DEUTSCHES PATENTAMTGERMAN PATENT OFFICE
The invention relates to a method for producing an adhesive for a 'pressure sensitive Adhesive tape with improved adhesive properties at low temperatures and improved holding properties at high temperatures. The pressure-sensitive adhesive layer consists of a known one Way from a mixture of tackifying resin with practically completely undegraded rubber polymer.
Es muß augenblicklich und fest auf PapierThe pressure-sensitive adhesive tape made according to the invention serves above all else Place the paper tape to be moistened with water to close corrugated cardboard boxes. In order to be useful for such purposes, the pressure sensitive adhesive tape unwind easily from rolls so that it can be machine applied and used well can. It must be instant and firm on paper

Das druckempfindliche Klebeband haftet schnell und fest bei leichtem Druck auf bedruckten und gewachsten Papierflächen wie auch auf unbehan-or corrugated cardboard using only moderate Glue pressure, it must also adhere firmly to such surfaces, if by the spring force of the corrugated cardboard a continuous tension is exerted and it must eventually under all conditions of the Adhere firmly to storage and handling. One made in accordance with the present invention Adhesive tape meets these requirements and is able to close cardboard boxes quickly and effectively, without having to be moistened beforehand or made adhesive in any other way. The pressure-sensitive adhesive tape adheres quickly and firmly to printed and light pressure waxed paper surfaces as well as on untreated
delter Wellpappe. The bond holds good at both high and low temperatures.
Dieses Walzen oder sonstige Abbauen des natürlichen Kautschuks istSo far, pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes are based on natural rubber and resin-like Adhesives by combining these two components in solution in a volatile solvent, together with antioxidants and other desired processing materials been. Usually pigments and other insoluble additives are added prior to dissolution the rubber is rolled into it, this rolling to improve the solubility of the rubber and contributes to reducing the viscosity of the solution. This rolling or other degradation of natural rubber is
für wesentlich gehalten worden, um sowohl dem Klebmittelüberzug eine gewisse Gleichmäßigkeithas been considered essential to both the adhesive coating and a certain uniformity
und Geschmeidigkeit zu verleihen als auch die Löslichkeit der Kautschukkomponente zu fördern.and to impart suppleness as well as to promote the solubility of the rubber component.
The invention proposes a process for the production of pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes based on rubber-resin, in which the rubber remains practically undegraded. In the inventive method, the rollers or a similar gearteter degradation of the rubber is omitted, while on the other hand, the production are also greatly improved application of the adhesive composition from an economical viewpoint. The adhesive mass does not contain any additional water-soluble components, as a result of which the dried film is extremely resistant to moisture or even water itself. The dried adhesive film is far more resistant to softening at elevated temperatures than at. Adhesives of the same composition, but which have been manufactured according to the usual process, which lead to a degradation or deterioration of the rubber. Surprisingly, the adhesive tape of the invention is also able to withstand shock at low temperatures far better than the usual pressure-sensitive adhesive products made from a more or less degraded rubber by dissolving it in a volatile organic solvent.
Attempts have been made to use pressure sensitive adhesives of this type, i.e. Rubber-resin base, in which the rubber remains in the undegraded state, but the methods used so far have no fij Composition result, as a homogeneous solution of rubber and resin in a solvent could be addressed. Only aqueous dispersions of rubber were obtained and resin parts.
With the method according to the invention, however, such a homogeneous solution of rubber is obtained and resin is generated in a solvent.
In this process, 100 parts by weight of virtually undegraded rubber with 30 to 20.0 parts by weight of a heat-softening resinous tackifier mixed homogeneously, wherein the rubber is in the form of an aqueous latex and the resinous tackifier be introduced in the form of a solution in a volatile solvent, which is a swelling agent for the rubber is.
In a preferred embodiment, a further process step to the homogeneous Mixture of rubber and the resinous tackifier quickly and with vigorous stirring . given a volatile organic liquid that is miscible with the solvent, but the rubber does not swell, to make the homogeneous mixture of a dispersion smaller more indistinct Droplets in a smooth homogeneous viscous rubbery To convert liquid.
To this solution, 167 parts were slowly concentrated with vigorous stirring Hevea latex with 60 percent by weight rubber. The latex was distributed in small indefinite indistinct droplets evenly through the whole resin solution. To this mixture a solution of 2 parts of an alkylated polyoxyphenol was obtained with continued vigorous stirring (Antioxidant) given in 100 parts of denatured alcohol. This occurred in the Solution made a quick change: the droplets disappeared, and the whole mass became uniform, looked milky and showed rubber- n » viscosity. In a volume of about 2 liters, this conversion occurred in less than 1 minute. at larger quantities require slightly longer times, apparently only with speed and mixing efficiency. In this process, a Appropriately sized high speed propeller stirrers have been found to be particularly effective.
So z. B. the different components can be processed simultaneously with each other, or one can use the solid substances dissolve beforehand in the volatile solvents and then mix them with the latex in any order

kombinieren. The alcohol, however, should not be combined directly with the latex before not the latter has been brought into contact with the heptane.
B. derThe alcohol serves to reduce the viscosity of the mixture and therefore allows higher concentrations on solids in the liquid adhesive. The alcohol also speeds production of the adhesive considerably. If z. B. the
Der Alkohol dient ferner zur Einführung verschiedener Bestandteile, wie z.B. der im Beispiel ι genannten Antioxydationsmittel, die in Alkohol löslich, aber in Heptan unlöslich sind.ίο alcohol is omitted in the example above, The mixture of heptane and latex takes several hours to get out of the state of a Droplet dispersion to pass into that of a rubbery solution; the viscosity is in this .Fall zju high, than that the mass converts properly could. The alcohol also serves to introduce various components, such as the one in the example ι mentioned antioxidants, which are soluble in alcohol but insoluble in heptane.
Antioxidants or the like, which are soluble in heptane, can of course be used together with the tackifying agents Resins can be dissolved directly in the heptane.
,The ethyl alcohol of Example 1 can just as easily be replaced by isobutyl or isopropyl alcohol will. ,
Heptan ist ein flüchtiges Lösungsmittel, das in technischen Klebstoffen auf Kautschukbasis in großem Umfange angewandt worden ist; wegenHeptane is a volatile solvent found in rubber-based engineering adhesives has been used to a great extent; because
It is particularly preferred for its high volatility and the fact that it is free of residues. But other 'solvents are also effective, e.g. B. gasoline, benzene or toluene and Carbon tetrachloride.
According to the recipe given in Example 1, equal parts by weight of the tackifying Resin and rubber. You can change these proportions within wide limits; you can z. B. from 30 parts of resin (to 100 parts of rubber) up to 150 or even 200 parts of resin apply to 100 parts of rubber. That depends on both the resin and the rubber as well on the nature and amount of additives and the special properties that the adhesive film has should have.
»Piccolyte S-85« ist ein aus einem reinen Terpenkohlenwasserstoff durch Polymerisation entstandenes thermoplastisches Harz vom Schmelzpunkt 850, das sich als klebrigmachendes Harz sowohl"Piccolyte S-85" is a thermoplastic resin formed from a pure terpene hydrocarbon by polymerization with a melting point of 85 0 , which is both a tackifying resin

The natural rubber swells and disperses in heptane, mixing with a large number of the various tackifying resins, forms permanently tacky adhesives of high internal Strength and is available in large quantities; Hevea latex is therefore preferred. In latex form Many synthetic rubber-like polymers are also available; but in general their internal strength is lower, they do not swell or distribute themselves well in or contain heptane undesirably large amounts of soaps or other dispersants or are difficult to use in the adhesive State or for other reasons less expedient. It should, however it should be pointed out that in certain cases latexes of high molecular weight, more soluble, synthetic Rubbers can be combined with Hevea latex or can even replace it, to heat-resistant, shock-resistant, strong and firmly adhering pressure-sensitive adhesives according to to arrive at the principles of the present invention.
The water content of the latex remains in the rubbery adhesive, apparently in shape extremely fine droplets, dispersed. The water causes an extraordinarily low level Swelling and puckering of the moisture-sensitive adhesive tape bases, e.g. B. of cellophane, so that one under tension, z. B. on steam-heated drums, must dry, to get a smooth sheet or ribbon. Heavier documents or porous materials such as paper or fabric, can be coated without difficulty. Also moisture-proof films or Foils, e.g. B. polyester film or aluminum foil, optionally previously advantageously with an adhesive primer are coated can also be coated with the adhesive compositions according to the invention without difficulty. the small amount of water in the adhesive coating is insufficient for the formation of a pliable one uniform layer of the adhesive, which is essentially soluble in organic solvents to prevent such documents.
However, the presence of the water has a great and important influence on the cleaning the spreading and coating device. Typical solvent-based adhesives adhere tightly Metal surfaces, as they occur in such devices on rollers, containers and the like, and must washed off with the appropriate solvent. The liquid adhesives of the present Invention, however, do not adhere firmly to metal as long as they are not fully dried up, and can therefore can simply be wiped off without difficulty. This will clean up the device extremely relieved.

The clay was added to the latex. In the alcohol it became Dissolved antioxidant. The order in which the three liquid mixtures were mixed was the same as in example i. The transition from flowable to the viscous rubber-like state proceeded somewhat less quickly than in the example ι; an approach of i, 8 1 took 3.0 seconds, while the compilation of example 1 for the same conversion only took 10 seconds. The adhesive was treated on a Fiber backing applied and when dried resulted in a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape with substantially lower bond strength than in example 1; but the adhesiveness was sufficient to hold the tape to adhere firmly to corrugated cardboard and other surfaces. A test at elevated temperatures found that this adhesive had an internal strength higher than that of Example i.
Similar results can be obtained by first using the sound - instead of the Latex - premixed with the heptane solution. Besides clay, other substances can be used in the usual way Be added in ways such as hydrated aluminum oxide, hydrous aluminum silicate and zinc oxide. In general, pigments and fillers of the type mentioned increase the temperature resistance. and lower the bond strength value of the resulting adhesive film. The lanolin works as a plasticizer for the adhesive and improves both the bond strength value and the ability of the adhesive film to be removed smoothly from a test surface, so that the unrolling of a Stripping force required from a roll is not increased. For lanolin or instead of it tricresyl phosphate, dioctyl phthalate, mineral oil and the like plasticizers, etc. can be used in small amounts Quantities are given with approximately the same results.
In addition to the above-mentioned films and foils, both treated and untreated, flexible, fibrous sheets are useful supports for the pressure sensitive adhesive. To the Closing cardboard boxes is particularly suitable using an adhesive tape with a fiber base, in which the paper-forming fibers are easy to use before the actual production of the sheet have been pretreated with a neoprene (polychloroprene) latex; the porous dried leaf is then on one side with a backing compound of low adhesive value and on the opposite side covered with the pressure-sensitive adhesive. That way The resulting adhesive tape is strong, flexible and tough, can be rolled up in roll form and without stripping or peeling off of the adhesive layer and the like again. unwound, adheres well Corrugated cardboard and sticks to it even under tension at high temperatures, so set up for that Sealing boxes are extremely useful pressure sensitive adhesive tape. Useful fiber backing can be made by similar procedures also with the help of other polymeric substances, e.g. B. butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber polymers, getting produced; or a preformed paper can easily be treated with these or other solution or emulsion polymers. Typical, only slightly adhesive backing compounds are given in German patent 872620 and in the German patent application ρ 30316 IVa / 22 i D described.
In beiden Fällen betrug das Verhältnis von klebrigmachendem Harz zu Kautschuk 90 : 100.The effectiveness of the practically completely undegraded rubber in the production is superior pressure sensitive adhesives is illustrated by the following test results. Sample A represents a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape with an adhesive from practically completely undegraded rubber using Hevea latex, which is used in connection with Example ι was produced by the method described here. Sample B is similar to Sample A. identical, only here a "latex crepe" was used as the rubber. H. a pre-precipitated Hevea latex rubber in the form of a dry sheet passed through a rubber mill only a few times had been sent to make the rubber dispersible in heptane. In both cases the ratio of tackifier was Resin to rubber 90: 100.

In the suspension test, the samples of the adhesive tapes were placed on vertical flat polished steel surfaces adhesively attached to a 1.2 X 1.2 cm area, then attached to the free lower end A kilogram weight was attached to the tape and the time was measured that elapsed before the tape from the area was demolished. From the results, it can be seen that Sample A was more than 100 times as long how sample B adhered to the steel surface.
In the stress test, heavy butcher wrapping paper was used for wrapping The package is glued in the same way with the two different adhesive strips, then in put in a freezer compartment until - as with food preservation -. thoroughly cooled were, and finally taken out and continuously tumbled and thrown around. With Packets glued to strip A remained tightly closed throughout the test most of the packets sealed and sealed with strip B remained during overturning the parcel opened because the adhesive layer had become brittle.
Resin (instead of the 100 parts in Example 1 85 were used here) and the use of a high-melting resin should result in an improvement in the heat resistance of the adhesive. The test carried out at different temperatures showed that the internal strength of the adhesive made with practically completely undegraded rubber (sample C) was far superior to that of the adhesive made with only slightly kneaded rubber (sample D). In this test method, the adhesive surfaces were pressed firmly against the same surfaces, the adhesive or contact surface : again 1.2 X i, 2 cm and the suspended load again 1 kg. The bond strength values of the two strips to be compared, which were measured as the tension required to remove the strip from a smooth steel surface, were also determined.
As according to the invention, a new printing ' Sensitive adhesive tape based on rubber-resin described in which the rubber component the adhesive layer is practically completely undegraded, whereby an adhesive is obtained which adheres firmly to surfaces to which it is applied under conditions among which other directly applied and comparable pressure-sensitive adhesives and Adhesive tapes fail. The invention also proposes a new method of making the above labeled pressure-sensitive adhesives, in which kneading or other degradation processes can be avoided and in which the mixing in a remarkably short time and is carried out completely adequately with the simplest device imaginable.
