The invention relates to a single- or multi-layer surface film for laminating onto wood, plastic, metal or other substrates, which has a colored or uncolored and/or patterned base film based on a thermoplastic, which optionally contains processing aids, colorants, stabilizers and other conventional additives.
A surface film of the type described above is disclosed, among other things, in EP-A-0 343 491. It is intended to be applied to the surfaces of objects, e.g. doors, frames, housings made of plastic, wood, wood materials, metals or similar materials or substrates, in colored, uncolored and/or patterned form in order to offer protection against various adverse influences, such as corrosion, discoloration due to light or mechanical impact. In some circumstances, it is also intended to make the surface more attractive. For example, such a patterned film or surface lamination can give the impression of valuable wood, even though the starting material used is actually unsuitable for this purpose due to its nature, structure, surface or color.
Selbst wenn dieses Material schlagzäh eingestellt wird, liefert es nur eineThe surface film shown in EP-A-0 343 491 has a base film made of a polymer from the methacrylate group. The polymer can be modified by adding polyacrylates. A polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) made flexible by polybutyl methacrylate (PBMA) is said to be particularly suitable. The known surface film is said to have improved light and weather resistance. An examination of this film has shown that it needs improvement. For example, a flexible PMMA shows a relatively high stress whitening. Even if this material is made impact-resistant, it only provides a

It also shows unsatisfactorily low wettability and surface tension values. High surface tension values are important for the printability of the base film and for the bondability (adhesion between an adhesive layer and the base film) if it is to be glued to a substrate. A base film made of PMMA only has a surface tension of 36 to 38 dyn/cm (measured according to DIN 53 364).
Based on the state of the art described above, the invention was based on the task of developing the surface film described at the beginning in such a way that, in particular, the surface tension values of the base film are increased, its notched impact strength is improved and its stress whitening is prevented as far as possible.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the thermoplastic contains an ABS copolymer and polycaprolactone, with about 1 to 16 parts by weight of polycaprolactone being used for 100 parts by weight of ABS copolymer with an MFI (220°C/10kg) of about 2 to 12. Preferably, about 4 to 8 parts by weight, in particular 5.5 to 6.5 parts by weight of polycaprolactone are used for about 100 parts by weight of ABS copolymer.
The essential characteristic of the present invention is the content of the base film in a plastic mixture that contains an ABS copolymer and polycaprolactone. For the purposes of the invention, the term "thermoplastic" includes plastic mixtures, polymer blends, polymer alloys or graft copolymers and the like. The ABS copolymer represents the "hard" component in this plastic mixture, while the polycaprolactone represents the "softer" component, which is essential for the calenderability.
Unter den elastomer-The thermoplastic used in the invention is preferably an ABS copolymer with an MFI (220 °C/10 kg) of about 4 to 8 and in particular an elastomer-modified thermoplastic. Among the elastomer-modified thermoplastics, styrene copolymers, in particular elastomer-modified styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymers are preferred. Among the elastomer-
The rubber-grafted SAN copolymers are preferably rubber-grafted SAN copolymers, in particular butadiene-acrylic ester, EPDM or acrylic ester rubber-grafted products, with a SAN copolymer grafted with butyl acrylate rubber being particularly preferred. Preferably, an acrylonitrile-butyl acrylate copolymer is added to the elastomer-modified thermoplastic, since a particular advantage is achieved when about 40 parts by weight of acrylonitrile-butyl acrylate copolymer are used for about 100 parts by weight of elastomer-modified thermoplastic. The importance of the elastomer-modified styrene copolymer used advantageously according to the invention lies in the fact that it can be used to regulate the stiffness (ε-modulus), the hardness and the tensile strength, depending on the respective application part.

The properties of the base film can be modified by further additives that are incorporated into the thermoplastic material.
In the plastic, for example, fillers such as metal oxide, metal carbonates, especially calcium carbonate and dolomite, metal dioxides and metal hydroxides, lubricants such as C12-C36 fatty acids, fatty alcohols, fatty acid esters and amides, colorants in the form of color pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide or carbon black, as well as organic dyes, stabilizers such as oxidation retarders and heat stabilizers, e.g. sterically hindered phenols, hydroquinones, substituted representatives of this group and mixtures thereof, UV stabilizers, e.g. various substituted resorcinols, salicylates, benzotriazoles and benzophenones, as well as other common modifiers can be added. Processing aids such as high molecular weight acrylates or acrylate copolymers, such as the commercial product Paraloid K-125, can also be used as additives. They control the flow properties and the melting process during processing. The base film can be produced from the starting mixture containing the above-mentioned compounds using any technique, such as extrusion, calendering, etc.
Auch können ohne weiteres Deckschichten herangezogenThe design of the top layer is not crucial for the desired effects. It can be a standard cover film or a layer of varnish. Top layers can also be used without any problem.
These are characterized by good mechanical properties, such as tear resistance, impact strength, scratch resistance and chemical resistance as well as paintability in the event of repairs. The cover layer can be polyacrylate, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyvinyl fluoride (PVF), polycarbonate and polyester films and the like. The cover film can be applied to the base film by suitable lamination.
The surface film according to the invention can be used to achieve the desired physical properties, such as high notched impact strength and high surface tension, with the extensive exclusion of stress whitening. It therefore has surface tensions of around 46 to 52 dyn/cm (according to DIN 53 364). These are significantly higher than those achieved with surface films of the state of the art described at the beginning (36 to 38 dyn). High surface tension values improve printability when applying colored patterns, for example, and adhesion to an adhesive layer. In addition, the surface film according to the invention is characterized by favorable values for the modulus of elasticity, tensile strength, hardness, light fastness and hot light fastness.
The invention is characterized by a number of other advantages. Copolymers containing styrene are mainly used as raw materials. These have the advantage that the processing temperatures of the films produced from them are in the same order of magnitude as those of PVC films (approximately 65 to 95°C). In addition, the material can be made light- and weather-resistant. The possibility of applying varnish ensures chemical resistance. Different color tones can be achieved using plasticizer/pigment batches. The material can be calendered and extruded on the existing production systems. The surface is decorated in different ways using an embossing device. Within the scope of the invention, no use of metal or sulfur-containing compounds is required for the stabilizers to achieve the desired effects, as is absolutely necessary for plastic mixtures containing PVC.
SchließlichA further advantage of the film according to the invention is its improved ageing behavior when exposed to dark heat (without exposure to light). Finally
Within the scope of the invention, the desired hardness can also be advantageously optimized, so that the sensitivity to writing and scratching is favorably influenced. The surface film according to the invention can be laminated onto different substrates in a variety of ways. It is possible to carry out the lamination and deformation simultaneously, for example with non-flat surfaces. Appropriate devices work with membranes, air pressure and deformation rollers, for example.
The special composition of the film according to the invention, in particular due to the preferably used elastomer-modified styrene copolymer, leads to the possibility of concealing undercuts (deep-cut shapes) in one processing step.
The invention will be explained in more detail below using examples.
