In process measurement technology, different methods and arrangements are used to determine the moisture content of granular bulk materials. Microwave measuring devices represent a favorable compromise between costs, measurement accuracy and measurement speed. Transmission or reflection methods are usually used. Transmission methods have the advantage that they allow the moisture content to be determined not only on the surface but also in the depth of the material being measured.

Tiuri, M.,

1980, p.79 ff., basic arrangements for determining the moisture content of a material to be measured from the attenuation or phase shift of free space waves or conduction waves caused by this are given. The article Microwave moisture meter FXD 753 for sand processing. Microwave Magazine 3 (1977), p.224-225, describes an attenuation measuring arrangement for determining moisture. The disadvantage of pure attenuation measuring devices is the great dependence of the measured values on the structure, density, temperature and conductivity of the material to be measured. Tiuri, M., Jokela, K., Heikkilä, S.: Microwave Instrumentation for Accurate
Moisture and Density Measurement of Timber. Moisture and Density Measurement of Timber. The Journal of Microwave Power 15 (1980), pp.251-254, suggest determining the temperature with an infrared measuring device and the density with a gamma radiation probe. With the former, the moisture content of the material being measured is included in the temperature measurement, the latter is not suitable for industrial moisture measurement for reasons of occupational health and safety.
In Kraszewski, A., Kulinski, S.: An Improved Microwave Method of Moisture Content Measurement and Control. A value that depends on the humidity but not on the density is obtained, for example, when two density-dependent parameters of the measured material such as attenuation and phase shift are measured and the quotient is formed from these measured values. In Kraszewski, A., Kulinski, S.: An Improved Microwave Method of Moisture Content Measurement and Control. IEEE-IECI 23 (1976) No.4, an arrangement is described with which it is possible to measure attenuation and phase shift 2U. For this purpose, a homodyne mixture is carried out between the measurement and reference signal, whereby the reference signal was previously modulated. If the phase of the reference signal is influenced with a phase shifter so that the output voltage of the homodyne mixer is always maximum, the amplitude can be determined from the mixer output signal and the phase of the measurement signal can be determined from the position of the phase shifter. The disadvantage of this arrangement is the large number of microwave modules required, which is associated with high costs.
In Morgeneier, K.-D., Kupfer, K.: Report on performance level G4 of the FE topic "Moisture measurement on aggregates for the production of concrete mixtures", HAB Weimar, Section for Building Materials Process Engineering, WB Automation Technology, 1989, a microwave measuring bridge is presented that also allows the attenuation and phase shift caused by the material being measured to be determined. The microwave split into reference and measurement signals is then brought together again in a multi-probe arrangement, so that phase information is obtained in addition to the attenuation information obtained by adjustable attenuation elements. Another disadvantage here is the large amount of microwave assemblies required, especially those with moving parts.
Another measuring device that makes it possible to measure two density-dependent material parameters appears in US 4361801, a patent document that refers to DE 2928487. The microwaves generated in a generator are divided into a measuring and a reference branch and converted to an intermediate frequency, at which attenuation and phase information can be obtained much more easily than in the microwave range. The proportion of microwave components in the overall device remains small. The disadvantage of this arrangement is that other material parameters that influence the quality of the measurement, such as temperature, conductivity or the structure of the material being measured, are not taken into account. Other literature references that refer to the problem of microwave moisture measurement that is independent of the environmental parameters are, for example, DD 251622, where an additional density determination using a load cell is proposed (hardly justifiable mechanical effort) or US 4311957, where an arrangement based on phase measurement is proposed (can only be used for small-sized particles).
Der im Anspruch 1 angegebenen Erfindung liegt die Aufgabe zugrunde, eine Vorrichtung zur Bestimmung der Feuchte von grob- und feinkörnigen Schüttgütern, insbesondere Zuschlagstoffen der Bauindustrie, zu schaffen, dieThe invention specified in claim 1 is based on the object of creating a device for determining the moisture content of coarse and fine-grained bulk materials, in particular aggregates in the construction industry, which

Die genaue Feuchtemessung hat direkte und indirekte Vorteile:The invention can be used to measure the moisture content of coarse and fine-grained bulk materials in online operation in construction, industry and agriculture. The precise moisture measurement has direct and indirect advantages:

The object of the invention is achieved in that a combination of microwave transmitter and receiver measures the transmission parameters of a microwave measuring section at a fixed frequency of 2.45 GH2 and a control computer converts these measurement signals together with measurement signals for the temperature and conductivity of the material being measured into a measurement signal equivalent to the moisture content of the material. When correcting the measured value, the control computer also takes into account correction signals corresponding to the structure of the respective material being measured, which are generated by a memory bank. The memory bank can have several sectors that can be switched over by a higher-level control system, so that correction signals can be generated for several different materials being measured.
The signal obtained from the measurement and correction signals, which is equivalent to the moisture content of the material being measured, is made available at an interface for further processing in a higher-level system and on the display.
An embodiment is explained using Figure 1, which shows the block diagram of an arrangement for measuring the moisture content of concrete aggregates.

In a microwave block, microwaves are generated by an oscillator 1 stabilized by a phase-locked loop 3, which are fed mostly to a humidity sensor 4 via a buffer amplifier 2 and a smaller part to a reference branch via a directional coupler integrated in the buffer amplifier. The frequency of the microwaves is selected so that both the structure and the contamination of the material being measured, which manifest themselves in direct current conductivity, have a negligible influence on the measurement result; in this case 2.45 GHz.
A VCO 5 generates another signal that controls the mixers 6 and 7 and is offset in frequency by the amount of the intermediate frequency compared to the measuring frequency. Starting from the reference signal, a part of the signal generated in the reference branch is
The intermediate frequency signal is used as the input of another phase-locked loop 8, which keeps the intermediate frequency constant.
The intermediate frequency signals generated in the measuring and reference branches are fed to controlled amplifiers 9 and 10 for further processing, whose control voltages are converted into digital signals via the AD converters 11 and 12. These digital signals are a measure of the amplitudes of the measuring and reference signals.
In two further mixers 13 and 14, the output signals of the controlled amplifiers are converted to a further intermediate frequency using an oscillator 15. At this intermediate frequency, the phase difference between the two signals is measured in a phase detector 16. The output voltage of the phase detector is converted into a digital signal in an AD converter 17.
In a temperature sensor 18, the temperature of the material being measured is converted into an analogue signal and in a subsequent AD converter 19 into a digital temperature signal. A digital ohmmeter 20 is used to measure the direct current conductivity of the material being measured. The digital temperature and conductivity signals are input variables of a control computer 21. The control computer 21 controls the display 22 via a serial interface. The correction of the moisture-equivalent signal is also carried out by evaluating the structure of the respective material being measured using correction signals that are generated by a memory bank 23. Each sector of the memory bank 23 is able to generate the signals that correspond to the material structure of one of the grain fractions to be measured. The switching causes an external control signal that is generated by the higher-level system control.
The corrected moisture measurement value is output on the display 22 or on an interface integrated in the control computer 21.
