For electron tubes in which the electron flow is in the form of a
Beam passes through the electrodes, it is possible to achieve a
strong electron current often necessary to use a flat cathode, which
for example, has the shape of a cylindrical tin can and on its end face
is covered with emissions. These cathodes, which in themselves deliver high currents
can, but must, during production and often also during activation
.the tube must be handled with care, as the emissive oxide on the flat
Cathode surface often does not adhere firmly, but at least there is always the risk of
There is flaking of oxide particles. This danger does not only exist with Braunschen
Tubes, but also with cathode ray tubes for generating ibzw. Reinforcement
electric waves in the centimeter range. With these tubes, not just one is proportionate
high load, the cathode necessary, but it can be operated in braking field circuit
Tubes also very easy to damage the cathode as a result of back heating
the electrons returning to the cathode surface at high speed
come. This phenomenon can often be found in the so-called
Observe reflection klystrons in which the electron beam passes through

The speed of the control system connected to the cavity resonator is modulated,
so that it is reflected on a focal electrode and fed back into the control system
where it gets its high frequency energy when it passes through the
System transfers to the oscillating circuit. The cathode of such a tube may become
very highly stressed, especially if not on the respective operating state
the tube taken into consideration and the heating of the cathode is regulated accordingly.
The invention now provides a simple means of avoiding these disadvantages
and relates to a construction of a flat cathode which is not only capable of
to deliver a high current, but also is not exposed to the risk of being through
the processes described lose their emissivity prematurely. According to the invention
- one flat side of the cathode with an oxide or an alloy of an alkaline earth metal
covered and this covering is made up of a series of parallel wires or strips,
preferably made of a refractory metal, such as tungsten or molybdenum, covered.
A cathode according to the invention is shown in the drawing.

Metal strips 6 are placed, which are preferably made of a high-melting metal,

bent over and welded to the cathode body by means of a ring 7 pushed over it.
In: the illustrated embodiments .the edges of the bands are .tight
to each other (Fig. 2), so that there are only extremely narrow joints between them.
Even the finest joints are sufficient to create a fine barium film when the cathode is heated
.to let the surface of the metal strips step over their whole
Surface covered. The bands can also be made using parallel wires or a wire mesh
or braided band to be replaced. This arrangement has the advantage that even in the event of an impact
of ions or electrons, through which the highly emissive metal film is broken down
this metal is repeatedly supplied to the cathode surface. the
In terms of the drum effects mentioned, cathodes are largely due to charge carriers
insensitive and always ready for activation. For cathode ray tubes,
in particular centimeter wave tubes operating with electron beams, this is
Property of paramount importance; such cathodes can be very high for a long time
stress and achieve an extremely long service life.
