Description
The present invention relates to a method and a device for the conformation of a detonation wave applicable in particular, but not exclusively, to shaped charges.
The charges formed and in particular the hollow charges are well known and widely used at present in devices used to perforate or cut a thick plate for example. In the hollow charges the explosive known as "useful explosive", which sets in motion the lining of the cavity is often initiated by a block of initiating explosive. If a screen is interposed between these two elements, a toroidal detonation wave is created in the useful explosive, which improves the perforation performance of the charge.
In the remainder of this text, the explosive used to set the coating in motion will be called "loading explosive" or "useful explosive". The expression "initiating explosive" designates a mass of explosive used to transmit the detonation wave initiated by a detonator to the useful explosive.
The purpose of the presence of the screen is to force the detonation wave to bypass it so that it arrives frontally, in the vicinity of the top thereof, on the conical surface delimiting the hollow part of the explosive loading. It is known that this increases the efficiency of the shaped charge.
However, the usual devices have the following drawback: the screen is almost always made of a compact material which can be an organic material such as nylon, but other materials are possible (metals, polymers, ceramics). However, the detonation wave transmitted by the explo - sif boot creates a shock wave in the screen; this shock wave propagates in this one at a vi very high tesse and is then transmitted inside the explosive of loading. Due to the very high speed of the shock wave in the compact screen, the latter arrives at a given point in the loading explosive before the detonation wave from the initiating explosive which has bypassed the screen. This results in a disturbance of the detonation which propagates in an environment already compressed by shock. The disturbance can go as far as the detonation stop. In less severe cases the detonation wave has symmetry defects.
The object of the present invention is precisely to remedy these drawbacks by means of a method and a device for shaping a detonation wave which prevents it from being disturbed by the shock wave emerging from the screen.
According to the main characteristic of the process which is the subject of the invention, this one, of the type of those in which a screen is interposed between a mass of initiating explosive and a mass of loading explosive so that the detonation wave bypasses the screen, is characterized in that a porous material is used to make it and in that it is given a shape such that, in the explosive of loading, the detonation wave resulting from the explosive ignition is always ahead of the shock wave from the screen. Indeed, in such a material the shock wave propagates at a speed which can be much lower than it would be in the same material in the compact state. In addition, this speed attenuates in a substantially exponential manner as a function of the path traveled from the origin of the shock in the part. On the contrary, the detonation wave which has propagated in the initiating explosive undergoes no attenuation, so that at a given point in the explosive the detonation wave is always ahead of the shock wave.
The invention also relates to a device for implementing this method. According to the main characteristic of this device, the latter, of the type comprising a mass of explosive charge and a mass of initiating explosive in contact with each other but separated from each other by a screen on part of their contact surface, is characterized in that the screen is a mass of porous material having a shape such that, in the explosive of loading, the detonation wave is always ahead of the shock wave from the screen.
The device which is the subject of the invention can be applied whatever the shape of the explosive mass, linear cylindrical with a plane of longitudinal symmetry or having a symmetry of revolution. In all cases, the screen has a shape such that its thickness decreases as one moves away from the axis of symmetry if there is a symmetry of revolution or from the plane of symmetry if the together has a linear shape, the exact shape being determined by those skilled in the art according to each particular case. On the other hand, a porous material is used such that the ratio of the density of this material to the density of the same material in the compact state is between 0.2 and 0.6. Among the porous materials which can be used to form the screen, it is possible in particular to use sintered metals, metal alloys or sintered metal oxides, sintered salts, glass in the form of agglomerated grains or beads and ceramics.
In addition, with the device which is the subject of the invention, it has been possible to observe a very good chronometry of the detonation wave, that is to say that the time of path of the latter inside the loading explosive has a dispersion of the order of 50 nanoseconds. Finally, a last advantage of the object device of the invention comes from the fact that the assembly consisting of the initiating explosive and the screen has a very small overall size compared to the devices of the prior art, generally less than 70% of the size of a corresponding set for a conventional device with equivalent performance.
- - la figure 1 est une vue schématique en perspective et en coupe d'un dispositif conforme à l'art antérieur dans le cas où celui-ci a une forme cylindrique ;
- - la figure 2 est une vue schématique en perspective et en coupe d'un dispositif conforme à l'invention dans le cas où celui-ci a une forme cylindrique et où la surface de contact entre l'explosif d'amorçage d'une part, l'écran et l'explosif de chargement d'autre part, est plane ;

- - Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view in section of a device according to the prior art in the case where it has a cylindrical shape;
- - Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view in section of a device according to the invention in the case where it has a cylindrical shape and where the contact surface between the initiating explosive on the one hand , the loading screen and explosive on the other hand, is flat;
- FIG. 3a is a half-view in section of a cross section of the device of FIG. 2 illustrating the propagation of the waves inside the masses of explosive and of the material constituting the screen, and
- - Figure 3b is a view similar to Figure 3a in the case where the screen has the shape of a biconvex lens.
Figure 1 illustrates a device of the prior art which, in the case shown here, has a cylindrical shape. This device consists of a mass of loading explosive 4 surmounted by a mass of
This problem is solved with the device which is the subject of the invention which is illustrated in FIG. 2, also in the case of a cylindrical load. It goes without saying that it would not go beyond the scope of the invention to modify the shape of the load, for example if it had a non-cylindrical shape but still having a symmetry of revolution or a linear shape with a plane of longitudinal symmetry.
For example, if a sintered copper block having a density equal to 0.3 times the density of the same material in the compact state is used to make the screen (for example, copper block obtained by casting and solidification), the speed of the initial shock wave is only 3.49 m / s in sintered copper while it is 6.16 m / s in compact copper. In addition, this speed decreases exponentially depending on the path traveled from the origin of the shock in the part.
In the case of FIGS. 2 and 3, the priming is done at point 7 located on the axis of symmetry of the together, on the upper face of the initiating explosive 6. The detonation wave 14 (FIGS. 3a and 3b), symbolized schematically on the fi gure by arcs of a circle and arrows in solid line, initiated from point 7, goes towards the periphery of the device, then bypasses the end A of it. The
If we consider a point P of the contact surface between the
As for FIG. 3b, it illustrates the propagation of the waves in the same way as FIG. 3a, but in the case where the
A 18.FIG. 3b also illustrates a particular embodiment of the invention in which the point of intersection I between the detonation wave and the shock wave crosses the
Waves 14c and 16c intersect at a point I: in a particular case of the invention, those skilled in the art can determine the shape of the device so that point I remains on the
Thus, the method and the device which are the subject of the invention have particularly advantageous advantages, the main one of which is to obtain a better yield than the comparable devices of the prior art since the detonation wave propagates in a medium which does not is not disturbed by the shock wave. On the other hand, for equal performance, in the device of the invention, the assembly constituted by the screen and the initiating explosive is significantly less bulky than in the devices of the prior art, the bulk being measured between point 7 which corresponds to the initiation point on the upper surface of the explosive 6 and the
As for the applications, they are many and varied and cover all the fields where one is brought to perforate or cut a sheet or other materials.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the sole exemplary embodiments which have just been described but that it is possible to envisage variants without thereby departing from the scope of the invention. Those skilled in the art will in fact be able to modify the shape of the device according to the needs and according to each particular case and use other materials than those mentioned above to make the screen or use any suitable explosive to carry the charges. 'priming and loading. Finally, if the examples described relate to hollow charges, the invention also applies to other types of charges, formed or flat.
