- the shaft 8 of the alternator, carrying a rotor 6, rests on bearings 7 integral with the carcass thereof and its ends protrude inside the carcasses of the turbines.
- the mobile part of the turbine 2, the impeller 9 and the mobile part of the turbine 3, the impeller 10, are fixed in cantilever on the ends of the shaft 8 projecting inside the shells turbines.
- the bearings 7 are roller and ball bearings or aerostatic gas lubrication bearings. In the latter case, the absence of lubricating oil simplifies installation.
- the impeller 9 of the turbine 2 is driven by the high pressure gas, of the order of 60 bar, brought by a supply pipe II to an inlet orifice 12.
- the high pressure gas undergoes expansion in the turbine and is evacuated therefrom by an outlet orifice 13, at a pressure of 30 bar for example.
- a pipe 14 it is then sent through an inlet orifice 15 in the low pressure turbine 3 where it undergoes a further expansion by driving the impeller 10 of the latter and exits through an outlet orifice 16 at a pressure around 15 bar. From the outlet orifice 16 the low pressure gas is sent into a distribution pipe 17 to supply industrial users.
- the seals 18 and 19 can: be greatly simplified by taking advantage of the gas escaping through them to ensure the cooling of the alternator.
- the gas is recovered and sent to the distribution pipe 17.
- the seals 18 and 19 are labyrinth seals and they are calculated from so that the gas pressure inside the alternator frame is slightly higher than the back pressure of the low pressure turbine, that is to say about 16 bar in the example considered.
- the gas at low pressure cannot penetrate into the casing of the alternator and a gas fuel is provided inside of it for cooling, which is mainly provided by the leakage rate of the turbine high pressure.
- the alternator carcass is pierced with an orifice 20 through which the gas used for cooling the alternator is evacuated and injected into line 17 through a line 21. If one judges that it is necessary to cool the stator 22 of the alternator using a water circuit it is obvious that one can cool the water in the circuit using high pressure gas before its entering the high pressure turbine.
- the current generated by the alternator is at a higher frequency than that of the utility network and it is therefore necessary to provide a frequency changer to bring it back to the frequency of this one. It is obvious that the cooling of the frequency changer can also be ensured by the gas leakage rate or by the water cooled by the gas before it enters the high pressure turbine.
