Abstract

A fleece is employed for the distribution of casting resin over a component surface to be sealed. Prior to the introduction of the casting resin, pressure is applied on the fleece with a heated stamp in order to smoothen the fleece. Through increased temperature of the stamp, or through a solvent, the fleece can be readily cemented together with the component surface. It is thus ensured that the fleece rests uniformly on the entire component surface to promote a favorable distribution of the casting resin.

Description

The invention relates to a method for sealing an electrical component, in particular a relay, with a housing having single openings or joints, wherein initially a fleece, ie. H. a layer of fabric with high capillary absorbency, placed over the housing openings to be sealed, pressed onto the component and then impregnated with a thin, hardenable casting resin.

Such a method is known from DE-B-2 616 299. It is mainly used to seal the housing openings for connecting pins and the housing joints between a base and a protective cap. With the use of the fleece, it is possible to distribute a small amount of casting resin well over the entire surface and, in particular, to introduce it to the housing openings without contaminating the protruding connecting pins and without significantly increasing the overall height of a relay or a similar component. There is also mentioned the possibility of using pressure stamps in order to adapt the cover layer comprising the fleece to level differences of the component surface. In the method described there, however, it is provided that the stamp presses on the already impregnated fleece, which in turn requires special measures to prevent the casting resin from sticking to the stamp.

It is crucial for the sealing process that the fleece lies flat on the housing surface to be sealed, especially at the edges, otherwise leaks can occur. In order to achieve this, it has also already been proposed to place a frame on the fleece during the introduction of the casting resin and thus to weigh down the fleece at the edges until the casting resin has hardened. However, this means an increased manufacturing effort, since these frames have to be made of a special material, for example polytetrafluoroethylene, in order to avoid the casting resin sticking to the frame. Because of the relatively long duration of the curing process (a few hours), a large number of these expensive frames must be available, and these must also be cleaned after each use in order to be able to be used again.

The object of the present invention is to further develop the method of the type mentioned at the outset such that the nonwoven applied is in good contact at all points on the component surface and thereby ensures an even distribution of resin and sealing, without special measures for stamp maintenance or additional parts such as magazines and Pressure frames are temporarily connected to the component and require additional work steps. According to the invention this object is achieved in that the pressing of the fleece takes place immediately before the application of the casting resin with a heated stamp adapted to the component surface.

By pressing the fleece according to the invention with a stamp mentioned, it is ensured that the fleece is smoothed before the resin is applied. This resin results in a good and tight connection to the component surface at all points; the fleece retains a smooth surface even after curing. The stamp for pressing the fleece is an additional device in production. However, it means much less effort than the method of first putting the relays in a magazine, fitting them with cover frames and these cover frames, which are used for the production output of the whole Hardening time must be available, later to be released from the relays and ready for a new use. The printout stamp used according to the invention, on the other hand, can easily be integrated into an automated production line.

In one embodiment of the method according to the invention, the temperature of the stamp is selected as a function of the material of the fleece in such a way that the fleece is only smoothed out by briefly pressing it on. With conventional nonwovens, such as rayon or polyester fibers, temperatures of around 200 ° C. are selected. In contrast to conventional methods, this method can also use nonwovens, such as polyester, which could not be used because of their tendency to form waves.

Furthermore, it may be expedient to choose the temperature of the stamp in adaptation to a thermoplastic housing material so that the housing surface is melted and glued to the fleece. For conventional thermoplastics, temperatures of around 240 ° C are selected. If the fleece covers larger free areas, it can also be expedient to provide the fleece with slots from the edge in order to prevent the fleece from being lifted off in any case.

In a further embodiment of the method according to the invention it is provided that the nonwoven is soaked with a small amount of a solvent attacking the housing material before the stamp is pressed on. In this case, the surface of the housing is slightly loosened and glued to the fleece when the stamp is pressed on. It may be sufficient to apply the solvent only in a few places, preferably in the edge region of the housing. In this case, the capillary action of the fleece is used for the distribution of the solvent before the casting resin is introduced. The solvent can, for example, through openings in the stamp the fleece can be applied. The advantage of this method lies primarily in the fact that a considerably lower temperature can be chosen for the stamp than in the methods mentioned above; for example, a stamp temperature of approx. 40 ° C. is sufficient. This is important in the case of very thin-walled housings which could warp at high stamp temperatures.

The solvent can be applied directly to the fleece through openings in the stamp, for example. This largely avoids the occurrence of harmful solvent vapors. The usual solvents are used, such as trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene, acetone or methylene chloride.

To the extent that the capillary effect could be impaired by a large-area gluing of the fleece, the flow of the casting resin from a filling point to distant housing edges can be improved by additional grooves in the housing surface. This can be of advantage in the case of large housing surfaces to be sealed, in which the casting resin then reaches the removed edges from a filling point via individual channels below the fleece and is distributed over the entire surface from the ducts through the fleece.

  • Fig. eine Vorrichtung mit zusätzlicher Lösungsmittelzuführung.
Examples of the method according to the invention are explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing. It shows
  • 1 is a device for pressing the fleece with a heated stamp,
  • Fig. A device with additional solvent supply.

The pressing of the fleece is generally described with reference to FIG. 1. A component 1, for. B. a relay, with a housing cap 2 (partially cut) and a base 3 through which pins 4 are guided to the outside. The housing thus has joints 5 between the housing cap 2 and the base 3 and openings 6 in the base for the connections 4, which are to be sealed together with a fleece 7 and with casting resin.

In order to prevent the fleece from lifting off, in particular at the edges, before the casting resin which is introduced into the fleece has hardened, the component 1 is conveyed on a transport frame 8 under a heated stamp 9, which is briefly pressed vertically onto the fleece. This stamp 9 is precisely adapted to the component surface. It thus has, for example, recesses 10 for the connecting pins 4. Any gradations of the component surface which are not shown here are also taken into account by adapting the stamp surface accordingly, so that the fleece 7 is pressed evenly onto the component surface and smoothed by the heated stamp.

As already described, the temperature of the stamp can be chosen so that the component surface is melted slightly and glued to the fleece. It could be sufficient that, for example, only the edge of the cap 2 is glued all round to the fleece 7.

As in FIG. 1, the component 1 has a cap 2 and a base 3, the housing openings of which are covered with a fleece 7. A heated stamp 11 is used to press the fleece, which additionally has a channel system 12 with openings 13 to the pressure side. A supply hose 14 can be used to apply a small amount of solvent to the fleece 7 in order to easily dissolve the surface of the component and to glue it to the fleece 7. The solvent can be introduced shortly before or while the stamp is pressed firmly onto the fleece.
