Claims (6)

1. Device for measuring the compactness of smoking articles of cylindrical form, such as cigarettes, filter cigarettes or the like, with a supply unit for conducting the articles to a positioning and dispensing assembly, characterised in that it comprises two units for measuring the compactness, mounted on either side of this assembly, which assembly comprises a path of rectilinear displacement extending from one measuring unit to the other to enable each article to move from a central position of reception towards an end measuring position, means for positioning the articles In position of reception alternately in two different angular positions and means for displacing the articles along said path alternately towards one and the other measuring unit.
2. Device according to Claim 1, in which said assembly comprises at least two drums (1, 2) which define said path therebetween, the drums being driven in rotation in the same direction so as to cause an article in contact therewith to rotate about its axis.
3. Device according to Claim 1, in which each angular position is defined by a source of light-(10, 11) associated with a detector.
4. Device according to Claim 2, in which a push member (15) is provided, subjected to moving along said path between two end positions, each corresponding to the introduction of an article in a measuring unit.
5. Device according to Claim 4, in which the push member (15) is provided with tips (16) on its two end faces so as to maintain the angular position of the articles in the course of their displacement by the push member.
6. Device according to one of Claims 4 and 5, in which the push member (15) is driven by a motor (21) via a mechanism comprising a .shaft (20) driven by the motor, a lower arm (19) fixed by one end to this shaft, a pivot (18) mounted to rotate at the other end of the lower arm, an upper arm (17) fixed by an end to the pivot (18), at the other end of which is pivotally mounted the push member (15), a fixed wheel (24) mounted about the shaft (20) a wheel (22) fast with the pivot and a notched belt (23) connecting the two wheels.
