Abstract
Description
In recent years, numerous investigations have been carried out in technology with the aim of clarifying damage in the insulation of electrical cables which is evidently caused by water accumulations ("water trees") and taking measures to prevent this cable damage. The number of publications that describe the growth of the water tree and make suggestions to suppress such phenomena that reduce the life expectancy of the cables. Obviously there is agreement that the larger the water accumulations, the more dangerous they are. Those of only a few µm in length are considered to be comparatively harmless.
The safest, but also the most expensive way to avoid aquatic marriages is to switch off water strictly over the entire life of the cable. However, this means a closed, e.g. welded on the edges, metal jacket with an elongated water-direct shield and a continuously stuffed conductor, so that all longitudinal channels are switched off from the outset. However, these measures are extremely complex, especially for medium voltage cables.
A known cable construction (US Pat. No. 4,145,567) is used in the same direction and for the same purpose. Here is immediately above the insulation. the compressible layer of a closed-pore foam is arranged on the outer conductive layer, which is enclosed by a metal tape glued to the edges. Apart from the increased construction effort and the increased external dimensions, the tape edges are not to be expected to be permanently watertight.
However, there are also other suggestions for avoiding or reducing the risk of water trees, which affect the composition or the structure of the dielectric. So it is z. B. known (DOS 27 54 336) to provide an inside outward diffusion gradient in the plastic insulation. For example, the insulation should be surrounded by a layer of water-absorbing material. What has not been taken into account here, however, is that the danger of water trees at interfaces, e.g. B. between insulation and conductive layers, is particularly large (tufts of water).
It is also already planned (DOS 28 17 804) to arrange a further layer containing a hygroscopic material in an energy cable outside and separate from the outer semiconducting layer, which limits the relative humidity of the environment including the conductor insulation to a value not exceeding 70% and stabilized. This is said to lead to a real protection of the insulation even if it contains voids and impurities.
However, such a moisture-absorbing layer, like the addition of moisture-absorbing fillers to the insulation (US Pat. No. 4,049,830) and water-soluble electrolytes, can only have the effect of postponing the time with certainty under the influence of the electric field, the latter measures still having the disadvantage bring increased contamination in the insulation with it, which leads to difficulties especially at higher voltages.
Another measure for reducing or avoiding water trees in the plastic insulation of electrical cables is also known for this reason (US Pat. No. 4,144,202). In this case, silane or silane compounds are added to the insulating material, so-called crosslinkable or not, as so-called water tree inhibitors. A special test provides evidence that mixtures containing such inhibitors or isolations made therefrom are highly resistant to water trees. The disadvantage here, however, is that these inhibitors, just like other additives which have been used for a long time in cable technology, such as stabilizers, antioxidants, plasticizers and the like, have the tendency to diffuse out of the insulation over time, so that their effectiveness wears off again. This known measure is therefore only suitable for postponing the point in time of damage occurring under the influence of the electric field; permanent protection of the cable is also not provided here.
The invention is therefore based on the object of ensuring permanent protection of the cable insulation against the influence of moisture, without having to go over to expensive new cable constructions with perhaps other disadvantages.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the silanes or silane compounds are grafted onto the macromolecules of the base polymers or base copolymers and are thus chemically bound to them. This chemical binding of the "inhibitors" guarantees long-term protection, since the silanes do not migrate out of the insulation, even at operating voltage and operating temperatures. This grafting and thus the permanent protection against water trees is independent of whether the insulating material, for. As polyethylene, forms the cable insulation in a cross-linked or non-cross-linked state. As the silanes or corresponding compounds, the already known ones, for example a vinyltrimethoxysilane, a vinyltrieth-o: iris, ilane or similar vinyllaanes, which have other hydrolyzable alkoxy groups instead of the methoxy or athoxy groups, can be used. Depending on the inventions that are placed on the respective insulation, amounts of 0.2-10%, preferably 1.0-3.0% by weight, of silanes can be used in carrying out the invention.
In itself it is known, on the macromolecules of poly - graft silanes mer materials, in order to create crosslinks at a later moisture. In a departure from the invention, however, the mechanical properties compared to non-crosslinked materials are to be improved and in particular the temperature resistance of such materials is to be increased.
A particularly advantageous continuation of the inventive concept results from the fact that the insulation, on the macromolecules of which the silane compound protecting from water trees grafted are cross-linked by exposure to moisture, and only in this way. The invention is based on the consideration that the destruction mechanisms summarized under the keyword "water treeing" run crystalline / amorphous only in the amorphous part of the insulation or in the border area. The crystallites with their higher density are on the one hand more resistant to charge carriers accelerated in the electric field, and on the other hand almost impenetrable for H 0 permeation. Diffusing water fronts must therefore migrate around the crystallites, so that with increasing degree of crystallinity in the insulation, decreasing H 2 0 permeation can be expected. If, as with the known peroxidic crosslinking, dry using suitable heat radiators or wet in the usual steam crosslinking systems, the crosslinking bridges are formed far above the crystallite melting range, these crosslinking points act during the subsequent cooling down to room temperature and crystallization of the structure as embedded defects, which are known greatly reduce the degree of crystallinity of the material treated in this way compared to an uncrosslinked material, but in the sense of the previous considerations make it more sensitive to the effects of water.
If, on the other hand, the grafted-on polymer material is crosslinked under the influence of moisture, as is provided in the implementation of the invention, the crosslinking sites are formed in the already crystallized state of the insulation, ie exclusively and only in the amorphous regions. However, the crystal structure itself remains largely undisturbed by cross-linking points, which are weak points in the crystal structure for possible water trees. The bundle-like. Polyfunctional crosslinking points in the amorphous region of the solidified base polymers or base copolymers forming the insulation also give the polymer material a higher structural strength. Both effects - high undisturbed crystallinity and cross-linking nodes in the amorphous area of the insulation - lead to an increased, over the life of the cable constant resistance to water tree growth.
In addition to these morphological influences, the physico-chemical property of the siloxane group Si-O-Si to repel water also plays an important role in protecting insulation according to the invention. The polymer, for example polyethylene, is quasi "hydrophobized" in its amorphous areas, i. H. water-repellent. As a result, both the pure diffusion and the electrophoretic diffusion taking place under the influence of the alternating electrical field are slowed down and the material is thus more resistant to water trees.
The production of a water-protected insulation according to the invention expediently takes place in such a way that the silanes or silane compounds are grafted onto the macromolecules of the base materials after the mixing and homogenization of the individual mixture components and before the molding. For this purpose, the melted polymer material is subjected to a temperature treatment of e.g. B. subject to 180-250 ° C. Either for isolation, either immediately afterwards or after an intermediate storage in a second processing stage. After the insulation has cooled and the action of moisture thereon, water-repellent siloxane groups are formed exclusively in the amorphous region between the crystallites.
The invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the single-conductor high-voltage table shown as an exemplary embodiment.
Insulation according to the invention can be produced, for example, by means of two extruders connected in series. (Cascade technology). In the first extruder, the silanes contained in the mixture are mixed, homogenized and grafted, while the second extruder is used to mold the mass which has already been grafted and delivered via a connecting part. The latter can also be degassed in the transfer area. However, any other method is also suitable if it is only ensured that the added silanes or silane compounds are grafted. For example, a two-step process is also possible, in which the grafting process is carried out in the first step, then the grafted material is blended with a catalyst batch and in a second step the material thus prepared is finally shaped by a shaping extrusion.
To demonstrate the effectiveness of the inventive concept, two cable samples, suitable for the transmission of 20 KV, were surrounded with insulation made of uncrosslinked polyethylene, vapor-crosslinked polyethylene and finally with a polyethylene prepared in accordance with the invention. These samples were aged with different conductor temperatures under operating voltage, namely for 200 hours. Then water was filled into the
From this it can be clearly seen that when aging with VDE-like conductor temperatures, polyethylene and cross-linked polyethylene have approximately the same resistance to water, but polyethylene treated with grafted silanes achieves significantly higher voltage levels.
The invention is of particular importance for all electrical cables that are operated with increased operating voltage. High-voltage cables in the sense of the invention are therefore to be understood to mean all electrical cables which are preferably operated with an operating voltage of 20 kV and above.
