Definitions

  • This invention relates to a cask or container for liquid under pressure, and is of the type defined in the preamble to claim 1.
  • French specification 1468211 discloses a housing welded, i.e. integrally secured to the wall of the cask at the bung hole outlet.
  • the housing serves to retain the extractor tube head and valve assembly comprising a self contained unit which drops into the housing complete and which is held by a threaded ring.
  • This ring also forms the coupling for the top fitting.
  • the arrangement requires a number of parts and furthermore the extractor tube complete with valve can be easily removed by unscrewing the threaded ring. It is necessary to arrange for removal of the valve assembly and tube for cleaning purposes, and refilling.
  • An object of this invention is to provide a simplified construction for mounting the valve seal and extractor tube in which no additional metal inserts or retainers are used, and which results in a construction which is substantially tamper-proof in that it is difficult without a special tool, to remove the extractor tube.
  • the use of a liner is dispensed with.
  • the extractor tube can be removed only by upsetting the sealing ring to remove same, and then removing the extractor tube which calls for the use of a special tool to engage the head.
  • the top wall 10 of the container has a bung hole 11 and a housing 12 is secured around the hole by welding.
  • the housing has a skirt portion 13 with an inturned flange 13a.
  • a bush 14 engages in the flange by screw threads and the extractor tube 15 is secured to the bush or preferably moulded thereto, the bush and tube being of synthetic plastic material.
  • a collar 16 seats on the upper surface of the flange 13a and a compression spring 20 extends between this collar and a cup seat 17 for a ring seal 18, so that unless the cask has been broached the seal engages by its periphery a seating 12a and the undercut top of the extractor tube head 15a of the tube 1 5.
  • the skirt is gapped, e.g. at 19, to allow gas under pressure to enter the cask after the dispenser head has been fitted and the cask broached this also depressing the ring seal against its spring loading.
  • the seal is upset and removed and the tube, head and bush unscrewed.
  • a special tool is required for this operation e.g. one to engage in the liquid outlet apertures 15b of the head.

Description

  • This invention relates to a cask or container for liquid under pressure, and is of the type defined in the preamble to claim 1.
  • With casks as above it is customary to secure a collar to the top wall of the cask so as to upstand around the bung hole in which collar a metal insert engages, this insert being intemally screw threaded to receive a closure fitting which fitting carries the ring seal and extractor tube.
  • French specification 1468211 discloses a housing welded, i.e. integrally secured to the wall of the cask at the bung hole outlet. The housing serves to retain the extractor tube head and valve assembly comprising a self contained unit which drops into the housing complete and which is held by a threaded ring. This ring also forms the coupling for the top fitting. The arrangement requires a number of parts and furthermore the extractor tube complete with valve can be easily removed by unscrewing the threaded ring.
  • According to this invention there is provided a cask or like container for pressurised liquid in accordance with characterising clause of claim 1.
  • With the above arrangement, the use of a liner is dispensed with. Also, the extractor tube can be removed only by upsetting the sealing ring to remove same, and then removing the extractor tube which calls for the use of a special tool to engage the head.
  • The accompanying drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment in section.
  • As shown, the top wall 10 of the container has a bung hole 11 and a housing 12 is secured around the hole by welding. The housing has a skirt portion 13 with an inturned flange 13a. A bush 14 engages in the flange by screw threads and the extractor tube 15 is secured to the bush or preferably moulded thereto, the bush and tube being of synthetic plastic material.
  • If it is desired to remove the extractor tube, then the seal is upset and removed and the tube, head and bush unscrewed. A special tool is required for this operation e.g. one to engage in the liquid outlet apertures 15b of the head.

Claims (3)

1. A cask for pressurised liquid, having a housing (12) attachable to the top wall (10) of the cask at a bung hole outlet (11) so as to upstand therearound, the housing (12) having a skirt portion (13) depending into the cask, and supporting a liquid extractor tube (15) passing through the housing into the interior of the cask, the extractor tube (15) having a head (15a) located within the housing and a ring seal (18) and loading spring (20) also located in the housing around the extractor tube head with the periphery of the seal engaging a seating (12a) within and at the upper end of the housing, the top of the extractor tube head (1 5a) being received in the ring seal (18) which can be depressed into the housing against the spring loading to establish communication passageways through the housing to the cask, the skirt (13) having an inturned flange (13a) which is releasably engaged by a screw threaded bush (14) secured to the extractor tube (15), the housing (12) being integrally and non-releasably secured to the cask wall (10), the aperture at the seating at the upper end of the housing allowing the bush (14) with extractor tube (15) to pass therethrough following release from the flange (13a) whereby the extractor tube may be removed without removal of the housing, characterised by the skirt (13) being integral with the housing (12) whereby the extractor tube (15) can only be removed from the housing (12) by unscrewing the bush (14) from the flange (13a) of the skirt (13).
2. A cask as claimed in claim 1, wherein the bush (14) and liquid extractor tube (15) are integrally constructed of synthetic plastic material.
3. A cask as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein a collar (16) of bush (14) seats on the upper surface of the inside portion of the flange (13a), a compression spring (20) extending between said collar (16) and a cup seat (17) bearing on the ring seal (18), the periphery of said seal being spring urged against the seating (12a) at the upper end of the housing (12), the collar (16) having a diameter less than that of the seating (12a) opening diameter.
