- This material in sheet form has the direction of easy magnetization in the direction of rolling. In applications for this material, and specifically when used in the manufacture of transformer cores, the material is required to have reduced watt loss, because the consumption of electrical energy decreases as iron loss decreases.
- cube-on-edge silicon steel to which the invention is directed is conventionally processed by hot rolling and cold rolling with intermediate annealing. Thereafter, the steel is subject to texture annealing to produce the desired secondary recrystallization in the (110) (001) position. It has been found, in accordance with the present invention, that either prior to this final texture annealing or after final texture annealing the watt loss of the steel may be reduced by serrating the steel, with the serrating preferably being in a direction essentially perpendicular to the (001) crystal direction.
- the depths of the serrations are typically 0.025mm (001"), but may be within the range of .05 to .005mm (.002" to .0002"), the widths of the serrations are typically .lmm (.004") but may be within the range of .25 to .0025mm (.010" to .0001”), and the intervals or distance from serration to serration may be within the range of 5 to 12.7mm (.2 to .5").
