Abstract

An attachment for cutting the edge of a length of material travelling towards a sewing location is mounted on the working or operating surface of a sewing machine. A drive fork is acted upon by a needle bar and drives a movable cutter blade via a drive or control cam carrier. The movable cutter blade is arranged at a blade holder which is pivotable about a pivot axis which is laterally spaced from a cutting plane defined by the movable cutter blade and a fixed cutter blade. A large throughpassage or space for strips separated from the length of material by the cutter blades is formed between the cutting plane and the blade holder.

Claims (4)

1. Additional attachment for a sewing machine for cutting edges of material, having a stationary blade and a movable blade, which is drivable by the needle bar of the machine and co-operates in a scissor-like manner with the stationary blade, said movable blade being in driving connection with the needle clamping screw of the needle bar via a pivotal lever mechanism, and the stationary and movable blades together forming a cutting plane, characterised in that the pivotal lever mechanism comprises a drive cam support (6), which is provided with a bifurcated driver (5), and a blade support (7) which supports the movable blade (17) and engages in the drive cam support (6), the drive cam support (6) being pivotably mounted in one particular plane on a first rotary axle (9), and the blade support (7) being pivotably mounted in another particular plane on a second rotary axle (axle pin 11), said planes being disposed at an axial spacing from the cutting plane and forming a clearance for the portion of material to pass between the cutting plane of the two blades (17, 21) and the pivotal planes of the drive cam support (6) and the blade support (7).

Additional attachment for a sewing machine according to claim 1, characterised in that the blade (17) has a U-shaped configuration, the first leg forming the cutting portion (16) and being held by a connection-piece, which supports the first leg, at a spacing from the pivotal plane of the blade support (7) which is formed by the second leg.
3. Additional attachment for a sewing machine according to claim 1, characterised in that the blade (17) is adjustably mounted on the blade support (7).
4. Additional attachment for a sewing machine according to claim 1, characterised in that the blade (17), together with the blade support (7), abuts resiliently against the cutting edge (20) of the stationary blade (21).
