain a volume for each intermediate store which approximately corresponds to the intake volume of one of the cylinders.
- the buffers 60 and 61 are arranged on the same side of the engine block 70. They in turn consist of two castings 65 'and 65 "which are connected to one another with the interposition of a seal.
- Fig. 3 shows that the arrangement of the intermediate memory 60, 61 is structurally more favorable than the arrangement of the intermediate memories 50, 51 according to FIG. 2. This more favorable design can also be achieved with the engine according to FIG. 2 if the ignition sequence is changed by a suitable change in the camshaft.
- FIG. 4 shows a diagram of the degree of filling of the intermediate stores as a function of the cycles I to IV of the cylinders operating according to the four-cycle principle.
- the first memory is filled according to the solid line during the first bar, the filling is retained during the second bar.
- the buffer is emptied during the third cycle and remains empty during the fourth cycle. This process is repeated in the subsequent measures.
- the second buffer is filled according to the dotted line during the third bar and remains filled during the fourth bar. It empties during the next bar to remain empty during the bar afterwards. This means that the filling and emptying of the two buffers overlap, because if one buffer is filled, the other is emptied. This fact can be used to combine the two required buffers into a double storage.
- the common store 30 is separated into the required individual stores by a sliding partition between the inlets and outlets of the cylinders working in pairs.
- a displaceable piston 36 is arranged in the double accumulator 30.
- the piston 36 slides with its central part 37 on the inner wall of the intermediate storage 30 and can be sealed against this wall by inserted piston rings 38.
- the ends 41 and 42 of the piston 36 have Paragraphs 47, 48 so that they always leave the inlet and outlet openings 43, 44 of the exhaust gases coming from the cylinders 1 and 4 and the outlet openings 45, 46 to the cylinders 2 and 3.
- the intermediate store 30 does the same as the intermediate store pairs 50, 51 and 60, 61 of FIGS. 2 and 3.
- a common buffer 70 is provided, the inlet and outlet openings 43, 45 and 44, 46 to the pairs working together cylinders 1, 2; 4, 3 are separated from one another by a corrugated membrane 71 (aneroid membrane).
- the membrane can bend in the direction of arrow 72, whereby the same is achieved during operation of the engine as by the oscillating piston 41 of FIG. 5.
- a membrane 73 in the manner of a sheet metal strip winding 66 of finite thickness is provided in the intermediate storage 72 according to FIG. 7, in which the sheet metal strips are arranged between two shells 67 and 68.
- This membrane shows a beneficial spring effect.
- valves 18, 19, 20 and 21 therefore have, in a further embodiment of the invention, as shown for the valve 20 in FIG. 8, two valve plates, namely a plate 76 directed towards the cylinder and a second valve plate 78, which is bent above the Outlet pipe 52 is arranged.
- the plunger 79 is narrowed between the plates 76 and 78, i.e. it shows an annular indentation 80 which is part of an arc in cross section.
- the diameter of the valve plate 78 is kept smaller than the diameter of the valve plate 76 in a further embodiment of the invention, so that the valve including the tappet the outlet opening of the cylinder can be pushed.
- the inlet and outlet of the fuel-air mixture and the exhaust gases into the individual cylinders can be controlled from a conventional camshaft.
- the engine according to the invention also offers the possibility of providing two additional cams on the camshaft, which temporarily open the valves 20 and 21 in FIG. 1, so that the exhaust gases present in the intermediate stores 30 or 50, 51 or 60, 61 enter the cylinders 1 and 4 can strike back. This gives an engine with partial recirculation of the exhaust gases.
- an oxygen carrier can be injected into the intermediate stores 30, 50, 51, 60, 61 via a nozzle 40.
- the injection takes place shortly before they are completely filled.
- the combustion itself takes place in the closed storage.
- the principle of the engine according to the invention can advantageously also be used in engines operated with diesel fuel.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a four-cylinder engine with extended expansion according to the preamble of
The engine according to the main patent shows the advantage that, since the exhaust gases burn during post-expansion, the exhaust gases leaving the engine are low in pollutants. In comparison with an engine, which is followed by a catalytic converter, the engine according to the main patent has the advantage that additional energy is obtained by the afterburning of the exhaust gases, whereas the residual energy of the exhaust gases is chemically destroyed in a catalytic converter.
In the engine according to the main patent, the exhaust ports of the cylinders operating according to the four-stroke principle are connected to the intake ports of the cylinders used for post-combustion by channels provided in the cylinder head. This design has the advantage that the channels can be kept very short, so that the exhaust gases leaving the cylinders working according to the four-stroke principle act directly on the pistons in the cylinders working according to the two-stroke principle.
However, it was found that if you want to convert an existing commercially available four-cylinder engine, be it a four-cylinder in-line engine or a boxer engine, to an engine according to the main patent, there is often no space for the introduction of the channels in the cylinder head or this possibility at all does not exist.
The object of the present invention is to provide measures which make it possible to convert any commercially available four-cylinder engine into an engine with the effect according to the main patent.
This object is achieved by the characterizing feature of
The solution is based on the following train of thought: The fact that the connecting channels between the cylinders working according to the four-stroke principle and the cylinders used for afterburning and post-expansion lead out of the cylinder block can no longer be kept short. The exhaust gases therefore reach the cylinders used for post-combustion with a considerable time delay. This temporary storage of the exhaust gases during one work cycle achieves the same effect as with the engine according to the main patent. The inlet and outlet of the exhaust gases into and out of the at least one intermediate store can take place through the valves provided anyway for the inlet and outlet openings of the cylinders. Each of the cylinders operating according to the four-stroke principle is assigned a separate intermediate store, which are expediently combined to form double stores.
In the embodiment according to the invention, the valves for controlling the outlet of the cylinders operating according to the four-stroke principle are loaded with greater pressure differences than is usually the case because the pressure of the stored exhaust gases also acts on the valve plates. This disadvantage can be remedied by a special valve design, as has been shown in the description of the drawing.

Therods 1 and 4 work with a 360 ° phase shift to each other, thecylinders 2 and 3 are offset from thecylinders 1 and 4 in phase by 180 °, so that the pistons 6 and 7 are always in the bottom dead center position when the Pistons 5 and 8 reach top dead center.cylinders
The
The
- If the piston 5 of the
cylinder 1 pushes the exhaust gases into theintermediate store 50 via thevalve 20, then the exhaust gases remain in theintermediate store 50 during the subsequent intake stroke of thecylinder 1. Only when the piston 5 in thecylinder 1 contains the intake air / fuel mixture compressed, opens thevalve 19 and allows the combustion gases to flow from theintermediate store 50 into thecylinder 3 via thevalve 19. At this time, the piston 7 is in the top dead center position in thecylinder 3. It is pushed down by the inflowing exhaust gases. At the same time, the exhaust gases flow About therecesses 56 in thecylinder 2, in which the piston 6 is also currently in the top dead center position, and also press this piston down.
The
The
The same applies to the
Fig. 3 shows that the arrangement of the
Diese Tatsache kann dazu benutzt werden, die zwei erforderlichen Zwischenspeicher zu einem Doppelspeicher zusammenzufassen.FIG. 4 shows a diagram of the degree of filling of the intermediate stores as a function of the cycles I to IV of the cylinders operating according to the four-cycle principle. The first memory is filled according to the solid line during the first bar, the filling is retained during the second bar. The buffer is emptied during the third cycle and remains empty during the fourth cycle. This process is repeated in the subsequent measures. The second buffer is filled according to the dotted line during the third bar and remains filled during the fourth bar. It empties during the next bar to remain empty during the bar afterwards. This means that the filling and emptying of the two buffers overlap, because if one buffer is filled, the other is emptied. This fact can be used to combine the two required buffers into a double storage.
The
- If the
cylinder 1 discharges the exhaust gases, then these enter the left part of theintermediate store 30 via theinlet opening 43 and press on theshoulder 47. In this way, they move thepiston 41 in the direction ofarrow 49 to the right until itsend 64 is on the right inner wall of theintermediate storage 30 is present. During this movement, thepiston 41 presses the exhaust gases located to the right of it via the outlet opening 46 into thecylinder 3 which serves for post-expansion. The exhaust gases located to the left of thepiston 41 remain there until the subsequent work cycle of the cylinders operating according to the four-cycle principle has taken place. Then thecylinder 4 presses its exhaust gases via the inlet opening 44 into the right-hand part of the intermediate store. The exhaust gases press on theshoulder 48 of thepiston 41 and move it to the left. The exhaust gases located to the left of thepiston 41 are now pressed through the outlet opening 45 into thecylinder 2 which serves for post-expansion.
Since the
Since there is a relatively strong pressure in each intermediate store, which acts on the exhaust valves of
Since the valve is usually mounted in the direction of
The inlet and outlet of the fuel-air mixture and the exhaust gases into the individual cylinders can be controlled from a conventional camshaft. The engine according to the invention also offers the possibility of providing two additional cams on the camshaft, which temporarily open the
In order to improve the post-combustion of the exhaust gases, an oxygen carrier can be injected into the
Instead of the design of the engine according to the invention as a four-cylinder engine with communication of the
The principle of the engine according to the invention can advantageously also be used in engines operated with diesel fuel.
