Description
If pyrophoric mixed metal-iron alloys are melted at 100 to 1200 0 and cast in cast-iron molds preheated to about 600 to 700 0, then cast bolts are obtained. These are subjected to extrusion deformation at around 450 0 in order to obtain strands of flint from them, which are then divided into the commercially available lengths. Depending on the iron content of the alloys and the quality of mischmetal processed, different pressures are necessary for extrusion molding. As the iron content rises, the maximum required pressure increases considerably. However, the pressing pressure is also significantly influenced by the different degree of contamination of the processed mixed metal type, which is dependent on the chemical composition of the processed ore. The greater the degree of contamination of the misch metal, the higher it increases.
Die verbesserte Wirkung dieser Metallzusätze beruht auf zwei allgemeinenExtensive tests have shown that it is possible by mixing and alloying Metals related to the pyrophoric mixed metal-iron alloys, their molar heat of formation on ι gram atom of oxygen, roughly the same is large or larger than that of cerium, the pressing pressure in the extrusion molding is entirely to reduce significantly. The improved effect of these metal additives is due to two general principles
Voraussetzungen. Requirements. So that the compression pressure is lowered during extrusion molding, it is necessary to that the internal friction of the metal to be pressed in the extrusion process is reduced will. This is possible because disturbing impurities, z. B. oxides, nitrides, hydrides or similar impurities that are either in the mischmetal are contained themselves or through the desired alloy additions - in the case of the pyrophoric ίο mixed metal-iron alloys e.g. B. Iron - are introduced into the cast press bolt, eliminated or removed. In the case of certain metal additives, a pure alloying effect a lowering of the inner Achieved friction and thereby reduced the pressure.
Diese Tabelle entstammt der Arbeit von W. Dautzenberg, »Zur Metallurgie des metallothermischen Schmelzens«, aus der Zeitschrift für Erzbergbau und Metallhüttenwesen, 1950, Bd, 3, S. 342 bis 345.According to the invention, therefore, pyrophoric mixed metal-iron alloys are used with an iron content of 4.5 to 40% to reduce the pressing pressure in the extrusion molding such metals in amounts of more than 0.3 to 10%, preferably from 0.6 to i%, added or alloyed, their molar heat of formation, based on ι gram atom of oxygen, at least 110, as can be seen from the table below. This table comes from the work of W. Dautzenberg, "On the metallurgy of metallothermal melting", from the journal for ore mining and metallurgy, 1950, vol, 3, pp. 342 to 345.

Darüber hinaus r/ird aber auch durch eine reine Legierungseinwiikung des betreffenden Metallzusatzes die innere Reibung' bei der Strangpreß verformung erniedrigt und dadurchThe cleaning is particularly pronounced and at the same time on the alloying effect of titanium, but also the other metals, e.g. B. zirconium, aluminum, Barium, beryllium, magnesium or calcium alone or in a mixture achieve this same or similar effect. The task of the added metals is to reduce the pressure mainly in the cleaning of the metal bath from undesired components. the The effectiveness of the additive in the case of cleaning is based on its affinity for the one to be removed Component that must be almost the same or greater than that of the base metal this substance to be removed and carried over into the slag. Beyond that, however, also the internal friction is contributed by a pure alloying of the metal additive in question the extrusion deformation decreased and thereby

The improving. Effect of Titan and others Metals is based, as flawless series tests have shown, on both possibilities. Of the The mechanism of this surprising effect has not yet been fully explored in detail and in general Valid statements can - apart from titanium and the other metals mentioned - on Reason for overriding meal physical laws are not yet given.
The addition of titanium in ignition metals based on mischmetal-iron with an iron content of 25 to 40% is the subject of a procedure that is not yet part of the state of the art Addition of 0.05 to 0.3% titanium or zirconium or a mixture of these to pyrophoric mixed metal-iron alloys but there it has the sole purpose of increasing the grain size of the pyrophoric type of crystal so far refine that the extrusion process even with higher iron contents, z. B. from 25 to 40%, allows without the pyrophoricity of the alloy suffering. This grain refinement but has nothing to do with the inventive reduction of the pressure or .dem cleaning and alloying addition of titanium to pyrophoric mischmetal-iron alloys with a Iron content from 4.5 to 40%.
Furthermore, it is known to produce pyrophoric masses in such a way that small-sized, anoxidized rare earth metals with other metals ·, z. B. vanadium, molybdenum, titanium or tungsten, pressed together and then sintered. The addition of these metals only serves to change the hardness and the specific weight of the sintered alloy. A cleaning and alloying effect of the added metals to melted ingots of pyrophoric mixed metal solder > iron alloys for the purpose of lowering the pressure during extrusion deformation is neither known nor to be inferred from these references.

The addition according to the invention of titanium and the other metals mentioned to the mischmetal-iron alloys with iron contents of 4.5 to 40% is of great practical importance for the production of ignition metal strands for the various fields of application. By reducing the amount required for extrusion deformation maximum necessary pressure in the heat not only facilitates the practical processing of this type of alloy, but also the durability of the this required pressing tools increased significantly.
