Abstract

The invention relates to a ground covering for open spaces, with which a water-permeable filter mat impervious to granular material is bonded to the underside of a water-permeable artificial grass so that a filling of granular material in the pile of the grass will not be swept away to the edges of the surface covered by the ground covering even in heavy rain since the water may drain immediately through the artificial grass and the filter mat to the underside of the ground covering.

Description

The invention relates to a floor covering for open spaces, in particular for games and sports facilities, with an artificial turf as a surface layer and with a filling of granular material, in particular sand, between the pile threads of the turf, over which the free ends of the pile threads protrude upwards.

In a known floor covering of this type, an approximately 20 mm high synthetic grass or an artificial turf with a water-impermeable back is used, which is produced in such a way that a tufted turf material is provided on the back with a continuous rubber-like layer. This artificial turf is then provided with a filling of granular material from the top, namely with a silicon-based material with additives.

A disadvantage of the known floor covering is that, owing to the water-impermeable coating on the back of the artificial lawn, rainwater and the like can only be drained off along the edge of the floor covering, with the risk that in heavy rain, for example in a thunderstorm, the granular material of the filling is washed out of the pole of the lawn, so that the floor covering no longer has the desired uniform surface quality, especially since the pile threads of the lawn are too long after the filling has been washed out.

Such a covering is also known from US-A-2 995 079. However, the problem of water drainage is not mentioned in detail and no corresponding measures are taken.

On the basis of the prior art and the problems recorded above, the object of the invention is to provide an improved floor covering of the type described in the introduction, in which the risk of the filling of granular material being washed out is reduced to a minimum.

This object is achieved with a floor covering of the type described at the outset according to the invention in that a water-permeable artificial lawn is provided as the artificial lawn and that a water-permeable filter mat which is impermeable to the granular material is laminated to the rear of the lawn.

The decisive advantage of the floor covering according to the invention over the previously known floor covering is that melt water and rain water, even if they occur in considerable quantities, through the artificial turf and the filter mat through to the underside of the floor covering and into the drainage system provided there can flow away, so that a washing away of the filling material between the pile threads of the lawn to the edge areas is prevented. At the same time, the filter mat also prevents material from the underground from migrating from below through the drainage openings of the artificial turf upwards into the pole of the turf.

It has proven to be advantageous if a grated lawn with coated ribs on its rear is provided as the water-permeable artificial lawn, since good water permeability can be achieved with this type of artificial lawn. It is particularly advantageous that the ribs projecting from the adjacent areas can also be well laminated to the filter mat, in particular by thermal welding.

It is also advantageous to use a water-permeable artificial turf, which is provided on the back with knobs made of elastic material, the knobs again ensuring good water permeability and also being available as protruding points or surface areas for attaching the filter mat, which are preferably available as Fleece or felt mat is formed.

Further details and advantages of the invention are explained in more detail below with reference to a drawing, the single figure of which shows a schematic perspective illustration of a preferred embodiment of a floor covering according to the invention, seen obliquely from below.

In detail, the drawing shows a section of an artificial lawn 10, on the underside of which a filter mat 12 is laminated. The filter mat 12 is laminated onto the lawn 10 in such a way that of the grid-like webs or ribs 14 of the base fabric of the lawn, at least the ribs running parallel to one another in one direction - in the exemplary embodiment, those running from left to right in the drawing Ribs - be provided with a coating which allows the filter mat 12 to be laminated onto the artificial turf 10, preferably by thermal welding. However, the coating of the ribs 14 does not need to be made of a thermoplastic material, but can also consist, for example, of a curable plastic which is first applied in the sticky state and with which the filter mat 12 is then connected or glued before the curing has ended .

The artificial turf 10 has pole bottoms 18 projecting upward from the lattice-like base fabric, which in practice are often formed by narrow plastic ribbons in practice, in particular when using Raschel fabric for the turf 10, and which, according to the invention, are longer than with a conventional artificial one Lawn and for example have a length of about 20 mm.

If the water-permeable artificial lawn 10 is now laid with the permanently laminated filter mat on the prepared, preferably also water-permeable or provided with a drainage system, a granular filler material, in particular sand, is applied to the top of the lawn 10 to complete the floor covering according to the invention and distributed so that there is a uniform layer of granular material or a layer of sand 16, the height of which is selected so that the free ends of the pile threads 18 protrude above the surface of the layer of sand 16, for example with a length of about 5 mm. Such a floor covering has proven itself excellently, for example, for tennis courts, since with good tread elasticity of the floor covering, a defined jumping of the balls is achieved, as is appreciated by the tennis players. On the other hand, with the floor covering according to the invention, unlike the floor coverings of this type used hitherto, there is no longer any danger that the filler material will be washed away to a considerable extent to the edges of the field and from the pole of the artificial turf in the event of heavy rain or snowmelt. In this way, a significant improvement in the stability of the floor covering with regard to the removal of surface water is achieved with little additional effort — it is only necessary to provide the filter mat or to replace a mat previously provided for improving the elasticity of the step with a suitable filter mat.

Finally, it should also be pointed out that a lawn tufted on a water-permeable base fabric can also be used as the water-permeable lawn, in which the ribs formed by the tufting on the back of the base fabric are provided with a coating.
