Definitions
- Pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) is produced on an industrial scale using two different processes.
- 1,2,4,5-tetraalkyl-benzene or 2,4,5-trialkyl-benzaldehydes are reacted with nitric acid or oxygen-containing gases using metal catalysts containing halogen.
- This does not give the desired dianhydride, but rather the free acid which has to be dehydrated to the dianhydride in a subsequent process step. This additional process step and significant corrosion problems make these processes expensive and less attractive.
- the 1,2,4,5-tetraalkylbenzenes are passed together with air in the gas phase over a heterogeneous catalyst and the dianhydride is sublimated when the reaction gas cools.
- the reaction gas according to DE-PS 23 62 659 is cooled after cooling to a temperature which is above the condensation temperature of the PMDA on cooled and thermostated surfaces, the PMDA desubliming. The temperature of the cooling surfaces must be below the condensation temperature of the PMDA, but above the condensation temperature of the by-products.
- the large dwell time of the gas mixture in the condensation zone would also mean that the dimensions of the apparatus would not be technically manageable when the process was transferred to the PMDA production, and the very large amounts of exhaust gas would make sensible purification of the exhaust gas impossible. This method is therefore not applicable to PMDA production.
- the object of the present invention was therefore to develop a process for the production of PMDA according to the gas phase process, in which the three process steps of oxidation of the feed product to PMDA, desublimation and exhaust gas processing are designed and connected to one another in such a way that the amount of gas required per unit of PMDA overall is not, or only insignificantly, greater than the amount of gas required for the oxidation of the starting material.
- This object is achieved in that the desublimation of the PMDA is carried out using a cold gas, the by-products present in the exhaust gas of the desublimation are catalytically burned and part of the exhaust gas from the catalytic combustion the by-products are fed back to the main reactor for the production of PMDA so that a closed gas circuit is formed, while the other part of the exhaust gas from the combustion of the by-products is released into the atmosphere and / or is returned to the desublimation stage to form a second closed gas circuit.
- the process according to the invention has the advantage that the desublimation of the PMDA can be carried out directly with a cooling gas without increasing the amount of gas required for the total process per unit of PMDA. This simplifies the Gaaamt process, makes it more reliable and, although it uses a cooling device for desublimation, cheaper. Since part of the exhaust gas from the catalytic combustion can be returned to the desoblimation, the OAS requirement for the overall process can be reduced even further. Another advantage of the method is that the exhaust gas from the catalytic combustion is so clean is that it can be released directly into the atmosphere and there is no high chimney.
- Hot air which originates from the cyclic process, is fed into the reactor (3) via line (1) (FIG. 1).
- tetraalkyl-benzene is injected into the hot air via line (2).
- the temperature of the air can fluctuate over a very wide range, but it should be above the condensation point of the feed material in the air.
- the tetraalkyl-benzene can be injected into the air stream in liquid form, but it can also be converted into the gaseous state and then mixed with the air.
- the ratio of feed to air depends on the catalyst used and the desired temperature and flow conditions in the catalyst bed. As a rule, the weight ratio will be approx. 0.05 - 0.25: 1.
- the substituents in the 1,2,4,5-positions of benzene are not restricted to alkyl groups, but other substituents are also possible, provided that they expand a carbon atom which is located directly on the benzene ring and form carboxylic anhydrides under the reaction conditions. Because of the large number of possible connections, it must be checked in individual cases whether the connections are suitable for the process. The air can with this The method can also be replaced by oxygen which, with others, does not interfere with the oxidation reaction, desublimation and catalytic exhaust gas combustion, such as. B. carbon dioxide and water vapor is diluted. When using other dilution gases for oxygen instead of nitrogen, it must be checked in individual cases whether the gas does not interfere in the subsequent steps of the cycle. Air is particularly preferred as the cycle gas.
- the reaction gas which contains PMDA and a number of by-products, is cooled via line (4) in the heat exchanger (5) to a temperature just above the condensation point of the PMDA in the reaction gas.
- the condensation point itself depends on the concentration of the PMDA in the reaction gas, which in turn depends on the loading of the air with tetraalkylbenzene in front of the reactor (3) and the reaction conditions in the reactor (3).
- the precooled reaction gas is cooled in the desublimator (6) by mixing with a cool gas (7) to a temperature which is below the condensation point of the PMDA and above the condensation points of the by-products.
- the desublimation temperature to be set depends on the concentration of the PMDA in the reaction gas, the cooling gas, the desired degree of separation for PMDA and the type and amount of by-products in the reaction gas.
- For the cooling of the reaction gas there are gases which do not react with the PMDA under the de-sublimation conditions and which do not interfere with the subsequent catalytic afterburning and with the oxidation of the PMDA raw material. Oxygen-containing gases are preferred, since in this way the oxygen required for PMDA production can be introduced into the cycle, e.g. B.
- Air is particularly preferred as the cooling gas. It can also be advantageous to use oxygen-containing exhaust gases from other production plants if they contain substances that can be burned in the catalytic afterburning and do not interfere with desublimation, such as, for. B. low-boiling hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. At the same time, the use of these exhaust gases alleviates the exhaust gas problem of the corresponding production plant.
- the amount of cooling gas required depends on the desired desublimation temperature and the temperature of the cooling gas. It should be kept as small as possible in order not to have to move large amounts of gas. The temperature of the cooling gas must of course be below the desublimation temperature selected.
- the ratio of cooling gas to reaction gas is usually 0.4 - 1.5: 1 and particularly preferably approx. l: 1.
- the PMDA deaublimated in the desublimator (6) is separated from the gas with the aid of the filter (9) and discharged via the line (8).
- the gas which still contains all the by-products, is brought to a temperature q in the heat exchanger (10) which is sufficient to start the catalytic and adiabatic combustion of the by-products in the reactor (11).
- the exhaust gas from the reactor (11) is usually so clean that after recovery of the heat of combustion of the by-products in the heat exchanger (12), part is released into the atmosphere via line (13) and the other part via line ( 1) and the compressor (15) the reactor (3) is fed again, so that a closed gas circuit is formed.
- the distribution of the two gas streams (13) and (1) depends on the ratio of reaction gas to cooling gas in the desublimator (6). For the particularly preferred ratio of approx. 1: 1, the splitting ratio of the two gas streams (13) and (1) is also approx. 1: 1.
- this gas circuit according to the invention it is possible to carry out the desublimation of the PMDA with a cooling gas without increasing the overall requirement for gases in the process.
- the air is added upstream of the reactor and is required only for the oxidation of the alkylaromatic
- the oxygen-containing gas which is only introduced into the process in the desublimation stage, has a double function.
- it serves as a cooling gas for desublimation and, on the other hand, it is the oxygen supplier for the main reaction (PMDA production) and catalytic exhaust gas combustion (combustion of the by-products).
- the reaction gas is subjected to complex exhaust gas scrubbing on cooled surfaces and its effect is unsatisfactory and then released into the open.
- the method according to the invention subjects the exhaust gas from the known sublimation with a cooling gas to a catalytic afterburning known per se. In this way, a clean exhaust gas is generated and at the same time the combustion heat of the by-products is obtained.
- the gas from the catalytic afterburning is divided according to the invention, one part is returned to the reactor for PMDA production, while the other part is released into the atmosphere.
- the amounts of carbon dioxide and water formed in the two reactors of the process are also discharged with the exhaust gas stream led to the outside.
- the cooling gas used for the desublimation the desired double function, to be the cooling gas and oxygen supplier, so that despite the desublimation of the PMDA with a cooling gas compared to the previously used methods no additional gas quantities are required.
- nitrogen and / or carbon dioxide is used as the cycle gas for both circuits, the gas cycle for the main reaction and the gas cycle for desublimation, and the carbon dioxide and water formed during the main reaction and afterburning of the by-products (Fig. 3, 16) removed from the gas circuit for desublimation using methods known in the art.
- the oxygen required for the two reactions (Fig. 3, 17) is expediently fed in pure form upstream of the reactor to generate the PMDA.

Description
Pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) is produced on an industrial scale using two different processes. In the liquid phase oxidation, 1,2,4,5-tetraalkyl-benzene or 2,4,5-trialkyl-benzaldehydes are reacted with nitric acid or oxygen-containing gases using metal catalysts containing halogen. This does not give the desired dianhydride, but rather the free acid which has to be dehydrated to the dianhydride in a subsequent process step. This additional process step and significant corrosion problems make these processes expensive and less attractive.
In the gas phase oxidation, the 1,2,4,5-tetraalkylbenzenes are passed together with air in the gas phase over a heterogeneous catalyst and the dianhydride is sublimated when the reaction gas cools. In an improved embodiment, the reaction gas according to DE-PS 23 62 659 is cooled after cooling to a temperature which is above the condensation temperature of the PMDA on cooled and thermostated surfaces, the PMDA desubliming. The temperature of the cooling surfaces must be below the condensation temperature of the PMDA, but above the condensation temperature of the by-products.
A disadvantage of this and similar processes that use cooled surfaces to desublimate the PMDA is that large cooling surfaces are necessary.
So würde z. Another way to desublimate PMDA from the reaction gas is to additionally cool the reaction gas directly with cold gases. So z. B. according to FR-
The problem of fractional desublimation arises not only in the FMDA, but also in the manufacture of other substances. So z. B. according to GB-
The object of the present invention was therefore to develop a process for the production of PMDA according to the gas phase process, in which the three process steps of oxidation of the feed product to PMDA, desublimation and exhaust gas processing are designed and connected to one another in such a way that the amount of gas required per unit of PMDA overall is not, or only insignificantly, greater than the amount of gas required for the oxidation of the starting material.
This object is achieved in that the desublimation of the PMDA is carried out using a cold gas, the by-products present in the exhaust gas of the desublimation are catalytically burned and part of the exhaust gas from the catalytic combustion the by-products are fed back to the main reactor for the production of PMDA so that a closed gas circuit is formed, while the other part of the exhaust gas from the combustion of the by-products is released into the atmosphere and / or is returned to the desublimation stage to form a second closed gas circuit.
- a) the desablimation of the pyromellitic dianhydride is carried out using a cold, oxygen-containing gas,
- b) the by-products contained in the exhaust gas of desublimation are catalytically burned and
- c) the exhaust gas from the catalytic combustion of the by-products is fed proportionately to the reactor for the pyromellitic acid anhydride production.
The process according to the invention has the advantage that the desublimation of the PMDA can be carried out directly with a cooling gas without increasing the amount of gas required for the total process per unit of PMDA. This simplifies the Gaaamt process, makes it more reliable and, although it uses a cooling device for desublimation, cheaper. Another advantage of the method is that the exhaust gas from the catalytic combustion is so clean is that it can be released directly into the atmosphere and there is no high chimney. At the same time, the processing of the exhaust gas from desublimation is considerably simplified in terms of apparatus and process technology, the removal of the by-products is eliminated, and additional energy is obtained by utilizing the heat of combustion of the by-products, so that the process has a number of economic and ecological advantages over the prior art brings.
The process is described in more detail with the help of Figures 1-3.
Hot air, which originates from the cyclic process, is fed into the reactor (3) via line (1) (FIG. 1). In front of the reactor, tetraalkyl-benzene is injected into the hot air via line (2). The temperature of the air can fluctuate over a very wide range, but it should be above the condensation point of the feed material in the air. The tetraalkyl-benzene can be injected into the air stream in liquid form, but it can also be converted into the gaseous state and then mixed with the air. The ratio of feed to air depends on the catalyst used and the desired temperature and flow conditions in the catalyst bed. As a rule, the weight ratio will be approx. 0.05 - 0.25: 1.
The substituents in the 1,2,4,5-positions of benzene are not restricted to alkyl groups, but other substituents are also possible, provided that they expand a carbon atom which is located directly on the benzene ring and form carboxylic anhydrides under the reaction conditions.
After the oxidation of the tetraalkyl-benzene in the reactor (3), the reaction gas, which contains PMDA and a number of by-products, is cooled via line (4) in the heat exchanger (5) to a temperature just above the condensation point of the PMDA in the reaction gas. The condensation point itself depends on the concentration of the PMDA in the reaction gas, which in turn depends on the loading of the air with tetraalkylbenzene in front of the reactor (3) and the reaction conditions in the reactor (3).
The precooled reaction gas is cooled in the desublimator (6) by mixing with a cool gas (7) to a temperature which is below the condensation point of the PMDA and above the condensation points of the by-products. The desublimation temperature to be set depends on the concentration of the PMDA in the reaction gas, the cooling gas, the desired degree of separation for PMDA and the type and amount of by-products in the reaction gas. For the cooling of the reaction gas, there are gases which do not react with the PMDA under the de-sublimation conditions and which do not interfere with the subsequent catalytic afterburning and with the oxidation of the PMDA raw material. Oxygen-containing gases are preferred, since in this way the oxygen required for PMDA production can be introduced into the cycle, e.g. B. oxygen and nitrogen and / or carbon dioxide and / or Steam. Air is particularly preferred as the cooling gas. The amount of cooling gas required depends on the desired desublimation temperature and the temperature of the cooling gas. It should be kept as small as possible in order not to have to move large amounts of gas. The temperature of the cooling gas must of course be below the desublimation temperature selected. Since the lower the cooling gas temperature, the lower the temperature of the cooling gas is, so lower temperatures are preferred. Gases at room temperature are particularly preferred. However, gases with temperatures lower than room temperature can also be used. However, since these gases first have to be cooled before they are used and cooling energy is expensive, cooling the gases to a temperature below room temperature is generally not sensible. When using cooling gases at room temperature, the ratio of cooling gas to reaction gas, depending on the PMDA content in the reaction gas, the desired degree of separation for PMDA and the required purity of the PMDA, is usually 0.4 - 1.5: 1 and particularly preferably approx. l: 1.
The PMDA deaublimated in the desublimator (6) is separated from the gas with the aid of the filter (9) and discharged via the line (8). The gas, which still contains all the by-products, is brought to a temperature q in the heat exchanger (10) which is sufficient to start the catalytic and adiabatic combustion of the by-products in the reactor (11). The exhaust from the In addition to the gas components of the cooling gas for desublimation, catalytic afterburning also contains carbon dioxide and water vapor from the main reaction in the reactor (3) and the afterburning of the by-products in the reactor (11).
The exhaust gas from the reactor (11) is usually so clean that after recovery of the heat of combustion of the by-products in the heat exchanger (12), part is released into the atmosphere via line (13) and the other part via line ( 1) and the compressor (15) the reactor (3) is fed again, so that a closed gas circuit is formed. The distribution of the two gas streams (13) and (1) depends on the ratio of reaction gas to cooling gas in the desublimator (6). For the particularly preferred ratio of approx. 1: 1, the splitting ratio of the two gas streams (13) and (1) is also approx. 1: 1. Instead of cooling the entire exhaust gas from the catalytic afterburning, it is also possible to only to cool the exhaust gas to be discharged and to drive the circulating gas at the temperature via line (1) into the reactor (3) with which it comes from the afterburning reactor (11).
With the help of this gas circuit according to the invention, it is possible to carry out the desublimation of the PMDA with a cooling gas without increasing the overall requirement for gases in the process. While in the previously used prior art method the air is added upstream of the reactor and is required only for the oxidation of the alkylaromatic, in the method according to the invention the oxygen-containing gas, which is only introduced into the process in the desublimation stage, has a double function. On the one hand, it serves as a cooling gas for desublimation and, on the other hand, it is the oxygen supplier for the main reaction (PMDA production) and catalytic exhaust gas combustion (combustion of the by-products). In which After the PMDA has been desublimated, the reaction gas is subjected to complex exhaust gas scrubbing on cooled surfaces and its effect is unsatisfactory and then released into the open. The method according to the invention subjects the exhaust gas from the known sublimation with a cooling gas to a catalytic afterburning known per se. In this way, a clean exhaust gas is generated and at the same time the combustion heat of the by-products is obtained. The gas from the catalytic afterburning is divided according to the invention, one part is returned to the reactor for PMDA production, while the other part is released into the atmosphere. The amounts of carbon dioxide and water formed in the two reactors of the process are also discharged with the exhaust gas stream led to the outside. By recycling part of the exhaust gas into the main reactor, it is possible in the method according to the invention to give the cooling gas used for the desublimation the desired double function, to be the cooling gas and oxygen supplier, so that despite the desublimation of the PMDA with a cooling gas compared to the previously used methods no additional gas quantities are required.
B.In addition to the described and preferred cycle process, there are still some variants of the method within the scope of the invention. So z. B. in the process shown in Fig. 2 in a highly simplified manner, part of the exhaust gas from the catalytic afterburning after cooling for desublimation can be returned, so that two closed circuits which run together in the area of desublimation and afterburning are formed. A possible division of the gas flows is also shown in Fig. 2. The recycle gas for desublimation is usefully mixed with the cold air. In principle, however, the air can also be at another point in the two circuits, e.g. B.
In this case, the recirculated exhaust gas flow must be correspondingly larger. Recycling part of the exhaust gas to the desublimation stage has the advantage that less air is required overall, but the disadvantage that the partial pressure of oxygen in the cycle gas for the PMDA generation is somewhat lower than in the preferred method.
In a further variant of the method according to the invention (Fig. 3), nitrogen and / or carbon dioxide is used as the cycle gas for both circuits, the gas cycle for the main reaction and the gas cycle for desublimation, and the carbon dioxide and water formed during the main reaction and afterburning of the by-products (Fig. 3, 16) removed from the gas circuit for desublimation using methods known in the art. The oxygen required for the two reactions (Fig. 3, 17) is expediently fed in pure form upstream of the reactor to generate the PMDA.
