Description

DK 181158 B1 1
Toy packaging for toy building bricks having plug studs and plug recepta- cles for a plug connection of the building bricks
The invention relates to a toy packaging according to the preamble of claim 1 and a system based on such packaging.
Toy packaging is known from e.g. US 5188221 A which discloses a packaging for building bricks, the bricks comprising a stud/sucket coupling arrangement.
The packaging comprising a container with a bottom and four side walls and a lid. However, the disadvantage of the prior art packaging is that it takes up a lot of space when stored. The present invention overcomes that disadvantage.
The invention relates in particular to packaging for building bricks, building blocks, or similar building figures and objects made of plastic in particular, sometimes of wood. Corresponding building elements are block-like in different sizes, prefera- bly with a block-like block part and preferably provided at least on one side with plug studs and mostly on the opposite side with complementary plug receptacles in a regular arrangement. Building bricks, building blocks and building figures of this type have a very high market acceptance and represent a mass product.
According to current surveys, around 90% of children in Europe and around the world play with such building elements, primarily in the age range between 2 and 12 years. These building blocks are usually made ready for dispatch in boxes made of cardboard, which are sold either via the internet or in toy shops. In order to avoid unauthorized access during transport and storage, these boxes made of cardboard are usually covered with a protective film, usually a transparent plastic film.
After use, the packaging is usually thrown away, which of course is extremely disadvantageous for environmental reasons despite the possibility of recycling such cardboard packaging. Nevertheless, this type of packaging made of card- board boxes, formed from a box-like container lower part and a cover that can be placed on it, has remained in use for these toy building blocks for decades.
DK 181158 B1 2
The inventors recognized that on the one hand that an enrichment of the toy itself, but also an environmentally friendly packaging can be provided by making the packaging for such toy building blocks or building brick part of such a building block system in such a way that the packaging itself represents part of the toy, what represents the core of the invention.
This is achieved according to the invention by the features contained in the char- acterizing part of claim 1, advantageous embodiments of the invention being characterized by the features contained in the subclaims, and by a system using such packaging. According to a further aspect, the packaging at the same time provides a toy as such, which can also be used as packaging.
According to the invention, the toy packaging is formed from a case or box-like container lower part, in particular, and is configured with a focus on toy building bricks and the like building elements, which are designed for a plug connection, and comprising plug studs in particular on one side and, for the most part, com- plementary plug receptacles on the opposite side. This lower part of the container comprises on at least part of its inner surface or, alternatively, at least part of its outer surface, a complementary stud arrangement or alternatively a complemen- tary plug receptacle arrangement imitating the building bricks or building ele- ments. It is preferred that the entire surface is equipped with this arrangement. In the simplest case, the building bricks or similar building elements can already be snapped on in the packaging, specifically on the bottom of the packaging, possi- bly also on the side edges. In this respect, the lower part of the container can be integrated, so to speak, in a system-adapted manner into a wide variety of de- signs which are possible and feasible with such building blocks and similar build- ing elements.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, at least the lower part of the container has a complementary plug receptacle design, at least on its surface directly opposite the plug stud design, that is to say in each case on the rear surface. Plug stud designs or plug receptacle designs are complementary to one another, namely in a uniform, that is to say regular, pattern, that is to say
DK 181158 B1 3 preferably in parallel longitudinal rows and in parallel transverse rows perpendic- ular thereto, and correspond to the imitations of the building blocks or building elements with corresponding plug imitations for which the packaging is used. The term “building bricks” and “building blocks” used herein is to be understood broadly within the scope of the invention and, in addition to a typical block-like or cuboid design, also includes figurative designs and the like.
In a particularly advantageous manner, the plug studs are formed on the entire inner or outer surface of the lower part of the container. In the event that plug receptacles are also provided in the lower part of the container, these are formed in accordance with the plug imitations of the building blocks on the opposite side of the plug studs, that is to say in each case on the rear surface of the individual building element, i.e. side wall or floor, and preferably also over the entire surface.
That is, if the inner surface of the lower part of the container formed from the bottom and the side walls is equipped with plug studs in a regular arrangement, the complementary plug receptacles are located on the outer surface of the lower part of the container or vice versa. This results in a universal use of the lower container part and its advantageous integration into a system of such blocks with plug imitations, which means that the packaging as such can be used within such a modular system and no longer has to be thrown away and disposed of. Rather, it is part of the sold block system and therefore preferably also a toy itself.
In an advantageous embodiment, the upper end walls of the side walls are pro- vided, at least in some areas, with plug studs, as a result of which container bot- tom parts in the stack can be latched to one another via the base and the side walls to form a stable stack assembly, which, however, can easily be released manually. This makes it easier, on the one hand, to store the individual building blocks in the playroom, so that order can be made very quickly and easily even after playing. At the same time, the container bottom parts, which act as cases or boxes, can each hold the same building blocks, so that for playing there is always a quick access to the building blocks that are currently required for the corre- sponding construction.
DK 181158 B1 4
In this context, that is to say with the stacking of the lower container parts, it is advantageous for the studs to be provided on the front edge side on the side walls, in particular in the central region of the front edges, in particular on two side walls arranged opposite one another. In this context, it is advantageous to form a flange on the respective upper end edge of the side wall, which protrudes in- wards parallel to the floor and can be used as a stand-up and latching surface when stacking lower container parts. However, this design is also useful for latch- ing the cover on the lower part of the container, so that corresponding plug re- ceptacles or plug studs on the cover side can be provided corresponding to the corresponding designs on the lower part of the container. The concept of plug studs is to be understood broadly and all stud designs are suitable which can be locked firmly but releasably with complementary plug receptacles. Preferably, cy- lindrical studs with a circular cross section projecting perpendicularly from the wall or floor surface are suitable.
It is within the scope of the invention to also provide the cover in accordance with the plug stud and/or plug receptacle designs previously described in relation to the lower part of the container, and also in a corresponding arrangement. It is within the scope of the invention to design both building elements, that is to say the lower part of the container and the cover, or, if necessary, only the cover, in which the plug stud and/or plug receptacle formation is preferably provided on the side facing the lower part of the container. However, this is not mandatory within the scope of the invention; rather, the top side of the cover can also be designed within the scope of the invention. An advantage of this embodiment is, in particular, that, due to the corresponding folding of tabs or side walls attached to the cover, a corresponding base plate for the placement of the building blocks and similar building elements of a modular system with corresponding plug imi- tations can be produced.
In this context, it is preferred that the cover is provided with corresponding latch- ing sections which, if necessary, are formed with plug studs or plug receptacles and correspond to the corresponding plug imitations on the end edges of the side
DK 181158 B1 walls and the flanges and/or on the bottom of the lower part of the container.
The side walls of the lower part of the container are designed to be foldable, with the side walls standing up on the edge of the bottom of the lower part of the 5 container in their preferred position in a preferred embodiment. The latching of lower container parts arranged in the stack is preferably carried out via the front- side plug studs and/or via the plug receptacles arranged on the edge side on the lower surface of the base. The cover can be easily locked to the top of the lower part of the container by means of suitable locking sections with either plug studs or plug receptacles. For this purpose, it is advantageous that the cover is provided with foldable folding walls on at least two opposite cover sides, which can be folded over the corresponding side walls of the lower container part after the cover has been placed on the upper side of the container lower part and, due to the latching sections in particular on the foldable folding walls, with corresponding plug imitations can be locked with the outer surfaces of the side walls or the side flaps folded down thereon from side walls. This makes it possible to form an over- all stable packaging which is easy to open manually and which, as explained above, can and is an integral part of the building element system.
The lower part of the container is preferably produced in one piece from plastic by injection molding. The connection of the foldable elements to, for example, the bottom of the lower container part is advantageously carried out via film hinges known per se. If necessary, if one-piece production can be dispensed with, hinged joints can also be used, the building elements then advantageously being able to be plugged together via the joints, that is to say the individual building elements can also be detached and exchanged from one another as needed.
If necessary, the lower container part can also be formed from other materials, such as wood, fiberboard, cardboard and the like, but plastic is particularly suita- ble.
For the cover, it is advantageous to form it either from cardboard or from plastic, if necessary, a mixed product of cardboard and plastic may also be present. It is
DK 181158 B1 6 advantageous that corresponding latching sections for the plug connection with the lower container part are integrated in the cover, which can be done by an integral design in the cover or in that the latching sections are designed and formed as plug-on or plug-in elements.
Depending on the application, it is within the scope of the invention to also form the side walls rigidly with the floor, that is to say not to make them foldable. If necessary, a cover made of plastic can also be used for the lower container part, which is formed from a cover plate and circumferentially arranged cover side walls and can thus be fitted onto the lower part. The cover then sits firmly, but releasably due to the snug fit on the lower part of the container but can also be manually lifted off the lower part of the container.
To protect against unauthorized access to the packaging, it may be advanta- geous to provide the packaging with an appropriate envelope film, which is known per se, but is advantageous within the scope of the invention.
The invention further relates to a system with a packaging according to the type described above, which is an integral part of a building element system made up of building bricks or building blocks, specifically because of the plug imitation with plug studs and/or plug receptacles formed in the packaging. The invention further relates to a toy using a packaging according to the invention.

Fig. 1 shows a case-shaped packaging 1, which is constructed in the manner of a case or a box-shaped container with a cover, the lower part of the container being denoted by 2 and the cover by 4. In the illustrated embodiment, the case or box-like container lower part 2 is made of plastic by injection molding, prefer- ably in one piece by injection molding. The cover 4 can be made of suitable card- board or plastic or - as will be described later - from both materials. Other suitable materials can optionally be used for the components of the packaging, such as wood, fiberboard, cardboard and the like.
Fig. 2 shows the container base 2 in the state of opening the container to form a
DK 181158 B1 8 functional position of a game pad. As can be seen, the lower part 2 comprises a bottom 6 and side walls 8, 10, 12 and 14 which are in the opened position in Fig. 2. The side walls 8 to 14 are connected to the bottom 6 in a hinged manner, in particular via film hinges, which makes it possible to produce the lower part 2 of the container in one piece by injection molding from plastic. The one-piece con- nection of two plastic building elements via a film hinge is known per se, so that a detailed description of such a film hinge is unnecessary here.
In the present exemplary embodiment, the side walls 8 to 14 are preferably on the bottom 6, which is rectangular here.
The side walls 8 to 14 arranged circumferentially on the floor and the bottom 6 are connected on their inner surfaces, that is to say the inside of the lower con- tainer part 2 to directed surfaces 16 with protruding studs 18, which form plug studs of a plug connection. The studs 18 are preferably arranged at a regular, in particular the same distance from one another, in particular in parallel longitudinal rows and transverse rows perpendicular thereto, that is to say each plug stud is part of a longitudinal row and a vertical row. In this respect, in the embodiment according to Fig. 2, the entire inner surface, which is formed by the bottom and the side walls 8 to 14, is preferably provided with plug studs 18 arranged in a regular pattern. The outer surface 20 of both the bottom 6 and the four side walls 8 to 14 is provided with plug receptacles 22 in a regular arrangement, the imita- tions, that is to say the arrangement of the plug receptacles 22, including their design, being complementary to the imitations and design of the plug studs 18, as is clear from the figures. The plug studs are designed so that they can be locked with the plug receptacles.
Because of this structure, the lower container part 2 is equipped for receiving toy building bricks, which are designed in blocks of different sizes and is provided on one side with corresponding plug studs and on the opposite side with correspond- ing plug receptacles, which have imitations and design that are compatible with the plug studs 18 and the plug receptacles 22 of the lower container part. That means, corresponding building blocks or building bricks or similar building
DK 181158 B1 9 elements can be arranged via a plug connection, for example on the bottom 6 and are then firmly but releasably connected as a result of the imitations by en- gagement of the plug studs in corresponding plug receptacles or vice versa by means of a latching connection.
According to Fig. 2, the opposite longitudinal side walls 8 and 12 are designed, for example only, as the longitudinal walls of the lower container part, between which the narrow side walls 10 and 14 are then arranged. The side walls are flush with one another at the corner. Preferably, the two longitudinal side walls 8 and 12 are each provided at their two lateral ends with folding flaps 24 and 26, which have the same imitations with respect to the plug studs 18 and plug receptacles 22 on the outer surface and the inner surface. This means that the outer surface 20, for example of the lower flap 24 shown in Fig. 2, has plug receptacles 22 on the side facing the viewer, whereas the inner surface 16, in the assembled state, is directed inward towards the lower part of the container 16 plug studs 18. As a result, after the foldable side walls 8 to 14 have been erected into the position shown in Fig. 2 a locking or latching takes place by folding the corresponding side flaps 24, 26 onto the outer surface of the narrow side walls 10 and 14, so that the plug studs 18 formed on the inner surface of the flaps 24 and 26 reach plug en- gagement with the plug receptacles 22 formed on the outer surface of the narrow side walls 10 and 14. This latching connection of the packaging is extremely sta- ble, but can also be easily released manually, which is done by simply opening the side flaps 24 and 26. As soon as these are opened, the lower container part 2 can be transferred to the position of a plate-like game pad shown in Fig. 3, in which the bottom, the side walls and the flaps lie in one plane. The game pad shown in Fig. 3 can then serve as a pad for attaching the building blocks provided with the corresponding plug receptacles.
According to Fig. 3, flanges 28 projecting upwards are formed in the edge-side central area of each longitudinal side wall 8, 12, which flanges widen the upper end edges 30 of the longitudinal side walls 8, 12 towards the inside in the upright position of the side walls, that is to say in the direction of the interior of the con- tainer. These flanges 28 are formed on one side with complementary plug studs
DK 181158 B1 10 and preferably on the opposite side with plug receptacles, or vice versa, so that the same imitations result as with the other building elements of the lower part of the container.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the end edges 30 are also preferably pro- vided with plug studs 18 projecting upwards. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the flanges 28 are provided with plug receptacles on the surface facing inwards in the direction of the bottom 6 and on the outer surface with plug studs corresponding to the design on the end edges 30 of the side walls.
This design of the end edges 30 and the widening flanges 28 with corresponding plug studs enables a stable stacking of several boxes one above the other, as can be seen from Figs. 5 and 6, but also a latching of the cover 4, as will be described further below.
From Fig. 4 it can be seen that the game pad can be expanded as desired by plugging further unfolded container lower parts 2 together; in the exemplary em- bodiment shown in Fig. 4, these are two unfolded container lower parts which form a stable game pad as a result of the plug connection. The game pad can be enlarged as required by adding and clipping on further opened container lower parts.
Fig. 5 shows stacked lower container parts 2, a plug connection with the bottom of a lower container part located in the stack above being possible because of the studs arranged on the end face on the side walls and the flanges 28, that is to say a stable stack of such boxes can be formed. This allows a wide variety of building blocks to be accommodated in a practical manner.
As shown in Fig. 6, any staggered stacking can take place as a result of the latching assembly, which enables a stacked assembly in staggered arrangement of the boxes when playing, and thus access to, for example, various building blocks or building bricks. Such an arrangement can also be used as a toy for a tower-like construction.
DK 181158 B1 11
Fig. 7 finally shows the cover 4 in a functional position to form a cover which is firmly seated on the lower part of the container. For this purpose, the cover is provided on two opposite sides with two folding walls 32 and 34 which are hinged to the cover 4. These folding walls 32 and 34 can also be seen from Fig. 1, where the folding walls are not yet in the folded-down position.
Fig. 8 shows the cover 4 from the bottom, that is, the surface facing the lower part of the container in the attached position of the cover. As can be seen, each folding wall has latching sections 36 at the lateral ends, here four in total on the cover 4, which are provided with plug studs 18 corresponding to the design of the lower container part 2, whereas 4 latching sections 38 are arranged or formed on the two longitudinal sides of the cover, which are formed with locking recesses 22. This configuration is only by way of example and is in no way restrictive.
In this respect, when the cover according to Fig. 7 is put on and the two folding walls 32, 34 are folded down onto the narrow side walls, a latching between the folding walls and the lower part of the container can take place, as can a latching of the cover in the area of the central latching sections 38. Folding down the fold- ing walls results in a locking engagement in the manner of a plug connection of the plug studs 18 of the latching sections 36 with the plug recesses 22 of the flaps 24 and 26, as well as a plug connection between the upstanding plug studs 18 provided on the flanges 28 of the lower container part with the plug receptacles of the latching sections 38, so that, as can be seen from Fig. 9, a stable snap fit of the cover 4 on the lower container part 2 is ensured, which, however, can be easily opened if necessary to allow access to the container contents.
That is, in accordance with the invention, packaging can be simply opened by unfolding the lower part of the container into a game pad or transform toys that can be expanded as required. In addition, a stable packaging for the storage of building bricks or building blocks is possible and at the same time a quick opening and closing of the lower part of the container via the cover 4.
In the illustrated embodiment, the alignment of the plug studs is such that they
DK 181158 B1 12 are arranged on the inner surface of the lower part of the container. However, an inverted arrangement is also possible, that is to say the formation of plug recep- tacles on the inner surface and the formation of the plug studs on the correspond- ing outer surface, which then also results in an inverted arrangement of studs and receptacles in the side flaps and on the end edges of the lower part of the con- tainer and on the locking sections of the cover. Both embodiments are possible, but within the scope of the invention the embodiment or stud arrangement as shown in Figs. 1 to 9 is preferred.
The cover 4 can be made of cardboard or plastic, the folding walls preferably being connected to the cover 4 via film hinges. The latching sections 36 and 38 are preferably made of plastic, but can also be used in a cardboard box design of the cover 4 by inserting them there into the cover 4 as plug members, so that then also on the upper side of the cover in Fig. 7 the locking sections, but then there with the reverse formation of locking studs or locking recesses. This is use- ful, but in no way mandatory. In the case of the design of the cover 4 as a card- board box instead of plastic, the locking sections can also be formed in the card- board box with the corresponding studs and locking recesses.
Fig. 10 shows a partial view for the film hinge of an alternative hinged connection for the building elements of the lower part, that is to say a hinged connection between the side wall and the floor, specifically via hinge joints which are known per se. In the illustrated embodiment, the joints can be clipped into one another.
Fig. 11 finally shows a further embodiment, in which the lower container part 2 corresponds to the lower container part in the previous embodiments. In a modi- fication of the previous embodiments, the cover 4 is made of plastic with a cover plate 40 and peripheral cover side walls 42, which, as can be seen from Fig. 12, can be placed across the bottom part of the container. Through the design of the cover, that is to say a corresponding spacing of the side walls 42, a firm plug seat between the cover 40 and the lower container part 2 can be achieved, but this can also be solved in a simple manner in order to enable quick and easy access to the container contents at any time.
DK 181158 B1 13
The packaging is advantageously packed with a customary packaging film, so that it is made ready for dispatch, so that unauthorized access is not possible during transport and dispatch or can easily be recognized later. Since such pack- aging films are known in various designs, no explicit description is required here.
Fig. 12 shows a stack of boxes arranged one above the other, each formed from the lower container part 2 and the cover 4. It should be noted here that although the exemplary embodiments are described with foldable side walls, a rigid struc- ture of the lower part of the container and also of the cover is also possible if necessary, but with the consequence that the universal character of the layout does not then come into play in the manner shown in the exemplary embodiments above, which are provided with foldable side walls.
