Description

The invention relates to devices for reproducing sound in several dimensions from a stereophonic recording.

The existing reproduction devices intended for listening at home, that is to say in rooms whose dimensions are limited, aim to give the listener an impression approaching that which he feels in a bathroom. concert.

In fact, these devices achieve these results only very imperfectly.

Among their shortcomings are the following. The impression received by the listener is very different from that of a concert hall, even intended for chamber music, because the reverberations on the walls of the listening room of small dimensions have intensities, a spectrum of frequency and delays very different from those of the original part and the manipulations when taking sound can not compensate for these differences.

The two speakers (or even four speakers) used for reproduction do not allow the listener to find the distribution of timbres to which he is accustomed, the stereophonic effect practically exists only for a single listening position and all displacement from this position results in an apparent relative displacement of instruments and voices. Generally speaking, the listener of a stereophonic system who knows that, in a symphonic orchestra, the brass instruments are located at the top of the orchestra, is shocked to hear them concentrated with the woodwinds and the violins.

Attempts have already been made to make improved sound reproduction devices. In particular, a conforming device of the type defined in the preamble of claim 1 (US-A-4,053,711) is known with various variants. One of these variants, not in accordance with this preamble (Figure 5), includes filters having a cut-off frequency corresponding substantially to the limit of the audio tape. The insertion of such filters in the feedback loop in the direct signal that another embodiment provides would not allow the audio loop to be balanced.

The document US-A-4,039,755, for its part, discloses a stereophonic sound reproduction device having a mixer head circuit, but in a different assembly from that of document US-A-4,053,711.

The invention aims to provide a reproduction device making it possible, from conventional stereophonic recordings, to better restore the atmosphere of a concert hall, to give a distribution of timbres corresponding to that of the orchestra and to freeze this arrangement of timbres whatever the position of the listener in a large listening volume.

Dans ce but, l'invention propose un dispositif du type ci-dessus défini, conforme à la partie caractérisante de la revendication 1.To this end, the invention provides a device of the type defined above, in accordance with the characterizing part of claim 1.

In such a device, there is satisfactory balancing and combination of the input signals from the two stereophonic channels to supply the additional speakers: it is in this form that the rear reflections of a concert hall are best reproduced. This provision is in no way found in document US-A-4,053,711 and nothing in document US-A-4,039,755 suggests that it can be associated with advantage with a supply circuit according to the preamble of claim 1.

The additional loudspeakers and the supply circuit associated with them constitute a propagation assembly making it possible to give an impression similar to that of a concert hall: the delay line provided for each loudspeaker (or common to the two loudspeakers), advantageously adjustable , reproduces the effect of the length and width of the concert hall; the filter, or filters, make it possible to reproduce the effect of the nature of the walls of the concert hall as well as their reflection and their mixing, thanks to the mixer. The gain of the power supply circuit of the pair of additional speakers is advantageously adjustable, so as to allow the listener to measure the proportion of sound volume coming from the stereo set and the propagation set.

In a more elaborate embodiment of the invention, the device comprises a restitution assembly giving a more faithful representation of the distribution of the stamps and moreover avoiding the apparent displacement of these various stamps relative to one another in the event of displacement of the listener in the listening room. For this, the propagation assembly comprises four enclosures arranged along a trapezoid, the two enclosures placed along the large base of the trapezoid being located at the same height near two opposite corners of the part, along the width thereof, while the other two speakers are placed at a lower height and are closer to the listening location.

In practice, good results will be obtained by arranging the four enclosures so that the projection on the ground of the sides of the trapezoid makes an angle of the order of 30 to 40 ° with the large dimension of the room.

To better simulate the lateral reflections of the walls of a concert hall, two lateral speakers can be provided and fed by a circuit similar to that associated with the additional speakers mentioned above.

All the speakers will advantageously consist of directional mini-speakers, possibly associated with subwoofers. Such mini-speakers can be accommodated more easily in an apartment and, moreover, take into account the characteristics of the human ear, which locates an emission source the less easily the more it is small dimension.

We thus obtain a true three-dimensional sound reproduction, which we can qualify as holophony, the multiplicity of loudspeakers preventing the ear from locating individual sources and giving the impression of a sound bath where the different timbres are apparently found in their normal relative position.

The invention will be better understood on reading the following description of particular embodiments, given by way of nonlimiting examples. The description refers to the accompanying drawings, in which:
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective block diagram showing the arrangement of the speakers of the device in a room,
  • FIG. 2 is an elevation view of the part, along its great length, and of the arrangement of the enclosures shown in FIG. 1,
  • FIG. 3 is a block diagram of an embodiment of the power supply circuit for the propagation assembly,
  • FIG. 4 is a diagram showing a possible constitution of the head stage of the circuit of FIG. 3.

The embodiment of the invention which will now be described is intended to equip a parallelepipedic listening volume, which is the usual form of a living room. When, as in the case shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the room has a different length and width, the restitution assembly will comprise two enclosures 10a and 10b placed near one of the walls forming the width of the room in the angles of it. These two speakers 10a and 10b are advantageously placed so that their base is approximately 15 cm above the listener's head when the latter is in his listening position. This arrangement takes advantage of the non-homogeneous nature of auditory perception. Two other enclosures 12a and 12b are placed in the following manner: from the projection of the enclosures 10a and 10b on the floor, two lines are drawn making an angle a of approximately 35 to 40 ° with the side walls. The speakers 12a and 12b will be placed vertical to these lines, at a height h o such that their apex is approximately at the level of the listener's chest, in order to avoid an overly axial perception of these speakers. The ratio between the spacings 12 of the enclosures 12a-12b and 1, of the enclosures 10a-10b will be of the order of 0.6. If for example 1, = 3.3 m, the distance 1 2 between the speakers 12a and 12b will be of the order of 2 m.

The two speakers 10a and 12a will be supplied by one of the channels of a stereophonic reproduction chain which may be of a conventional nature, the speakers 10b and 12b by the other channel. All of these speakers will advantageously be of the maniature type, in order to reduce the possibilities of individual location of these speakers by the ear. They can be supplemented by subwoofers.

The propagation assembly intended to simulate the reverberations from the bottom of the room comprises, in its simplest embodiment, two enclosures 14a and 14b placed near the wall opposite to that which receives the enclosures 10a and 10b. Their height h corresponds to the ear height of the listener.

The speakers 14a, 14b are supplied by a circuit of the kind shown in FIG. 3. This circuit is added to a conventional stereophonic reproduction circuit 18, which may be of any constitution, comprising conventional organs for reading and pre-amplification, shown diagrammatically in 20, and a power amplifier 22 supplying the speakers 10 and 12. The circuit comprises, in the version which incorporates the connections shown in dashes in FIG. 3, a head stage 24 which fulfills in particular the function of summing the signals of the two stereophonic channels taken from the preamplifier 20. This summation makes it possible to mix the stereophonic signals as are mixed, in a concert hall or concert hall, the sound waves coming from the stage when they arrive near the back of the hall.

The signal from the head circuit 24 is then applied to a delay line 26 which retains it for a variable time depending on the length of the room which it is desired to simulate, taking into account that 100 ms corresponds to approximately 34 m. The signal leaving the delay line 26 is then sent to a mixer 28 which also receives, via a direct line 30 provided with an adjustment potentiometer 32, an undelayed component. A fraction of the signal leaving the delay line is returned upstream of this line through a filter 34 intended to attenuate sounds beyond a frequency of approximately 500 Hz. The response curve of this filter may advantageously have a particularly marked attenuation for an intermediate frequency, between 500 Hz and 1 kHz approximately. Finally, the output signal from the mixer 28 drives a power amplifier 36 connected to the speakers 14a and 14b. In the case where the delay line 26 has several elements, the circuit may include means making it possible to reinject the signal having passed through the filter 34 more or less towards the input of the delay line, to modify the sensation of volume.

The circuit also includes the usual potentiometers or rheostats for volume adjustment and balancing.

In a particularly favorable embodiment from the acoustic point of view, the delay line 26 of the circuit of FIG. 3 uses charge transfer circuits associated with a high frequency clock (typically 200 kHz) and the head circuit 24 can then have the constitution shown in FIG. 1. The input mixer-separator 38 drives an active second order filter 40, intended to cut the frequencies exceeding the audio band. This filter drives, through an impedance separator-adapter 42, a dynamic compression circuit 44 (using for example an integrated circuit NE 571) made necessary by the use of a transfer delay line dump. This delay line includes a sampling circuit, each sample being stored in a capacitor, then transferred to another, this technique making it easy to reintroduce the return signal from the filter 34 at a variable stage.

On peut par exemple prévoir quatre positions, correspondant à un affaiblissement à partir de 4, 6, 8 et 10 kHz.The circuit of FIG. 3 can be completed by an additional filter, immediately upstream of the amplifier 36, making it possible to model the response at high frequencies and to simulate a performance hall. This filter can be fitted with a switch to weaken the signal, for example at the rate of 3 dB per octave, from a high variable frequency. We can for example provide four positions, corresponding to a loss from 4, 6, 8 and 10 kHz.

In an alternative embodiment, a circuit of the kind shown in FIG. 3 is associated with each of the speakers 14a and 14b. In this case, the connections indicated in dashes are deleted in FIG. 3 and an additional circuit is connected to the output 48.

Chacune de ces enceintes 16a, 16b est associé à un circuit d'alimentation du genre montré en trait plein en figure 3, raccordé à la sortie du pré-amplificateur 20.As shown in Figure 2, the propagation assembly may include an additional pair of speakers 16a, 16b located on each side of the room and approximately mid-length thereof. These two enclosures may be placed on two lines each connecting the front enclosure of the restitution assembly to the enclosure of the corresponding propagation assembly. Each of these speakers 16a, 16b is associated with a power supply circuit of the type shown in solid lines in FIG. 3, connected to the output of the preamplifier 20.

The two additional speakers 16a and 166 make it possible to simulate the reverberation of the side walls, depending on the width and the reflectivity of the walls of the room.

We see that the device, in its most elaborate embodiment, makes it possible to simulate the width and the length of the room, thanks to the delay lines; the nature of the walls, thanks to the filters; the intensity of successive reflections, thanks to the reinjection of signals; and mixtures thanks to the summers.

As indicated above, it is advantageous to use miniature loudspeakers, the volume of which can be reduced to any cubic decimetres, in order to reduce the bulk and also to take advantage of their favorable properties from the point of view of the location of sound sources.

The invention is susceptible of numerous variants. In particular, it is possible to use the same delay line circuit to supply the rear speakers 14 and the speakers 16.
