Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a new type of highly electroconductive and very thin elastomeric films, as well as to a process for producing these films and to a process for producing multiconnectors comprising such films.
- - soit par des particules métalliques en métaux nobles tels que l'argent ou l'or ;
- - either by metallic particles of noble metals such as silver or gold;
- - Or by metallic particles of non-noble metals such as copper, iron and the like coated with noble metals.
However, since gold and silver are expensive and give rise to products whose mechanical properties are poor, attempts have been made to replace them with an electrically conductive carbon-black powder.
- - as regards the ability of the elastomer to disperse such a charge; ?
- - as regards the degradation of the mechanical properties of the product obtained, in particular a fall in the resistance to tearing, of elongation, of the breaking limit, etc.
- - soit par moulage par compression, ou moulage par injection, ou encore par combinaison de ces deux procédés ;
- - Either by compression molding, or injection molding, or by combination of these two methods;
- - either by calendering and crosslinking or by extrusion and crosslinking.
L'Art antérieur permet également d'obtenir des films extrêmement minces :
- - soit par dépôt sérigraphique ou dépôt d'encre élastomère ;
- - soit par dépôt d'encre et raclage.
- - either by screen printing or elastomer ink deposition;
- - either by ink deposit and scraping.
- - en ce qui concerne le moulage, celui-ci ne permet pas d'obtenir d'une façon industrielle des films d'épaisseur inférieure au dixième de millimètre ;de plus,dans les moulages fins de l'ordre de 1/l0ème de mm, il est extrêmement difficile d'obtenir une répartition homogène des charges sur l'ensemble du volume ; en outre, la liaison de deux films successifs n'est pas bonne et dans le cas du moulage par injection, elle n'est possible qu'en effectuant des injections successives de matière, opérations qui sont difficiles à régler, complexes, onéreuses et aléatoires ;
- - en ce qui concerne le calandrage, ce procédé, tout en permettant d'obtenir des films minces qui peuvent être réticulés en continu, demande l'emploi d'intercalaires ; de plus, la liaison de plusieurs films successifs entraîne des difficultés considérables de manipulation et la présence, difficilement évitable, de bulles d'air ; en outre, le laminage entraîne une répartition inégale des charges conductrices de l'électricité entre les bords et le centre du film élastomère ;
- - en ce qui concerne l'extrusion, dont on ne connaît pas d'applications industrielles à des élastomères conducteurs, elle entraîne les mêmes problèmes que ceux signalés à propos du calandrage, en ce qui concerne la liaison de films successifs ;
- - as far as molding is concerned, this does not make it possible to obtain films industrially with a thickness of less than one tenth of a millimeter; moreover, in fine moldings of the order of 1 / 10th of a mm , it is extremely difficult to obtain a homogeneous distribution of the loads over the entire volume; in addition, the connection of two successive films is not good and in the case of injection molding, it is only possible by carrying out successive injections of material, operations which are difficult to adjust, complex, expensive and random ;
- - as regards calendering, this process, while making it possible to obtain thin films which can be crosslinked continuously, requires the use of dividers; moreover, the bonding of several successive films leads to considerable handling difficulties and the presence, which is difficult to avoid, of air bubbles; furthermore, the rolling results in an uneven distribution of the electrically conductive charges between the edges and the center of the elastomeric film;
- - As regards extrusion, of which there are no known industrial applications for conductive elastomers, it causes the same problems as those reported with regard to calendering, as regards the bonding of successive films;
- - with regard to screen printing, such as the deposition of "ink" elastomer, these methods only allow the use of certain specific types of elastomers, generally having low mechanical properties and containing certain types of fillers. It is particularly difficult to work with fibers or lamellar fillers (compatibility problems between fiber length and screen pitch). Scraping, even without a screen, induces anisotropy in the direction of the fibers.
- - en ce que les films élastomères obtenus conformément à la présente invention, présentent une conductibilité électrique beaucoup plus élevée que les films électroconducteurs chargés de carbone connus dans l'Art antérieur;
- - In that the elastomeric films obtained in accordance with the present invention have an electrical conductivity much higher than the electroconductive films charged with carbon known in the prior art;
- - in that they exhibit at the same time substantially better "mechanical properties, in particular as regards the tear resistance, and
- - in that the films according to the invention can be produced at will so that they are conductive on their two faces or conductive on only one of their faces and perfectly insulating on their other face, with a possibility of varying d on the one hand the thickness of the insulating layer depending on the applications, and on the other hand the electrical conductivity in the conductive layer so as to obtain a conduction gradient in the direction of the thickness of the film.
- - The production of such films having the properties set out above is made possible thanks to the original composition of said films, associated with the implementation of a new process.
In addition, such elastomeric films make it possible to produce microconnectors and multiconnectors which are more efficient than those proposed in the prior art, by implementing a simpler process, less costly and making it possible to eliminate the problems posed in the prior art. by adhesion between the insulating layers and the electrically conductive layers.
The subject of the present invention is an electroconductive film, of the type based on elastomers, in particular silicone elastomers which can be crosslinked cold or hot, and using carbon fibers as electroconductive filler, characterized in that the electroconductive properties of the film in the direction of its thickness are a function of the distribution of carbon fibers in the direction of said thickness, which distribution is adjusted by centrifugation.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the film according to the invention, the distribution of the carbon fibers in the direction of the thickness of the film is such that the film is uniformly electrically conductive-According to another advantageous embodiment of the film according to the Invention, the distribution of carbon fibers in the direction of the thickness of the film is such that the electric conductivity is limited to a fraction of its thickness, while the other fraction is insulating.
According to an advantageous arrangement of this embodiment, the respective thicknesses of the electroconductive fraction and of the insulating fraction are adjustable at will, by adjusting the modalities of the centrifugation.
According to yet another advantageous embodiment of the film according to the invention, the distribution of the carbon fibers in the thickness of said film, or in the electroconductive layer of the latter, is such that the film, or its electroconductive layer, has a conduction gradient in the thickness direction of said film, or of said electrically conductive layer.
According to another advantageous embodiment of the film according to the invention, it also contains a determined proportion of a diluent preferably consisting of silicone oil.
According to an advantageous arrangement of this embodiment, the proportion of diluent present in the finished film is between 0.5 and 100% by weight of the elastomer.
According to another advantageous embodiment of the film according to the invention, the proportion of carbon fibers present in the finished film can be greater than 100% by weight of the elastomer.
According to yet another advantageous embodiment of the film according to the invention, the carbon fibers incorporated in the film have a most located average diameter. often between 5 and 25 microns and an average length of 0.01 to 2 mm.
The electroconductive film according to the invention consequently has an improved resistivity ranging from 2 to 0.010 ohms / cm / cm, a breaking load generally between 1 and 10 MPa, a tear strength greater than 100 Newton / cm and a elongation at break between 50 and 400%.
- - during a first step, a suitable proportion of electroconductive carbon fibers is introduced by kneading into a silicone elastomer,
- - During a second step, the distribution of said carbon fibers is adjusted in the direction of the thickness of the film, as well as this thickness, by centrifugation.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the method according to the present invention, the adjustment of the thickness of the electroconductive film, which may be at least 1 / 10th of a millimeter, is obtained by appropriately adjusting the speed of centrifugation according to the diameter of the centrifuge, on the other hand the viscosity of the mixture of elastomer and carbon fibers, and thirdly the temperature of the mixture subjected to the centrifugation operation.
According to an advantageous arrangement of this embodiment, the centrifugation speed is of the order of 1000 to 30,000 revolutions / minute and more, for a centrifuge diameter of 0.1 to 1 m or more.
According to another advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, the centrifugation operation is stopped as soon as the thin film has been spread on the wall of the centrifuge, in order to obtain a distribution. homogeneous carbon fibers in the film.
According to yet another advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, the centrifugation speed capable of ensuring spreading of the mixture in the form of a thin film on the wall of the centrifuge is initially advantageously of the order of 1000 to 5000 revolutions / minute and more, and is increased as soon as the said film is obtained to cause the migration of the fibers towards one of the faces of the film.
According to an advantageous arrangement of this embodiment, the speed of the centrifuge is increased up to 30,000 revolutions / minute and more, to cause the migration of the fibers over a fraction of the thickness of the film, thus leaving the fraction remaining of the thickness of the film devoid of carbon fibers, and, consequently, having the insulating properties of the elastomer, the electroconductive properties of the film being limited to the fraction of it containing said carbon fibers.
According to another embodiment of the method according to the invention, the centrifugation speed is gradually increased in stages, from a spreading speed of the order of 1000 to 5000 revolutions / minute up to a speed of 30,000 revolutions / minute, to cause non-homogeneous migration of the carbon fibers in the film, each migration layer corresponding to a speed step to obtain a conduction gradient in the direction of the thickness of the film, or of the latter's electroconductive layer.
According to a preferred arrangement of this embodiment, the viscosity of the initial elastomeric mixture, preferably silicone-carbon fiber elastomer, is less than .100,000 centipoise.
According to an advantageous form of this arrangement, the speed of the initial elastomer-carbon fiber mixture is lowered if necessary by adding a solvent, for example a chlorinated or aromatic solvent, and in particular trichlorethylene, in an amount of 5 at 20% by weight relative to the weight of the mixture, to cause spreading of the mixture according to a reduced thickness. relative to the film thickness obtained in the absence of solvent, the solvent being evaporated immediately after the formation of the thin film by spreading by centrifugation, by applying a reduced pressure of the order of 150 to 10 Torr, or simply by renewal of air under approximately 760 Torr, optionally followed by heating to a temperature between 20 and 220 ° C.
According to another advantageous form of this arrangement, the viscosity of the elastomer-carbon fiber mixture is lowered by addition. to the latter of a diluent consisting, for example, of a silicone oil at a rate of 0.5 to 100% by weight relative to the weight of the mixture.
According to the invention, in the case where the silicone elastomer is of the hot crosslinkable type, the spreading step by centrifugation is followed by an application of possibly wet heat, this application of heat being preceded, in the case where the viscosity of the initial mixture has been reduced using a solvent, of an evaporation operation of the latter.
The present invention also relates to a process for manufacturing multiconnectors highly conductive of electricity, of thickness or not very small, of the laminated type, namely comprising electroconductive layers alternating with insulating layers, characterized in that- said multiconnectors are obtained by repeating several times and up to 500 times or even more, the centrifugation operation followed by migration of the carbon fibers, with new successive charges of mixture of elastomer and carbon fibers.
According to an advantageous embodiment of this process, the first film produced is subjected to incomplete crosslinking, which does not exceed 80%, by reducing the duration and / or the temperature of the application of heat, after which the following is introduced. a new charge of mixture of elastomer and carbon fibers which is subjected to a centrifugation operation and to a migration operation of the carbon fibers, the complete crosslinking of the elastomer being carried out only when all of the films which form the connector have been applied to each other.
The present invention also relates to a method for manufacturing highly electrically conductive microconnectors, extremely thin, conductive on both sides, characterized in that said microconnectors are obtained by repeating several times and up to 500 times the centrifugation operation, with new successive charges of mixture of elastomer and carbon fibers.
In addition to the foregoing arrangements, the invention also comprises other arrangements which will emerge from the description which follows.
The invention relates more particularly to highly electroconductive elastomeric films and of very small thickness in accordance with the above provisions, thus that the means used for their production and the microconnectors and multiconnectors produced using these films, as well as the circuits and apparatus including these microconnectors and multiconnectors.
The invention will be better understood using the additional description which follows, which refers to an example of implementation of the process according to the invention for the production of the elastomeric films which are the subject of the latter. and for the production of multiconnectors and microconnectors from these films.
It should be clearly understood, however, that this example of implementation is given solely by way of illustration of the subject of the invention, of which it does not in any way constitute a limitation.
A silicone elastomer is introduced into a kneader, or a cylinder kneader, into which are also introduced electroconductive carbon fibers, with graphitic structure, of a few microns in diameter (5 to 10 microns) and from 0.01 to 1 mm long ; the amount of silicone elastomer introduced represents 80% by weight of the total weight and the amount of carbon fibers represents 20% by weight of the total weight.
- - silicones monocomposants réticulant à froid, par exemple du type CAF 3 de RHONE POULENC ou du type RTV 162 de GENERAL ELECTRIC ;
- - silicones monocomposants réticulant à chaud, par exemple du type avec peroxyde ou du type sans peroxyde CRTV 6424 de GENERAL ELECTRIC ;
- - cold-curing single-component silicones, for example of the CAF 3 type from RHONE POULENC or of the RTV 162 type from GENERAL ELECTRIC;
- - hot-curing single-component silicones, for example of the peroxide type or of the CRTV 6424 peroxide-free type from GENERAL ELECTRIC;
- - two-component silicones crosslinking more or less quickly depending on the temperature, of type 44520 from DOW CORNING.
The viscous mass resulting from kneading is intro taken from the drum of a centrifuge to produce a film on the wall of said drum by centrifugation.
The centrifugation speed is chosen from the range between 1500 rpm at start-up and 6000 rpm for a centrifuge diameter of 30 cm.
The duration of centrifugation at this speed is of the order of 30 minutes.
The viscosity of the mass introduced into the centrifuge can optionally be lowered to reduce the thickness of the resulting film. The reduction in viscosity can be obtained by adding to the viscous mass, before its introduction into the centrifuge, a solvent which is then evaporated by subjecting the film obtained. By spreading by centrifugation to a sequence of application of pressure reduced by about 150 Torr and by slight heating to a temperature below the crosslinking temperature when the silicone elastomer used is of the hot crosslinkable type.
This reduction in viscosity can also be obtained by adding to the viscous mass before its introduction into the centrifuge, a silicone oil, for example, intended to be definitively incorporated into the mixture.
Insofar as it is desired to obtain an electrically conductive film on its two faces and throughout its entire thickness, the rotation of the centrifuge is stopped as soon as the film is spread on the walls of the latter.
If, on the contrary, it is desired to obtain an electrically conductive film over a fraction of its thickness and insulating the other fraction, the speed of rotation of the centrifuge is increased, after the film has been formed, so as to obtain migration. fibers of carbon towards the face of the film applied against the walls of the centrifuge.
The choice of the speed of migration and the duration of this phase of rotation of the centrifuge determine a more or less rapid migration towards the outer face of the film, so that one can, by adjusting the speed and the duration of the migration phase, migrating the fibers over 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, etc. of the thickness of the film.
- - dans le cas d'élastomères de silicone réticulant à froid sous l'effet de l'humidité de l'air, il peut s'avérer avantageux d'accélérer la réaction de réticulation par passage d'un courant d'air humide porté à une température de 70°C environ ;
- - in the case of silicone elastomers crosslinking cold under the effect of air humidity, it may prove advantageous to accelerate the crosslinking reaction by passing a stream of moist air brought to a temperature of about 70 ° C;
- - in the case where, for the formation of the film in accordance with the invention, hot crosslinking silicone elastomers are used, the film is heated as soon as it has been shaped (or as soon as after the removal of the solvent, in the case where a solvent has been added to reduce the viscosity) either by passing a current, hot air or another gaseous fluid or hot liquid, or by infrared radiation.
- - either conductors-on their two faces and throughout their thickness,
- - either conductors on one of their faces and insulation on the other face.
In the latter case, the films may have a resistance per unit length of up to 0.05 ohms / cm on their conductive faces, which can be compared with the value of a few milliohms / cm corresponding to the charges. money, significantly more expensive than those made of carbon fibers, and with the value of 1 to 100 ohms / cm corresponding to the charges of carbon powder having the limitations already indicated with respect to carbon fibers - while the insulating part of said elastomeric films has a resistance per unit length of up to 1 0 16 ohms / cm.
- instead of carrying out the complete crosslinking of the film obtained after spreading and possibly migration of the carbon fibers, only 80% crosslinking is carried out by stopping the rotation of the centrifuge before the crosslinking is finished, that is to say say after 20 minutes, for example, then a new charge of kneaded mixture is introduced which is spread by centrifugation and into which the carbon fibers are migrated, if necessary.
This process can be repeated n times as long as the cumulative thickness of the successive films remains small compared to the diameter of the centrifuge.
With films having a thickness of the order of a tenth of a millimeter, this operation can be repeated up to 500 times with a centrifuge 1 meter in diameter, complete crosslinking being carried out only once all of the successive layers shaped in the centrifuge.
The ribbon obtained is then taken out of the centrifuge to be cut by any suitable means such as cutter, laser, jet of fluid, etc. in the thickness direction to obtain multiconnectors.
The highly conductive elastomeric films according to the invention, the thickness of which can be as small as a tenth of a millimeter, thanks to the implementation of the centrifugation process, have excellent mechanical properties, because the fibers of carbon retain all their integrity (and are not broken as they could be in a molding process), create a reinforcement within the elastomer to increase its mechanical properties and in particular the resistance to tearing.
With regard to the micro-connectors and the multi-connectors obtained in accordance with the present invention, the adhesion of the insulating part / conductive part is as strong as the cohesion of the film since once in two this adhesion "does not exist" but is obtained "in situ" and another time out of two is done with slight interpenetration of the uncrosslinked material and the incompletely crosslinked material and this with a common final crosslinking.
- - electrically conductive seals,
- - electromagnetic shielding joints,
- - pads necessary for making elastomeric keyboards used in all areas of electronics requiring a man / machine interface such as telephony, calculators, word processing, remote control, etc.
The following table makes it possible to compare very immediately some of the characteristics of an elastomer film, obtained after crosslinking and loaded with carbon fibers with a graphitic structure having a few microns in diameter and a length of 0.01 to 1 millimeter, with respect to the same characteristics of the product, obtained by molding, corresponding to a filler with carbon-black powder.
As is apparent from the above, the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of implementation, embodiment and application which have just been described more explicitly; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants which may come to the mind of the technician in the matter, without departing from the framework, or the scope, of the present invention.
