Abstract

The device has a pair of spark gaps (4, 6) connected in parallel circuit paths (1, 2). The second spark gap (6) has a higher response voltage threshold than the first spark gap (4), which is connected in series with an impedance (5). The overall voltage drop across the first spark gap and the impedance is greater than the response voltage threshold of the second spark gap, the latter pref. having a greater current conductivity and an electrode spacing (6c) which is between 5 and 10 times greater than the electrode spacing (4c) of the first spark gap.
