Description
Process for the continuous casting of strands of any length Continuous casting of blocks made of light metals or other metallic materials a vertical casting mold that is open at the top and bottom is generally used, into which the liquid metal is poured in at the top and the completely or partially solidified at the bottom Cast block is led out.
As for further processing by pressing, forging or rolling Blocks of a certain length are required when continuously casting in the Usually proceed in such a way that the cast material is fed to the mold in an uninterrupted flow and from the strand exiting at a constant speed z. B. by means of a saw arranged below the mold cut off blocks of the desired length will. This way of working has the disadvantage that the inevitable by sawing Vibrations are transmitted via the strand to the mold and lead to operational disruptions as well as increased mold wear and fatigue fractures give rise to.
When using modern continuous casting processes in which the a short chilled mold exiting strand directly with water or a is brought into contact with other coolants, there is also the difficulty that the saw and its drive are exposed to the action of the coolant, leading to can lead to further malfunctions and in particular to corrosion. It Attempts have also been made to reduce the coolant by sealing the strand above catch the saw; but so far this has only succeeded imperfectly and also led too cumbersome and expensive facilities.
To avoid sawing, it has also been suggested after reaching a certain block length a washer or a ring made of a suitable material to be placed in the mold during casting. These links should be do not connect to the cast block and therefore a subdivision of the strand into individual ones Allow blocks of the desired length without machining. This is a disadvantage in this way of working is, however, that these intermediate links, if they are in particular: metallic Materials exist, warp or crack as a result of the thermal stresses that occur will. In the first case, the intermediate member can become jammed in the mold result, which can lead to @ damage to the mold wall; in the latter case the casting material can penetrate into the resulting cracks, causing a subsequent Loosening the cast block from the intermediate links is made difficult.
Experiments have shown, surprisingly, that the difficulties mentioned can then be eliminated when the desired strand length is reached Inflow of the cast material into the mold is interrupted until the strand is completely solidified, and then casting is resumed in the usual manner is so that the upper part of the previously cast strand when pouring the following Strand serves as the lower end of the @ casting mold.
However, it can be useful to start casting another strand, not to wait until the previous one has completely solidified or cooled down. at some alloys it has z. B. proven to be beneficial with the pouring of the new Strand to begin as long as the previous one is warm. not yet complete to the coolant. In order to shorten the pouring break as much as possible, you can use the casting of the new block may also be started before the previous block is completely solidified. The casting process can often do this be continued if only the surface of the previously cast strand solidifies is. The subsequent separation of such cast blocks is particularly important then no trouble when it comes to metals or metal alloys that in the liquid state form a thick oxide skin on their surface.
This process can and can be repeated as often as desired perform in such a way that they emerge from the mold downwards in continuous operation Strands without the use of additional facilities, only under the effect of their Dead weight, can be detached from each other. They can come from the casting plant be continued by means of a suitable conveyor device.
Figs. I and 2 illustrate an embodiment of the invention in longitudinal section. The casting material flows through the mold in a known manner Launder - to. The mold is designed as a short, water-cooled ring. That Coolant is supplied to the cooling jacket through an opening 3 and passes through nozzles q. from the mold in such a way that it is in direct contact with the surface of the block 5 leaving the mold comes. For the start of pouring will be how Shown in Fig. i, a bottom piece 6 is used, the diameter of which corresponds to the one of the block to be cast and that something from below: protrudes into the mold. As soon as the liquid metal constantly flowing into the mold is close to the upper one The edge of the mold has risen, the bottom piece is driven by the two Rollers 8 and 9 moved downwards. The lowering speed is to be selected so that. the height of the metal mirror. is kept constant in the mold. Has the lower one At the edge of the cast block 5, the rollers 8 and 9 are exceeded, as shown in Fig. 2 can be seen, the bottom piece 6 from the cast block @ and meets in his case on one Slide io, which feeds the floor piece to the roller table 1i for further conveyance. Has the ingot 5 reaches the desired length, the further supply becomes liquid Metal interrupted to the mold and the lowering of the ingot in the position shown in Fig.2 The position shown is set by stopping the rollers 8 and 9. After this the surface of the ingot is solidified, the supply of the liquid metal to the mold again and as soon as the metal level is close to the upper edge of the mold has risen, with the lowering of the ingot 5 by restarting of roles 8 and 9 continued. In this way, the ingot 7 arises from which the ingot 5 loosens after the latter has left the rollers 8 and 9. Its path over chute io and roller table ii is the same as that of the Bodenstücks 6. This game can now be repeated as often as you like. It is by the way it is not necessary to shut down the rollers 8 and 9 completely during the pause in pouring. You can with suitable coordination of lowering speed, mold height and casting pause as well operated with a temporarily reduced or even constant speed of rotation will.
When using this process, the ingots can be cut without sawing off the head or foot ends of the further processing by forging, pressing or rolling are fed.
