Änderungen de» Heil-SignaleThe disadvantage of the known designs, however, is that they are not very flexible with regard to changes in the size of the light and dark signals. Changes in the » healing signals
Änderungen des Dunkel-Signals ergeben sich , , 25 u.a. durch eingestreutes Fremdlicht, durch Licht «ler Lichtquelle, das über einen Umweg zum Empfänger reflektiert wird, oder durch mangelnde Absorption des unterbrechenden Objektes (z,B Beschädigung des absorbierenden Bereiches einer Hell/Dunkel-Skala). tj are caused, among other things, by the ageing of the light source and the light-sensitive receiver, by a reduced optical permeability (contamination), for example, of protective screens in the beam path or by misalignment of the beam path. Changes in the dark signal are caused, , 25, by scattered extraneous light, by light from the light source that is reflected via a detour to the receiver, or by insufficient absorption of the interrupting object (e.g. damage to the absorbing area of a light/dark scale).

The object of the invention is therefore to provide a comparator circuit of the type mentioned at the beginning, which automatically adapts to changes in the ambient conditions and to ageing of components.

According to the invention, this is achieved in that the brightness of the light source or the gain factor of the light-sensitive receiver or of the downstream amplifier can be changed by gradually preventing a resistor, in that further comparators are present which compare the output signal of the light-sensitive receiver or of the downstream amplifier with two further predetermined threshold values, whereby one further threshold value is above and the other threshold value is below the threshold value for the comparator for light/dark detection, in that these two further comparators cause a counter to count up or down when the lower threshold value is undershot and the upper threshold value is exceeded, and in that the status of the counter determines the size of the gain-determining resistor.
A digital control loop with integrating behavior is set up that keeps the output signal of the light-sensitive receiver or the downstream amplifier within a certain range. If the output signal exceeds the upper threshold, for example, the gain is reduced one level at a time until the output signal is below the upper threshold.

In the block diagram of Fig. 1, a light source 1 can be seen, for example a light-emitting diode, whose radiation passes through a scale 3 with absorbing areas 4 and with light-permeable areas 5 and then hits a light-sensitive receiver 2. The output signal of the light-sensitive receiver 2 is amplified by an amplifier 6 and then fed to three comparators. The comparator 12 is used for the actual light/dark detection, its output signal is fed to the other circuit parts via line 16. If the normal bright level is, for example, 8 V and the normal dark level is 2 V, the threshold of the comparator 12 is set to approximately 4 V. In this numerical example, the comparator 10 has a threshold of 10 V, while the comparator 11 has a threshold of 1.5 V. In normal operation, the threshold of 10 V of comparator 10 is never exceeded and the threshold of 1.5 V of comparator is never undercut. This means that counter 14 receives no signal at its input 17 for counting down or at its input 18 for counting up - the counter reading therefore remains unchanged. The counter reading of counter 14 now determines which of the switches 8 are closed and which of the resistors 7 form the gain-determining voltage divider made up of resistors 7 and 9.
However, if the Heil signal rises above 10 V, the comparator 10 responds and causes the counter 14 to count down at the frequency of the clock generator 13, for example 1 Hz. This closes other switches 8 and switches smaller resistors 7 into the voltage divider that determines the gain, so that the gain is reduced by one step. In general, just one step is enough to fall below the comparator threshold of 10 V at comparator 10. The counter 14 then stops again and remains at its new count.
SW 9003SW9003
In the opposite case, that the output signal becomes too small, i.e. the dark level drops below 1.5 V, |

There is more freedom in selecting the individual voltage levels in a circuit according to Fig. 3, where the binary counter 31 is followed by a decoder 32 which converts the counter reading into an output signal at one of its eight outputs 33. Each of these outputs controls a switch (not shown) which then activates an associated resistor (also not shown). In this design, the individual resistance levels (and thus the gain levels) can be selected independently of one another and, for example, a linear step or a logarithmic or exponential step can be selected, or relatively narrow steps can be provided in the vicinity of the normal operating point and larger steps for very small and very large counter readings.
EineIn Fig. 4, a complete circuit is shown in a further embodiment. A light-emitting diode 41 is supplied with a current from a voltage source 43 via a series resistor 40. The light from the light-emitting diode 41 falls on a photodiode 42, whose working resistance is formed by one of the resistors 44. The selection of the working resistances is carried out by the integrated circuit 43, which connects the input 45 to one of the outputs 46 depending on the logic signal at the inputs 47. The integrated circuit 43 therefore contains the individual switches for connecting the input 45 to one of the outputs and the decoding of the signal from the inputs 47. A

The signals for the inputs 47 come from the outputs 49 of the counter 48 and represent the binary coded counter reading of the counter 48. The counter 48 receives its clock pulses from a clock generator 57. The counter is enabled at input 50, the decision whether to increase or decrease
20This integrated counter is available from Fairchild, for example, under the type designation CD4029. The inputs 50 and 51 are controlled as shown by the comparators 53 and 54, which monitor the output signal of the photodiode 42. The comparator 55 outputs the light/dark signal via the output 56. All three comparators receive their comparison voltage from a single voltage divider 52, which is connected to the same supply voltage 43 as the photodiode 42. This partially compensates for the influence of changes in the supply voltage. 20
