Description
Method and machine for pressing components made up of individual sections Book Blocks The invention relates to bookbinding. When the parts of a book have been stapled and stacked ready for binding is the thickness of the book block larger than is desired in the general, mean @ in the bound book, and above out on the larger than on the leading edge. Around the swelling on the edge of the back and reducing the overall thickness of the book block, it becomes common squeezed or pressed together before binding. The pressing is usually done in a press with the head continuously moved vertically back and forth, under the book blocks are brought by hand. If the pressing is to be effective, this must remove the air between the leaves. It is towards it make sure that no air is trapped between the leaves during pressing is. because such air leads to crumpling or even tearing of the leaves. The worker achieves this by first inserting the book block with four spine edges first introduces the press so that about half the book block is pressed and then. at the next push of the press, turn the book block so that the other half is pressed. If necessary, he then closes the entire book block final blow to the press. Because the book block starts at the beginning the back edge is thicker than the front edge occurs when the pressure is applied in the leaves there is an effort to slide sideways past each other. This endeavor must be counteracted by the worker, by pulling the front edge of the book block firmly gripped between the fingers. It is difficult and tiring work especially when processing high-gloss paper. The work is also dangerous and any carelessness can result in injury to the workers' fingers.
It is common for two workers on opposite sides of one Machine work, and. this results in an approximate output of the press eight book blocks per minute.
Sometimes a press with semi-automatic loading is used. With this: machine, a short conveyor belt is provided, the upper run of which is precise running over the bed of the press. The conveyor belt is loaded by hand and. by leaps and bounds driven in synchronism with the reciprocation of the press to make the book blocks under the head of the press. and push it to an acceptance point, when they have been pressed, d. H. they are in a single stroke of the press pressed. In order to effect the pressing without damaging the book sections, the Workers break each book block before inserting it into the press, d. H. at a Bend sharply along the line that runs across the book from the spine to the front edge, work which requires a considerable amount of skill on the part of the worker.
The machine according to the invention is designed to perform the work required for pressing and compressing the book blocks Reduces the minimum and eliminates the need for trained labor entirely.
It contains an intermittently driven conveyor belt on which the book blocks standing on the edge to two back-to-back pressing points and through them be conveyed through, with a pair of jaws so arranged at each pressing point is that it presses the books standing on the conveyor belt to the side between them. The jaws of the first press point are designed so that they the book block Press less near the front edge than near the back, and the The jaws of the second press point are designed so that they are close to the Press the back less than near the front edge.
The clamping jaws are advantageously designed so that at each pressing point the weaker pressure immediately before and during the exercise of the stronger resp. Press pressure occurs.
It is essential that the book blocks are at precisely regulated intervals be conveyed through the machine. If the distances with which the book blocks are transported through the machine, even if they are only 1/1 mm too long, the when passing through, for example, iooo book blocks (significantly less than the performance per hour) accumulated displacement would be 25 a, and the book blocks would therefore do not arrive exactly at the press point.
The press machine shown in the drawing contains a conveyor belt io, which is driven periodically in order to press the To convey book blocks to and through the press station. The conveyor belt has a Chain 16 which runs around a pair of sprockets 18, 19 at each end of the machine. At The chain links are attached to plates 2o, which form the support surface for the book blocks form. The conveyor belt is provided at intervals with drivers 22, which as Schieh, he serve or wear such as will be specifically described later. The conveyor belt is supported by a plate 24 between the sprockets 18, 19.

It can be seen that the ejector is pivoted in unison with and through the rear jaw 102. When it is pushed forward, its lowermost end 117 lies at the unloading point below the level of the rear guide rail 107 ", a 1 " and the book block P. The book block is thereby tilted and slides open, as P 'in FIG. 8 shows a slide 118, whereby the front guide rail 1o8, as shown at 108 'in Fig. 8. When the jaw moves back, the ejector returns to its starting position with the aid of a spring r 19, while the front rail 1o8 by its own weight falls back into its original position.
Between the two pressing points there are two \\% iinde 122,12-1, the front of which, '124, is solid. The rear wall 122 is towards and towards the front Wall corresponding to the thickness of the book block by means similar to that of the Adjustment of the rear wall provided at the loading point 4o is adjustable. In the drawing, the same reference symbols are used to designate the actuating means.
It is very important that the book blocks go through the conveyor belt in stages of exactly the right size. This includes the certainty that the. Book blocks on your hörderban (1 can not slide, and also that the conveyor belt takes steps of just the right size. 1); e formed by the stops 22- or sliders carried by these prevent sliding onto your conveyor belt.
Fig. 1, 3 und 12). Fig. i). To ensure that the conveyor belt makes movements of the correct size, an adjustment device 126 is provided (:. Figs. 1, 3 and 12). This device consists of a piece of chain 128 which exactly resembles the conveyor chain 16 and therefore fits onto the teeth of the sprocket 18. The chain 128 is held by a sector 130 which is mounted pivotably about a pin 132 on an arm 134. The arm 134 is freely pivotable about a fixed bolt 136 and consists of one piece with an arm 138. The sector 130 is connected to a lug 144 on the arm 138 by a bracket 14 and a set screw 142. A connecting rod 146 is articulated to the arm 138 and slides with a roller 148 at its outermost end on a cam 50 of the shaft 38 (see FIG. 1). The connecting rod 146 is on a part 152 of the machine frame; " .bearing, and the roller 148 is pressed by a spring 154 against the cam-en 15o.
When sprocket i8 is driven, roller 148 is thickest Part of the cam i .5o and the chain 128 disengages from the sprocket held as shown in Fig. 12 with dash-dotted lines. When the movement the connecting rod 27 is reversed at the end of a feed and that The sprocket is disconnected from the drive, the cam i 5o is in one position (See Fig. i), in which the roller 148 rests against its narrowest part, and the chain As shown in FIGS. 1 and 12, 128 is engaged with the sprocket. The position of the chain is precisely defined and, accordingly, the position of the sprocket. The length of the effective preschool of the l # örderl> atides is fixed to this length, and this creates a safeguard against every slight inaccuracy in switching on the l, öi-ilerllandantrieifs in a summation of errors which would gradually lead to the book blocks being different than iniierhall> d @ i- jaws of the presses to a standstill koinni.z2n.
Of course, a tooth sector could also be used instead of the chain 128 will.
Wie in den Fig. 2 und 3 dargestellt, sind auf den Backen 8o, 102 Zeiger vorgesehen, die mit den Skalen 56 zusammenwirken.\ 'Vie already described is the mutual spacing of the guide plates at ('egg loading point and between the two press st.llen according to the thickness of the book blocks to be pressed adjustable. The distance between the jaws at the pressing points must be similarly adjustable. For this purpose, the knee joint members 93 (Fig. 2 and 4), which connect the two different jaws with their connecting rods 94, formed from two parts 156, 157 with opposing threads and a corresponding one Turnbuckle 158 connected. Adjustment of the length of the links 93 does not cause any difference in the llub length of the lacquers connected to them, but changes the initial and end spacing of the lacquers of each pair. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, are On the jaws 8o, 102 pointers are provided, which interact with the scales 56.
To prevent relative movement of the book blocks in relation to each other The participants 22 can carry slides 16o on the conveyor belt. one of which is in Fig. 9, io and i i is particularly shown. These slides adjust accordingly because the distance between the guide plates and the press jaws in width automatically.
Where very thin book blocks are pressed. the drivers 22 can serve as squinters themselves; their width and position on the plates io of the conveyor belt is adapted to the smallest possible distance between the guide walls or the jaws. For thicker book blocks, the Schielfer iöo are attached to the drivers. Each squint consists of a bearing plate 162 with a 164 into which a dovetail spring 166 of the driver 22 can be inserted. Two slide plates 168, 169 are mounted on pivot pins 170 on plate 162. The slide plates are pressed outward by springs 172.
